To think that there's loads of famous people using MN?

Just that. I've noticed a few threads recently saying they knew someone famous or were a newsreader/in the media and I was thinking is MN just full of famous people having discussions on threads that they couldn't do face to face for fear of bad press.

I have no idea who Jack Monroe is but anyone who sues Katie Hopkins has my vote.

BetsyBigNose · 24/08/2020 01:04

@Tistheseason17

Jack Monroe sued Katie Hopkins and won - and she was classy about it. That's good enough for me.
Which meant KH had to sell her house to pay JM. KH's house was opposite mine (although her place was much grander than ours). This is why I like Jack Monroe.

I'm pretty cynical about the I am famous/in a band/know or work with celebrities type posts. I would assume anyone like that would come on MN to be anonymous, so why call yourself out? It makes more sense (to me) that it is someone making it up. But a lot of MNers go along with it and seem to believe it.

@EinsteinaGogo

As a PP just said, Jo Brand references Mumsnet in her latest book.

She did actually say 'xxxxxxx' is my Mumsnet username but I've forgotten what it was !

From her book: "it makes me sound like a raddled old misanthropist, which is, coincidentally, my Mumsnet user name"

Is that directed at me? If so I really don't give a shit what you believe
ChessieFL · 24/08/2020 07:19

There’s three aspects to this, isn’t there? Firstly there will be famous people who just come on here like any other user, because they want advice/sympathy about their issue with their child/DH or just because they’re bored and to read the latest AIBU bunfight. Then there will be those who are here for research e.g. authors, journalists, people who need to make sure they’re talking about whatever’s currently relevant. Then there will be those (or more likely their PRs) who are just here to see what’s being said about them. I imagine there’s not that many in the first category (not posting anyway, maybe quite a few just reading) but probably many in the latter two categories.

dancinfeet · 24/08/2020 07:26

I'm sure that at least half of the Loose Women are on here - either that or their research team are, as they always seem to be discussing topics that have already been done in AIBU. I noticed this about a year ago, parts of it are like an AIBU deja vu. I'm not a big fan of watching LW btw, but my friend is and often has it on when I am at her house.

Hullo · 24/08/2020 08:13

Same here, I tell ya, same here.

I also feel the same way when people flash their (supposedly) academic credentials online for no reason, like someone else has done (or alluded to) many times on a thread and I had to laugh. I see this more often on MN/online (where it isn't necessary to state).

Once is passable but more than that (if no direct question is being answered or no actual reason for it), it just screams...I don't know, insecure/the need to prove something to oneself or strangers/to feel good about oneself/oblivious/likes talking about oneself so much that achievements (real or made up) really need to be known to feel more credible...I don't know, it just says something to me.

But perhaps it's just me: a bit cynical + I don't see the need unless it's an absolute must (which is rare on online chat forums) but some people do for different reasons. Oh well...

I don't believe any specific thing people say online about who they are/what they do/have done anyway unless there's solid proof. Perhaps because I've never needed to know this to listen to what someone has to say - if it's valid or not, it's valid or not, regardless of who you are/what you've achieved or not.

Like Shania Twain said, "that don't impress me much".

Never been starstruck either and see celebs as regular people, not more or less important. Some will surely be posting here just like every other regular person. This place can be very entertaining, something to pass the time with. It's not always about figuring out what's been said about them. What's the point of making yourself known? What's there to be gained, except to perhaps stir a little drama/cause a bit of fanfare for personal entertainment...and well, fans' enjoyment? I suppose that's a valid reason, really.

Quoted this in my above post but seems it disappeared.
ImaWomAnnotaWomEn · 24/08/2020 08:16

Of course there are. Always have been. Goes hand in hand with the anonymity and name changing.

MindyStClaire · 24/08/2020 08:17

If I were properly famous I would lurk on here and maybe post bland advice but there's no way I'd post anything remotely personal or controversial.

Imagine the tabloids if Kate Middleton left her phone somewhere and her MN username was discovered. Now those in-law threads would be good to read over a coffee. Grin

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/08/2020 08:42

I'm sure they are many famous people, but that's not the point.

MN is about being anonymous and is very egalitarian that way, so if you can end up having a fierce argument with someone you wouldn't do in RL, because you would be too starstruck.

Let's leave that way.

About 3, I couldn't work out how to do the carrier thing so just enough for the photographer to do her stuff.

Hee hee. If I was famous I would post good things about me (if I could think of any).
MNOverinvestor · 24/08/2020 23:49

Someone I know told me that they check to see what people say about their show on MN to get unbiased criticism.

ILoveFood87 · 25/08/2020 00:03

If she joked: "it makes me sound like a raddled old misanthropist, which is, coincidentally, my Mumsnet user name" , she's surely an FWR regular.Grin
Youcunnyfunt · 25/08/2020 00:31

Well, they’re just people too. Same old shit just a bit more money.

Someone was very rude about a relative of mine on here and I couldn’t help but let rip Grin it is quite infuriating reading incorrect “facts”. Not a household name, just someone known in their field (in case you’re nosy... and a few name changes back 😉). I’m not famous. Obvs.

MiddlesexGirl · 25/08/2020 00:34

I'm pretty sure Jo Brand is on MN somewhere.

Well I guess you'd know Grin

ImaWomAnnotaWomEn · 25/08/2020 09:06

I know it sounds rather vague, and they're not 'proper' celebs as such, but a friend who works in PR knows that the Love Island contestants, or if not their PR/agents regularly read the Love Island threads on MN. I suspect they got a bit more than they bargained for (!).

dangerrabbit · 25/08/2020 09:25

If I was a celeb I would love to read MN to get opinions which were not affected by my status.

Cheetahfajita · 25/08/2020 10:22

I LOVE Jo Brand.

Easily the best Jo on telly.

TheWashingMachine · 26/08/2020 18:22

Everyone refers to it periodically I'm sure for potty training advice or if their DC are ill, everyone just wants confirmation that what they are experiencing as a parent is normal, "famous" people have just the same challenges.
