To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

Georgio Beverley Hills perfume (which I still love) and Wings perfume

GinWithRosie · 24/08/2020 13:08

It might be easier to ask who didn't wear Heather Shimmer 😂. I loved it 👍

Also 'Sun-In' for hair...which allegedly gave your hair a 'beach blonde' look, but in my case gave me patchy orange streaks 🤦‍♀️

MunicipalPetunia · 24/08/2020 13:34

In the very early nineties, a foundation by Sensiq (sp?) A few years later, Colour and Light by Max Factor, I think. Body sprays by Boots Natural Collection in Rose Musk and Oriental. Oriental was for the evening, naturally..
No 7 made a body shimmer, looked just like shiny talc, called Fairy Dust in a little cardboard pot which I still have.
Christian Dior Dune, when I had the money.

Blue and purple hair mascara.
Culturally appropriated bhindis in the late nineties
Ruby and Millie eyeshadow in a very vivid green.
Happy days!

GinWithRosie · 24/08/2020 14:14

Also 'sun shimmer' fake tan (also Rimmel I think?)

I had an unfortunate first date whilst wearing Sun Shimmer one time at Alton Towers...I was 17 and wearing white cropped trousers. We went on some ride that culminated in a huge splash at the end, where we got soaked through to the skin! Not only did my white trousers turn transparent, exposing my blue knickers, my 'sun shimmer' ran everywhere turning all my clothing orange and my body an embarrassing streaky mess 😳😂

My date was too young to be much of a gent unfortunately and didn't offer much in the way of support...either emotionally or practically 🤷‍♀️ Twat 😂

Emeraldshamrock · 24/08/2020 14:19

The Avon perfumes bring back memories they smelt like perfumed talc and the fancy bottles were very cute.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 14:27

The random Avon bottles are brilliant. Here's a lampshade full of scent! A pipe! A shoe! A telephone! 🤣 Fabulous.

ChicCroissant · 24/08/2020 14:33

I always wanted a ballerina Avon bottle of perfume. I did have a Christmas boot.

Horsebox36 · 24/08/2020 14:34

HariboLectar · 24/08/2020 14:57

Not make up but does anyone remember the little animal shaped hair brushes, frogs, pigs etc... they were either Body Shop or Boots and wooden without handles.

I've googled but can't find a picture of them Sad

PennyDreadfuI · 24/08/2020 16:00

Body sprays by Boots Natural Collection in Rose Musk and Oriental

I adored these! Rose Musk was my favourite smell in the world for a while. The Body Shop's Rose Musk oil was beautiful and I wish they'd bring it back. In fact I wish they'd bring the whole perfume oil bar back! They brought out one called Oceanus in 1995 and apart from the odd decision to have 'anus' in a perfume name it was gorgeous. One of those ozonic, green smells. Not like an anus at all.

Also, I still think that Madonna never looked better (apart from in her Frozen/Power of Goodbye videos, possibly) than she did in her Max Factor ads (1998/99, iirc). I bought everything she advertised because I'm easily led. There was a long lasting deep berry lipstick in a slim tube called Sin, I think, and it was one of my favourite lipsticks of the 90s. Looking back it was a bit dry and cakey but you could drink red wine and snog and smoke and feel just like Madonna while you did so, and your lippie wouldn't budge.

Not make up but those things from Avon you hung in your wardrobe that smelt nice and were full of little wax circles

MinnieJackson · 24/08/2020 21:05

Claires accessories shimmer in a puff!
I think it was called glitter babes in boots and that was hair mascara and things, but I remember weird bath pearls that always have me thrush Grin
Juicy tubes which I think are having a reboot soon!

MinnieJackson · 24/08/2020 21:06

Ooh and Versace red jeans perfume and an Anna sui one that I loved and could never find again in a purple bottle

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 21:09

@Derekhello...pomanders! I have bought a couple from eBay along with some of the Christmas soaps. I used to love the Avon book especially the Christmas one.

Oh Thankyou I couldn’t remember what they were called! oh yes the Avon book at Christmas, they used to a Christmas hand cream when I was a youngster (in the seventies not nineties lol) that smelt lovely...I’m off to have a google 😆

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 22:14

The Christmas soap fragrance I think was called "something special" or sth like that. My favourite Avon perfume was Moonwind. My mum had a tub in the bathroom and it was the smell of Sunday night bathtime.

Bassettgirl · 24/08/2020 22:21

A clinique lip colour... black honey?
Touche eclat
Rimmel concealer (still use)
Dewberry stuff from body shop
Kiwi fruit and morello cherry lip balm
Tommy Girl. I still always have a bottle of that.
Rimmel eyebrow pencil (still use)

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 22:35

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, you can still get it. They brought it back after customer demand. I've got one.

Bassettgirl · 24/08/2020 22:42

That's the one! Great to hear it's available again. Getting one Smile

taraRoo · 24/08/2020 22:44

It's shop bronzing pearls and loose powder. Plus all their lip balms (tasted like soap - no idea why I liked them)

Boeufsurletoit · 24/08/2020 22:47

Berry lipstick, black nails. Dewberry body spray, or Opium for special occasions. Collection 2000 face powder, and maybelline mascara that someone's dad brought back from America!

Boeufsurletoit · 24/08/2020 22:49

And Laura Biagotti perfumes were very popular at school for a while: Roma and Venezia.

ItsmineAllmine · 24/08/2020 23:03

Wow. To the poster who mentioned the perfume Monsoon Wild Lagoon, thank you! That's given me such a rush of nostalgia. I can't remember the smell but i LOVED the bottle.

Lovely reading throigh this and remembering things. I had a pot of white loose iridescent glitter from Miss Selfridge that I would wear as eyeshadow, often accessorized with little irridescent stars stuck to my face.

Remember bindi dots being massively fashionable at one point? Everyone wore them.

My first foundation was a Max Factor compact one. It had a little sponge applicator and you could apply it wet or dry.

Also everyone seemed to have those little blackhead remover things from the Body Shop, the little metal things with a hole in the end.

BusterGonad · 25/08/2020 03:26

I had Yardley Baroque perfume, I loved it.
I also bought the foundation and lipstick that Madonna advertised for Max Factor. She did look stunning on the adverts. I remember the foundation being really nice actually.
