To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

Origins Pinch Your Cheeks blusher. It never seemed to run out!

I used to wear Bourjois loose eyeshadow in a bottle with brush built in. Gosh thought I was so glam...

I didn’t wear much. But I had some Rimmel, a great Mary Quant Matt lipstick in deep purple. I had the holographic glitter, Lancôme juicy glosses

I have brown/hazel eyes so I loved gold eyeshadow , navy eyeliner and navy mascara .
Loved the BodyShop, they were one shop that had sealed mascaras so you knew someone hadn't opened your make-up to have a peer at it .

I have a BodyShop Beech lipliner than pre-dates my wedding . 25 years this year

Nirvana Impulse spray
Electric blue mascara but that was more late 80s and a L’Oréal foundation I can’t remember the name of but I loved it and it got discontinued, in sand beige.

Poison purple perfume - god that was amazing in the 90’s
Limara perfume and body spray (maybe 80’s tho)
I can still smell the shaders and toners sachets ! They did nothing hair wise.
Chloe perfume in the orange bottle
Rimmel foundation in too pale a shade
Flex yellow conditioner - brilliant
Body shop banana conditioner
Charlie, impulse, anais anais, dewberry and musk oil.
Purple mascara from Clarins and blue from No7 worn with blue eyeliner.
This is so nostalgic 😃

Constance carrol face powder, the smell was hypnotic.

Going back to the 80’s I remember my dm had a perfume called Tramp 😂 what a name to call a perfume?!

Overpowering perfume Poison was one and when you went to the loo in a nightclub you needed a gas mask for all the heavy perfume scents. I liked Obsession Calvin Klein or Lou Lou or Gloria Vanderbilt if I wasn’t rich haha

All the glitter and plaits and blue nail polish. Everything is too polished and grown up now!

Ahh that was Lip-Cote , I have seen it recently .
I know it used to sting like billy-o ( I don't know if I ever used it , I'm not a lipstick wearer , but my cousins did )

As well as a lot of previous posters' memories:

Byzance perfume by Rochas, in a dark blue flat bottle.
Max Factor Transparent Burgundy lipstick (to be fair, I am still wearing different versions of that to this day!).
Body Shop rosewater & vitamin E moisturiser.

Oh I know the one , they were flavoured too , mint , lemon or strawberry . And if you put them over lipstick, ooh the mess !

There was an advert (in the 80s) with a blonde haired woman in a silver dress flying through the air , taking her lipgloss out of her bag to apply a thick layer .

She snogged her beau without him looking like he's bathed in Vaseline and her hair didn't stick to her mouth .

And there was Lip Lickin Balm in a rectanguar tin with a sliding off lid .

I miss the boots Christmas catalogues, I thought those 17 and natural collection gift sets were the holy grail!

I used Miners, Stargazer, 17, Natural Collection, Rimmel, urban decay and Hard Candy.

I miss those days!

I wasn't familiar with any of the more expensive brands until I was a bit older and bought double wear.

I loved the body shop white musk, another one I can't remember the name of - I'll post again when I find it, so.... body sprays, impulse body sprays (a turquoise can) and Tommy girl perfume

Plenty of roll on glitter too! Oh and the hair mascara, oh dear!

Has anyone tried the ‘xhc ’ range of shampoo/ conditioner? It’s sold in places like poundland , savers etc. I think there’s a ginger one, a nice thick banana conditioner, a strawberry one...
Gave me a real rush of 90s body shop nostalgia! Very similar fragrances and left my hair really soft and shiny. Totally recommend!

For me it was MAC Viva Glam 2 lipstick topped off with their clear LipGlass (do they still do those?!) their volume mascara and L'Oréal foundation.

Nails were Spectacular or Boots Natural Collection, then moving onto Hard Candy when I was a bit older.

Does anyone remember Boots Global Collection toiletries? Similar to Natural Collection but themes around the world - Japanese scents, floral, icy/mint for Northern etc

Gorgeous Beverley Hills perfume - I can smell it now!!! Ocean Dream perfume was also gorgeous.

Love this thread...so many fantastic memories. In the late 90’s I got a job in a city bank and thinking I’d ‘made it’ (am from a pretty rough background 🤣🙈) treated myself to a bottle of Gucci Accenti. Would give anything to be able to lay my hands on one again...
