To be looking forward to Autumn now?

I feel like we’ve had our summer now, and a pretty good one at that.

The weather has turned here today, it’s 16 degrees, 40mph winds and pissing it down. I’m walking the dog but not in my winter coat or waterproof trousers as I’d be too hot so it’s not altogether pleasurable.

I was shopping yesterday abc picked up some joy chocolate and marshmallows, something I haven’t bought/ had since March.

We’ve just had 2 log burners installed and I’m really looking forward to being able to curl up in front of those.

It’s also the first autumn in our new house/ location as we moved in the spring and I’m looking forward to countryside walks when the leaves are falling etc. (We lived rurally before but there were no public footpaths so you weren’t allowed to walk on any of the land whereas now we can walk for miles snd miles on public footpaths and not see a soul)

I’m looking forward to Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas. After Christmas I’m done and will be longing for Spring!

Obviously all of the the above will probably be different this year due to COVID, but I’m still looking forward to it.

I said all this to my friend yesterday who looked at me like I was mad and said ‘err, no way, I’m still enjoying summer.’

To carry on with my theme, the equinox are the middle of the season they are in, so mid September is the middle of Autumn (Celtic year), mid June is midsummer etc, not the start date of the season. Autumn equinox is when the amount of daylight is equal to darkness.

I feel as though I've had no summer, or spring with the covid pandemic. Yes, walks locally but all the lovely events cancelled, no summer fairs, very few places to go, even shopping is a pain. No holidays in the UK by the sea, as I normally do, no visits to family in Norfolk. It's been shit and now autumn with all the wind and rain to look forward to, and winter on the horizon.

I think it's more DS has been in and out of hospital since beginning of June, and is still not well, is my real reason thinking this has been the summer from Hell. Thinks would probably have been different if not for this

I hope your son improves soon @tornadoalley. We had this when DD was a baby. The local children's hospital was our second home for three years.

The area we live in is shaded the second dark blue from the top for rainfall. I would like to live in a yellow or turquoise area.

I'm looking forward to autumn. But I'm going on a UK holiday next week, so the sunny weather just needs to hold on for a tiny bit longer. Apparently it's going to be 21/22 on the south coast and I want to be able to eat ice cream in the sunshine.

As soon as I get back, I promise, autumn can start. I'll get my jumpers ready and put pumpkin spice in everything.

tornadoalley · 27/08/2020 09:53

@Ginfordinner. Thank you.

I'm in Cornwall and September and October here is truely magical in a way that I'd never realised all the years I lived in London. There is something about the light here in Cornwall in autumn that I can't get enough of. Love it. Oh and getting out the Balckberry and Bay perfume too.

I'm visiting Cornwall in September! Can't wait - its such a beautiful part of the world, I'm really looking forward to some beautiful coastline walks.

I'm in a turquoise area so maybe that explains why I like Autumn :)

Ginfordinner · 27/08/2020 10:10

I'm not very fond of cinnamon, so I have no desire for pumpkin spiced drinks. And the cinnamon scented candles, diffusers and pot pourri (do people still get thtat these days?) just smell revolting to me.

Go to Porthcurno at dawn @Cam2020

Turn your life-long rules around. Plan it the day before. Set your alarm so that you drive into the car park there for 4.45 am. That is after first light, but in time for dawn. Sunsets don't work there, only sunrises.

Walk down between the shrubs, feel that soft sand like sifted-flour, gently kiss your feet. Emerge onto that small, but perfect beach, sheltered by pillars of rock, untouched, natural and embracing. Walk gently down to the waves. Know that this beach is yours, just yours, in this moment. That beach, that feeling is unique.

Listen to the waves. That sound at that moment, that back-whoosh is yours.

Just do these things. Break some rules.

Cam2020 · 27/08/2020 22:17

@Manolin that sounds beautiful.

Not sure where you are in the UK, but it is looking like there may be a last hurrah of nice weather next week before Autumn sets in. According to weather reports, temperatures of 30 degrees in the South. Maybe don't light those Autumn candles just yet!
