To be looking forward to Autumn now?

I feel like we’ve had our summer now, and a pretty good one at that.

The weather has turned here today, it’s 16 degrees, 40mph winds and pissing it down. I’m walking the dog but not in my winter coat or waterproof trousers as I’d be too hot so it’s not altogether pleasurable.

I was shopping yesterday abc picked up some joy chocolate and marshmallows, something I haven’t bought/ had since March.

We’ve just had 2 log burners installed and I’m really looking forward to being able to curl up in front of those.

It’s also the first autumn in our new house/ location as we moved in the spring and I’m looking forward to countryside walks when the leaves are falling etc. (We lived rurally before but there were no public footpaths so you weren’t allowed to walk on any of the land whereas now we can walk for miles snd miles on public footpaths and not see a soul)

I’m looking forward to Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas. After Christmas I’m done and will be longing for Spring!

Obviously all of the the above will probably be different this year due to COVID, but I’m still looking forward to it.

I said all this to my friend yesterday who looked at me like I was mad and said ‘err, no way, I’m still enjoying summer.’

It's still pretty warm here but I'm thinking about autumn. The blackberries are over, the apples are nearing the end and the trees are changing colour!

I feel that over the last few years the seasons seem to be shifting. We seem to be getting summer weather from May and it's turning autumnal by the end of August.

I'm also 6 months pregnant so would love for it to cool down! My son adores Halloween and there will be a new baby in November. I'm very happy for autumn!

avocadotofu · 25/08/2020 12:58

I'm totally with you. I LOVE autumn and I've switched to autumn mode this week Smile.

GravyTrain123 · 25/08/2020 13:05

Not unreasonable at all! I love autumn! I watched my first Halloween film today 😂

Allgreyeverything · 25/08/2020 13:07

I love autumn but haven’t felt like there’s been any summer where I am. (Yorkshire). We had a few sunny and hot days, but they were all a rarity. Pissing down most days and 16 degrees was the norm. So yes, I am looking forward to autumn, at least it will be justified to burn candles and be cosy by the fireplace. There is something really depressing about cold and rainy summer.

The80sweregreat · 25/08/2020 13:09

I like autumn too , but I can understand why people don't and prefer summer.
Most of my friends hate the cooler weather and think I'm weird for not pegging myself out in the heat !
The only downside is the nights drawing in as it's nice having it light till 9 or 10 pm.
The last hot spell was too much for me though.

MarshaBradyo · 25/08/2020 13:10

I love summer but I’m always ready to move to autumn as it comes around. And love that too.

Frouby · 25/08/2020 13:17

I love autumn, it's my favourite time of year. It has felt very back endish the last week or so with autumny storms and not as much sunshine but still muggy and warm.

I love unseasonably warm days in autumn more than warm days in summer, it feels like a bonus whereas in summer we exoect them. So nice weather in September is much nicer than July, when it all feels a bit meh by then.

I think there is more pressure in summer to be outside making the most of summer, whereas in autumn if you get a full day of warm weather and get out for the day its a bonus.

starlet14 · 25/08/2020 13:35

September will probably be nice but yes I'm looking forward to autumn!

Fairyliz · 25/08/2020 13:35

I like the idea of autumn, all of those walks in the fresh crisp air looking at the trees changing colour.
However the reality tends to be endless grey damp days when it’s cold and I’m worrying about the heating bills.

I am still waiting for the mellow fruitfulness of September, though it is almost here. The languid sunlight, rolling lazily over the dahlias from late afternoon. The musty smell of bitter-sweet fallen plums and damsons. Butterflies floating over the Salvia catching some warmth from the sun. Bees in third gear only, on the nasturtium flowers, drunk and bruised from their summer pursuits of bumbling in and out of petals collecting pollen. The fresh shoots of raspberries promising a second wave of berries which will go on until the first week of December. The onions strung on the wall to dry a little, while watching how the centuries old bricks upon which they hang now take on different hues as the sunlight picks up on all their colours. The swallows starting to gather in rows on overhead wires all facing towards the sun at 6pm, chattering, catching some warmth before turning in under the barn. Like surfers attuned, sitting on dunes watching the waves, knowing the heat is waning to other shores, making plans to head to different climes. All too soon they will be gone. Let's not wish them away.

