Neighbour leaned out of the window to look at me?

I was vaping in the garden standing by my back door, had short shorts and a vest top on (I'm obese so would be very uncomfortable being seen) as no one can see into my garden otherwise.

My neighbour opened her upstairs window and leaned out of the window to look at me, I was on the phone so stared back, she looked very embarrassed and closed the window again.

Would you bring it up with her? I found it really strange she would even want to do that as she really has to stretch to see me.

She probably heard and smelt you and wondered where it was coming from. You are being paranoid IMO.

QueenArseClangers · 22/08/2020 20:17

Have you logged it with 111?

Topseyt · 22/08/2020 20:18

Did she look at you wrong.

Call the police!

Teacup34 · 22/08/2020 20:22

Those things produce a huge cloud of disgusting smelling vapour she probably wondered where it was coming from, she would have slammed the window shut so she didn't have to inhale your poisonous fumes!!

Chloemol · 22/08/2020 20:25

She would be looking for the source of the revolting smell from the vape

VividImagination · 22/08/2020 20:26

We moved house because our neighbours smoked on their back doorstep and smell drifted in through our bedroom window any time it was open. She was probably letting you know how unpleasant it is.

Laaalaaaa · 22/08/2020 20:27

999 now. Ignore the posters telling you to log with 101. This deserves an emergency armed response.

They are worse than having a fag. One toot on a vape and it looks like November 5th!

😂 pathetic
Yes, you are being a bit pathetic.
Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 22/08/2020 20:36

Mn is so full of non events today!

CatSmith · 22/08/2020 20:41

I smell my neighbour when he’s smoking In his garden. I smell next door but one neighbour when he has a spliff. Whether I’m in my sitting room or upstairs, I smell it I don’t care what they’re wearing or how much it suits them, if I smell smoke I’m aware and I look outside.

isabellerossignol · 22/08/2020 20:41

Some people on Mumsnet seem to think that if someone glances in your direction it steals a bit of your soul or something equally dramatic.

saleorbouy · 22/08/2020 20:44

She sou ds like neighbourly neighbour who was just checking when she heard, saw or smelt something. The fact that once she recognised it was you she carried on her business suggest she's not wanting to be nosey.
I think you need to get a grip really, it's not her problem you don't like being looked at.

ilovesooty · 22/08/2020 20:46

I wonder how some people manage to go out into their gardens at all.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/08/2020 20:47

Wondering if this will take over from the "I never answer my door" topic.

OP: my neighbour looked at me!!

Others: the bastard!!! I never look at my neighbours!!!

Strawberrypip · 22/08/2020 20:50

OP, I hope this isnt a wind up but if it's not, I do actually get the paranoia and self consciousness that comes when you dont feel comfortable with yourself. I think you need to recognise this, as such a small thing which was likely caused by your neighbour investigating the smell or sound, has caused this level of overthinking.

i wouldn't worry about having a talk with your neighbour, it's sad to read you are so down on yourself though that you dont like to be seen. that stood out to me more than anything in your post.

Clearthinking · 22/08/2020 20:50

I always stick my head out the window, one neighbour has a bonfire sometimes, one has a log burner and the other a fire pit. When you smell something or hear something its a natural reaction to safely stick half of ones body out the window, grumbling and muttering to yourself (as if they can hear it) and give them a bloody good glare. She must have been caught red handed and recoiled in embarrassment!

Clearthinking · 22/08/2020 20:52

I live near a bridge so get jumpy at noises too, since someone lobbed a tile at the back door

Mooballs · 22/08/2020 20:54

If you're uncomfortable being seen one solution would be to wear an outfit that you're more confident in. That may reduce your concerns.

Darkstar4855 · 22/08/2020 20:56

Were you talking really loudly? My neighbour has endless loud telephone conversations in her garden and we can hear every word if we have our windows open. I don’t think she realises how loud and annoying she is.

Maybe your neighbour is trying a passive aggressive way of telling you to be a bit quieter!

tiredanddangerous · 22/08/2020 20:56

No. No I wouldn't bring it up with her because she'll think you're a fucking loon

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 22/08/2020 20:58

You've made an entire thread because someone looked at you...but we're pathetic...?

nannymags · 22/08/2020 21:01

it was quite likely the noise. people are often unaware of how loud they're speaking on the phone. Maybe she was looking to see where the person talking ws

WaynettaLob · 22/08/2020 21:09

Maybe she saw a cloud of smoke and thought "oo I do hope my neighbours garden / house is not on fire, I best check"
Then she checked, saw it was you just vaping and that's it.

oakleaffy · 22/08/2020 21:11

@purpleme12

So she looked at you? So what?
Reminds me of my little brother when we were kids- His catch phrase used to be 'Nooo, Don't look at meee '

We had a neighbour who had a video camera trained on the back of our houses/gardens- and that WAS invasive.
