To be looking forward to Autumn now?

I feel like we’ve had our summer now, and a pretty good one at that.

The weather has turned here today, it’s 16 degrees, 40mph winds and pissing it down. I’m walking the dog but not in my winter coat or waterproof trousers as I’d be too hot so it’s not altogether pleasurable.

I was shopping yesterday abc picked up some joy chocolate and marshmallows, something I haven’t bought/ had since March.

We’ve just had 2 log burners installed and I’m really looking forward to being able to curl up in front of those.

It’s also the first autumn in our new house/ location as we moved in the spring and I’m looking forward to countryside walks when the leaves are falling etc. (We lived rurally before but there were no public footpaths so you weren’t allowed to walk on any of the land whereas now we can walk for miles snd miles on public footpaths and not see a soul)

I’m looking forward to Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas. After Christmas I’m done and will be longing for Spring!

Obviously all of the the above will probably be different this year due to COVID, but I’m still looking forward to it.

I said all this to my friend yesterday who looked at me like I was mad and said ‘err, no way, I’m still enjoying summer.’

Yep I am shifting into autumn mode this week due to the change in the weather and the fact that the schools go back next week. Love the autumn. Am thinking of decorating the house a bit, some nice lights to brighten up the darker evenings and pine cones etc. Also going to stock up on hot chocolate and nice bath stuff.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 25/08/2020 10:50

Kids are back at school next week so there is likely to be a brief revival of summer before autumn kicks in properly. I'm not keen on winter, cold, wet, dark, muddy.

CeibaTree · 25/08/2020 11:23

I love autumn, it is hands down my favourite season. Autumn clothes look more flattering on me, I love going for blustery walks and coming in to the warmth; and there is just something a bit magical in the air and the sense of new beginnings with the start of the academic year. The period between Halloween and Christmas is the best part of the year to me :)

ilikebooksandplants · 25/08/2020 11:23

There’s still about a month of summer before Autumn actually begins, so for that you are being unreasonable.

This is something that really depresses me about social media in general; a couple of days ago lots of people were hash tagging things about autumn on my Instagram feed - why are people so desperate to move on to the next season? I don’t understand it. One of the absolute little joys in life is appreciating the change in seasons over time, surely? Late summer is beautiful! Just enjoy it without dashing on to the next thing.

I feel the same way about people who put their Christmas trees up in November and take them down on Boxing Day. Utterly joyless.

GlottalStrop · 25/08/2020 11:30

I was just about to say that too, Autumn is a way off yet. Much as I love it, it's not here yet. Let's enjoy the end of Summer.

Hipflask08 · 25/08/2020 11:32

I do enjoy summer, especially late summer, in fact I enjoy late summer more than early summer. I like the sunsets and stubble fields and the kids about are back at school so you can go out and do things mid week without it being rammed.

But as I said in my OP, are summer started pretty early this year (basically the end of March when lockdown was announced) we had 20 something degrees throughout late March / April and May. We had an okay June/ July with some hot weather and then we’ve had a hot August.

I do feel like we’ve had a decent summer and also that we’ve been stuck in Summer for ages. I think mentally, especially with the weather like it is today, I’m now just ready for something different. I want to be able to justify putting warm clothes on on days like today. It feels autumnal today to me. I don’t want to not enjoy the seasons/ wish time away, I enjoy all seasons. However the weather here today pretty much resembles winter and looking ahead to the forecast for the next couple of weeks it all looks to be the same as today so I’m kinda thinking, well let’s just skip the shit and get on with ‘proper’ autumn!

God nothing I type is making sense today.

I follow the meteorological calendar when it comes to the seasons so Autumn starts a week today for me :)

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 25/08/2020 11:37

YABVU. People have this idealistic view of autumn which really doesn't live up to the reality. Last autumn it pissed with rain every day from October to lockdown. Grey skies, windy - it was vile. Not the chilly, crunching on leaves that autumn lovers would have you believe.

Give me a decent summer any day. The weather out there is particularly depressing at the moment.

Grapesoda7 · 25/08/2020 11:42

I love Autumn and was looking up sausage casserole recipes yesterday in preparation!

zingally · 25/08/2020 11:45

I like autumn as well. :) September/October are my favourite months. Probably helped by having my birthday at the end of September. :) Plus the weather very often has a last hurrah of summer around my birthday, so I often get lucky with the weather!

I also like the start of a new term. I'm a school teacher, so always associate September/October with fresh starts/new beginnings.

CatSmith · 25/08/2020 11:46

I have been looking forward to evenings with the lamps on, the curtains closed, scented candles, my favourite Sherpa blanket to cosy up with and when it gets seriously winter putting my brushed cotton duvet sets on the bed!
Autumn and winter are made for closing down.

OnceUponATimeInHollywood · 25/08/2020 11:48

You are my type of person! I love all that. 😁

mintich · 25/08/2020 11:48

Me too, I really want it to cool down now. I love autumn and winter so can't wait!

ImaSababa · 25/08/2020 11:50

Definitely. I love this time of year! Already feeling cosy.

recklessruby · 25/08/2020 11:54

I love Autumn and winter too. I have a winter birthday so think I m just made this way.
Also work in a school so every September is a fresh start, new classes, lovely fresh painted classrooms and varnished floors (doesn't stay like it very long).

HungryForSnacks · 25/08/2020 12:00

When it was 35 degrees I would have agreed with you. Now it's windy, rainy and miserable and I want summer back 🤣

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/08/2020 12:02

I am, actually. Silly as it sounds it's because I'll have the routine of the school run back & hopefully happier dc because of it. For the first time in 10.5 years I'll also have 2.5 days a week to myself as dc5(3) is starting nursery.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 25/08/2020 12:05

I also work in a school which I think helps. September always feels fresh and new :)

My main hobby is cross stitch and there is nothing better than snuggling under the blanket with the warm glow of a lamp and an audio book to do my stitching.

JustCallMeGriffin · 25/08/2020 12:09

The only thing I don't like about the colder months is Christmas, otherwise I'd be perpetually happy in an autumnal/winter state.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 25/08/2020 12:14

I am dreading it. This Autumn and Winter are likely to be rocked by mass unemployment and shit weather is just going to make for an increasingly depressing atmosphere.

I want endless Summer.

NotEvenTheKing · 25/08/2020 12:17

I'm always looking forward to autumn. It's my favourite season. After the heat this spring and summer and I'm very much looking forward to jumpers and fluffy socks.

AriettyHomily · 25/08/2020 12:17

If we are gojng to end up locked down again I'd rather it was summer. Crisp autumn days are lovely but grey shitty wet autumn days are not.

Deelish75 · 25/08/2020 12:33

I enjoy summer, especially the lazy days in the back garden in the paddling pool, but I love early autumn. September and October are my favourite months, watching the colours change and the smells.

We usually go on holiday the last two weeks of the summer holidays (not done this year) then it's home and back to school. I always cut my hair in September having grown it in the spring so I can tie it up over the heat of summer - Sept always feels like a restart to me.

For Halloween people go all out for it here, everyone goes to town decorating the house, it's great for trick or treating but not sure what it will be like this year. I enjoy bonfire night, usually go to an organised display but hate hearing people letting off random fireworks in the weeks before and after. (The display has already been cancelled)

Leaannb · 25/08/2020 12:39

Its too damn hot to thinking about Autumn. We will still have at least 6 weeks with high Temps before even cooling down to Temps that are comparable to your Summer. To put it in perspective its not even 8am here and its 27 degrees outside. I just got out of the pool and to get ready to work