This was beautifully written. Do you write poetry? Misses point of the thread Blush
NeonPink · 26/08/2020 02:27

Thank you for starting this thread! Yes, I've had enough of all this heat now and I want it to cool down. I do like summer but I LOVE autumn, it's my absolute favourite season.

However, I'm feeling a little sad this year as I know things won't really be the same (Halloween party's, Bonfire Night displays being cancelled and Christmas outings etc) due to the pandemic. I feel like we might sort-of miss out on everything the season usually has to offer. Maybe it might be a chance for us all to have a think about how we can all celebrate events and do traditions a bit differently?

Great thread OP, I'm so excited! :D

ilovesooty · 26/08/2020 04:00

There's hardly been any summer to speak of. And the nights drawing in is just depressing as far as I'm concerned.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 26/08/2020 05:01

I'm in the Southern Hemisphere where it is thankfully heading into spring. And I can't wait! Bring on the beach! I hate winter, even in Australia it sucks!

Tumbleweed101 · 26/08/2020 06:00

I love September/October before the colder, wetter weather and dark nights fully kick in. But yes, the change of season is beginning of September in my mind even if it isn’t technically autumn until around the solstice.

Love autumn with collecting conkers and leaves and cosy evenings. Have enjoyed our long run of lovely weather this year though too.

crankysaurus · 26/08/2020 06:19

I like the autumn but have worked full time through the nice months bar two weeks that have both been dismal. It's less fun when you're stressed, trying to work in a hot room while neighbours are in full noisy party mode (usually till 2am). Feels like I've entirely missed this summer and the relaxation that should come with it.

Manolin · 26/08/2020 06:20

Equinox?

Nillynally · 26/08/2020 06:32

I'm an autumnophile. OMG I just love it 🥰🥰

sanityisamyth · 26/08/2020 06:35

I hate autumn. It makes me very depressed. The colours are pretty but it's a sign of nature dying and shutting down. The weather is crap and the days get shorter. I don't understand what people like about it. Would be happy to live in a permanent spring/summer.

Tumbleweed101 · 26/08/2020 06:46

@Manolin

Equinox?
Yes that too 😮🙈. It’s early...
Nomorewine77 · 26/08/2020 07:08

I'm with you autumn/ early winter is my favourite time of year. Can't wait for it to be cold enough to light the fire!

WhyIsItSoHardToPickAUsername · 26/08/2020 07:17

I love summer but for some reason I always really anticipate the change of season from summer to autumn and winter to spring. It's not that I enjoy autumn or spring more than summer, I just love the turn of those seasons.
When DS and I walked to nursery on Monday morning it felt really autumnal, crisp and dry. It was lovely.
I'm looking forward to Halloween now too, have always loved Halloween. Living in Scotland it's quite a big thing although when my mum was young she said you'd just get given monkey nuts when guising Grin

TheRealHousewife · 26/08/2020 07:34

Do tell me where you’ve moved too ... sounds idyllic 😊. YANBU.

GotOutOfBedOnTheWrongSide · 26/08/2020 07:39

I love something about every season so I am looking forward to autumn/winter but am a little sad that everything will be so different this year. I'm going to try and make the best of it though and find some imaginative ways to entertain my toddler through the colder months whilst trying not to expose us to Covid.

I think this winter will make everyone a little stronger and more resilient than ever!

Stamen196 · 26/08/2020 07:46

In the South East UK,there always seems to be a heatwave in mid September, once schools and universities have gone back. It's like one last hurrah. Has anyone else noticed that? I tend not to accept it's autumn until after that heatwave, but when it comes I love it. 🍁🍂
