To be looking forward to Autumn now?

I feel like we’ve had our summer now, and a pretty good one at that.

The weather has turned here today, it’s 16 degrees, 40mph winds and pissing it down. I’m walking the dog but not in my winter coat or waterproof trousers as I’d be too hot so it’s not altogether pleasurable.

I was shopping yesterday abc picked up some joy chocolate and marshmallows, something I haven’t bought/ had since March.

We’ve just had 2 log burners installed and I’m really looking forward to being able to curl up in front of those.

It’s also the first autumn in our new house/ location as we moved in the spring and I’m looking forward to countryside walks when the leaves are falling etc. (We lived rurally before but there were no public footpaths so you weren’t allowed to walk on any of the land whereas now we can walk for miles snd miles on public footpaths and not see a soul)

I’m looking forward to Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas. After Christmas I’m done and will be longing for Spring!

Obviously all of the the above will probably be different this year due to COVID, but I’m still looking forward to it.

I said all this to my friend yesterday who looked at me like I was mad and said ‘err, no way, I’m still enjoying summer.’

It’s definitely regional. We’re in Lancashire and for a change, we’ve had a pretty nice spring and summer. It definitely feels autumnal now though.

I think you’d be surprised by just how much rain we get up here. And even if it’s not raining it’s damp all of the time. Muddy, wet and cold sums up autumn in the north.

I also suffer from SAD and vitamin D, a strong multivitamin and St. John’s wart are very much needed. I definitely need to get a SAD lamp too, especially if I’m stuck working from home much longer.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 26/08/2020 10:23

I find i enjoy being outside more in the autumn as I don't cope well with direct sunlight in the summer. In the autumn I can put on warm clothes and walk for miles.

Grapesoda7 · 26/08/2020 10:28

Me and my husband are very divided on the seasons.

He has olive skin, loves the sun and heat, has a vitamin D deficiency and suffers from SAD in the winter. He could happily move to a hot climate and skip the seasons altogether.

I am very pale, hate being too hot, have hay-fever and polymorphic light eruptions so summer is not my friend.

I do like Spring though (but not as much as reading my book under my cosy throw with a cup of tea in Autumn).

@userxx

What is it with MN and hot chocolate in every autumn/winter thread?

Don't forget the overuse of the word cosy.

Grin Totally agree

Like LadyCatStark we get a lot of rain.
@Hipflask08 it really did pour with rain every day last October, and nearly every day all autumn and winter. Which is why we had floods in South Yorkshire.

I don't think people who live in dryer parts of the country understand just how miserable it is to be out in thst kind of rain all the time, especially if you wear glasses like me.

userxx · 26/08/2020 13:13

By the end of October my feet were looking webbed - it was a miserable month in Manchester too. I'd get in from work with the bottom of my trousers sopping wet and leak water all over the laminate floor.

I can see me moving abroad at some point.

MondeoFan · 26/08/2020 13:16

Yes been stocking up on autumn candles and new bedding. Got a new tv, new lounge blinds and a lovely heart made from wool with some little lights around it.
I'm already imaging and cosy autumnal evening with new blinds closed, pumpkin candles lit etc

Ginfordinner · 26/08/2020 13:23

"Cosy"

Bingo!

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/08/2020 13:27

I will provided the local weather is half-decent. Will be nice to take my DD on walks around the local countryside, or just for go for an early morning stroll in my big parka.

SantaClaritaDiet · 26/08/2020 13:30

Cold, damp, short days and dark evenings

We are going towards the most depressing time of the year without having had proper holiday abroad and unlikely to be able to have a real holiday and fly any time soon.

I hate it and want to cry, cannot wait for next summer.

No, you don't "melt" in the rain Hmm but running in it is shit. Kids are not allowed to take bags with them to school now, so I don't know HOW they will make it to school if they can't wear wellies and their normal waterproof - easy solution, we'll have to drive them but I hate that lazy option.

Autumn is shit in this country, bills will rock up as we have to put up the heating soon. Nothing to look forward to until I book my holiday!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/08/2020 13:37

I like all the seasons to be honest. Proper ‘seasons’ is one of the best things about living in Britain. I have spent years living in various Asian and Middle Eastern countries where there is little variation in the weather year round. And ultra hot and sunny every day gets boring quicker than you would think Grin

Absolutely. I've had three summer holidays cancelled this year, have been working almost every day of the almost non existent summer and feel even more deeply resentful of autumn and the forthcoming winter than usual.
Thisismytimetoshine · 26/08/2020 14:17

I love when the Autumn threads start 😄.

