Neighbour leaned out of the window to look at me?

I was vaping in the garden standing by my back door, had short shorts and a vest top on (I'm obese so would be very uncomfortable being seen) as no one can see into my garden otherwise.

My neighbour opened her upstairs window and leaned out of the window to look at me, I was on the phone so stared back, she looked very embarrassed and closed the window again.

Would you bring it up with her? I found it really strange she would even want to do that as she really has to stretch to see me.

Can you imagine the reverse to this, I was checking out the view from my window or I wanted to let some fresh air in, and i smelt a very weird smell. I looked down and my neighbour is just stood staring at me. There was no smile, no small wave, nothing.

Seriously, I think you’re overthinking this.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/08/2020 21:14

Honestly, if you are not someone who doesn't give a fuck, then don't go out in stuff you are embarrassed to be seen in. You say no-one can see in to where you were but that's not really true is it as you are overlooked by at least one window?

Sounds like she opened it for some reason, clocked you and then shut it again when you looked back.

pooopypants · 22/08/2020 21:15

I hope you logged it with 999. Sod that 101 bollocks.

You should keep a diary of happenings from here on in. You never know OP, you never know - looking today, but tomorrow? She sounds unhinged

🤔

@PhilCornwall1

Wondering if this will take over from the "I never answer my door" topic.

OP: my neighbour looked at me!!

Others: the bastard!!! I never look at my neighbours!!!

😂 My neighbours haven't put up curtains or blinds yet- so coming home in the evening, I try hard not to look at them as I walk up the path .
MistyGreenAndBlue · 22/08/2020 21:23

I did this. One night about 12:30 I heard someone repeatedly clearing their throat. I hung out of my window thinking it might be someone in my garden. I should have known it was the fella next door tbh as I hear that sound all day long but it didn't register.
There he was in his own garden just taking the night air.
I shot back inside when he looked up.
Just waiting for the local plod to knock on my door now. Grin

TorgosPizza · 22/08/2020 21:24

Yeah, sounds like she smelled something stinky odd and went looking for the source.

What was she supposed to do once she spotted you? Silently keep staring (with daggers in her eyes) until you finished vaping and went back indoors? Now, that might have been worth posting about!

Livelovebehappy · 22/08/2020 21:26

If I heard loud talking and saw wafting smoke outside my window, I too would have leant out to see where it was coming from if very near to my house. And if you came round to ‘discuss’ it with me, I’d tell you to get a grip and grow up. Sounds like you were looking for drama.

ILoveFood87 · 22/08/2020 21:26

I did this the other day but I was stretching to see my flowers and looked to the side and my neighbour was just there. I said sorry and closed the window but I don't know why I apologised I was just looking in my garden and she happened to be there.

ittakes2 · 22/08/2020 21:26

If she looked embarrassed it’s because she wasn’t expecting to see you - either that or she is pissed off at the foul smell of vap going through her window and wanted to tell you - but wasn’t expecting you to be wearing what you were wearing?

Thisismytimetoshine · 22/08/2020 21:29

Would you bring it up with her?
You cannot be serious 😂. And say what, exactly?!

Frannibananni · 22/08/2020 21:30

Vapes smell so weird. Maybe she thought there was a fruit salad burning in the garden.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/08/2020 21:38

My neighbours haven't put up curtains or blinds yet- so coming home in the evening, I try hard not to look at them as I walk up the path .

We had a new neighbour move in behind us with his 3 teens during lockdown, would never know they are there really, very quiet.

I did look a couple of times as I wondered how he maintained at least a 12 inch Mohican when I looked like a demented ferret during lockdown.

Clearthinking · 22/08/2020 21:39

Franni - yes this!!!

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 22/08/2020 21:48

My DP always refers to vape as Kipling smog, probably wondered where it came from and opened window to make sure nothing was burning.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/08/2020 21:52

999: What is your emergency?

Op: My neighbour looked at me!

999: .......

SquashedSpring · 22/08/2020 21:53

She probably heard something, or if the window was open she could have smelled your vape. She leaned out of the window to see what the sound/smell was. She saw you. She went back in.

What is there to bring up?

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/08/2020 21:54

She probably saw the clouds of vapour and thought something was on fire.

Noneformethanks · 22/08/2020 21:54

She either wondered what the smell or smoke was or heard you if you were taking.

What’s the big deal?

roundandsideways · 22/08/2020 21:54

My neighbours do this to me. I bow for them when I've finished whatever I'm doing. They're not even embarrassed.

madcatladyforever · 22/08/2020 21:54

She may well have been looking at something else or thought she smelled something then felt very embarrassed when she realised you were down there.

Dugsbollox · 22/08/2020 21:59

"Muuuuuuuum, she's looking at meeeeeeee!"

She obviously just heard/smelt something outside the back of her house and was checking it out. No big deal, and certainly not something you need to "bring up with her", for God's sake.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/08/2020 22:02

She has every right to look at you.

julybaby32 · 22/08/2020 22:10

I would always look and check that vapour or smoke, seen or smelt, was from a source that wasn't about to be a house fire. I would do it even if my house wasn't in danger, because of other people still being human who matter. One day, I did and it was, but it extinguishable before it got to the fire brigade stage.

Aesopfable · 22/08/2020 22:14

My kids used to do this:

“Mum! MUM! She’s looking at me! Make her stop!”

goingtotown · 22/08/2020 22:15

You’re a mumsnetter call the police.😀