I hate summer with a vengeance; just talking about the colours, crisp frosty mornings (although irritatingly these seem to be becoming a thing of the past), food, clothes etc, makes me feel I can actually breathe again.
I spend most of summer feeling as though I've got a plastic bag over my head 🤷🏻‍♀️
Bring it on! 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

I’d love to know what the weather is like at the moment for the people that are moaning about autumn coming. Seriously, it’s so shit here. Cold, rainy, grey and miserable. I’ve looked at the weather for the next 10 days and it’s all the same, no more than 17 degrees and rain, rain and grey. That’s NOT summer. There is something REALLY depressing about a cold, grey, rainy summer’s day, even more so than a rainy winters day. At least in winter you’re prepared for it clothes wise and expect it. I’ve got 2 weeks of cold, wet weather to look forward to in ‘summer.’ Which is why I’m saying I’d rather just push on with autumn and be done with it. This in between meh is just...meh.

I don’t mind if we get some sunnier/ hotter days back by mid Sept for a couple of weeks, but if it’s going to carry on kim this then roll on October!

I am still unsure if I should gamble on a relatively open Europe and book an October (and Christmas) holiday to avoid the miserable autumn of this country.

As we can't get fined if the kids miss school due to quarantine, (and even if we were), I am more and more tempted. Or there's 8 months to be stuck here! My mental health wont' survive it!

Hipflask08 · 26/08/2020 14:34

I definitely didn’t and wouldn’t say ‘snuggle’ Envy (not envy) or blankets, or cosy (I don’t think I said cosy?!) but I DID mention hot chocolate and that’s because I only drink it in the winter, sorry Grin

I am South East. The weather is being pretty shit and a bit stormy this week ,but I still managed to dry a load of laundry outside yesterday afternoon and it's sunny today.

Not a lovely summer, but not Autumn just yet either.

SecretWitch · 26/08/2020 14:42

It is cool and crisp where I live. The leaves on the trees are just starting to be tipped with colour. The light is changing to that mellow golden glow. The nights are drawing in. I am happy.

Summer can fuck right off.

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/08/2020 14:47

The more I think about it, the more I am looking forward to autumn. Lots of things to do for free locally, with less pressure to look good.

Ginfordinner · 26/08/2020 16:51

I have just been out for a walk. It is breezy, cloudy with sunny intervals and 17 degrees. IMO perfect autumn weather, but most definitely not ideal summer weather for me.

Can people who live where summers are warmer and drier and where clear, crisp autumn days aren't as rare as hen's teeth give me a rough idea of the area they live, as I would really like to move away from the rain shadow of the Pennines.

I hate the short days and long nights of winter. I need light, lots of it.

Manolin · 26/08/2020 18:34

@Ginfordinner

Firstly, hope your geography is up to speed. Grin

Your quest for light will depend upon whether you are an early or late riser - assuming your active hours are not already governed by the sun. If an early riser, you will get most benefit living on the East Coast. Whitley Bay or Blakeney perhaps. If a late riser, and you love watching sunsets, you will gain by moving to St Ives or Croyde perhaps.

You have to overlay this principle with the fact that light is more 'volatile' the further north you go. The daylight in Shetland has more variation compared to Ventnor, so if you like a regular even light then I suggest moving further south.

If you dislike rain then East is better than West. If you dislike wind then East is better than West. When the heat was supposedly unbearable in the UK some two weeks ago, the most western parts were shrouded in sea fogs and barely reached 19 degrees. It is late August but look at how Cornwall and SW Wales have been wet and windy and cold too. You cannot buck the fact we are a small island taking the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. The further west you go the wetter it is. It is by no coincidence our arable crops are prevalent in the east while diary, which requires rich, lush grassland is prevalent in the west.

I think what you are looking for is a place further south, perhaps West is OK so long as it is sheltered, so you will get the evening sun, but not the driving rain, or cool mists and fog.

I think you would be suited to the Golden Valley / Herefordshire region, perhaps also where it edges into Worcestershire and the edge of the Cotswolds. You will have sun, warmth, and some benefit from the micro climate that extends from the Severn Valley. They grow hops there and also lavender, just to corroborate what I am saying. Wink
