To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

Just remembered hair mascara! Sticky, gloopy coloured streaks that either immediately disappeared or left marks all over your pillow!

Oldbagface · 20/08/2020 17:13

Not make up but Salon selectives shampoo and conditioner.

botswanabanana · 20/08/2020 17:14

None and I was certainly seen as pretty

Feel sorry for girls now for whom it's basically de rigueur if you want to be attractive

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 20/08/2020 17:15

Loving this thread! In addition to hair mascara - may I remind everyone of having two blonde streaks at the front of your hair (usually courtesy of bleaching with sun in).

Eminybob · 20/08/2020 17:16

I was just going to say the Miss Selfridge make up. I loved the silver eyeliner, I wore it every day even to school.

My foundation of choice was a cream compact from the The Body Shop. It was thick, matte and probably verging on slightly orange. So bang on trend.

I can’t remember the brand, but my lipstick was always a dark berry colour.

VirginiaWolverine · 20/08/2020 17:19

Presciptives magic face powder - the powder was suspended in some sort of liquid which vanished when you put it on, and it was really light compared to other powders.

And Guerlain Les Meteorites - I longed for a pot, but could never justify the cost.

And Clinique city block foundation, and Clinique Happy perfume.

And I would stock up on Vichy and Yves Rocher stuff when on holiday in France.

Therollockingrogue · 20/08/2020 17:21

@botswanabanana I don’t see it that way at all.
My teenage daughters rarely wear make up .
They’re fond of elaborate Korean skincare and obsessively flawless complexions, and they do like the drag queen esque look occasionally but I don’t think they feel make up is an essential. In fact the look is pretty cool and chilled. If you look
at lots of high fashion shoots and the way they translate to the high street, the natural healthy look seems more popular than ever.

For those who remember it fondly

HelloChompy · 20/08/2020 17:23

Heather Shimmer and Black Cherries lipstick for me too! I also wore a lot of spectacular nail polishes - there was a rouge noir lookalike - think it might have been called wicked wine?

I used to love the body shop of the old days with the perfume bar - white musk and fuzzy peach! I also used to wear Exclamation! So? and there were a couple of monsoon ones, one in a blue bottle and one in a brown bottle that I liked.

Late 90s I wore a lot of hair mascara, totally agree with @inappropriateraspberry 🤣 Also the glitter and I seem to remember white face powder being a thing too late 90s 😬 I have a photo of me looking very Casper like.....

formerbabe · 20/08/2020 17:24

I used to buy these packets from the chemist called Liptips...there were six or so in a pack and looked like cotton buds but instead of cotton wool on the end there was lipstick...does anyone remember them?

Therollockingrogue · 20/08/2020 17:24

Covergirl ‘very berry’ lipstick !
And tribe perfume

Therollockingrogue · 20/08/2020 17:25

Yes @formerbabe!
And remember the body shops little papier poudre books?!

formerbabe · 20/08/2020 17:27

Pleased it's not just me who remembers them @Therollockingrogue. I wish you could still buy them!

30under · 20/08/2020 17:28

I've still got some Heather Shimmer lipstick!

formerbabe · 20/08/2020 17:29

Id happily wear heather shimmer today

Buttybach · 20/08/2020 17:30

Natural collection palest concealer and Number 7 as they did a paler one. I am very fair skinned.

Mac Gleam lipstick. I still have a tube and it smells chemically but looks the same.

Chanel rouge noir after pulp fiction. I still have the bottle and it still works!!!

I also had a shimmery rose pink lipstick from Lancaster and I was gutted when they stopped producing cosmetics

I also used dewberry and rose scent from body shop. I also had cucumber body spray until someone told me I smelt like a salad!!

Blackcurrant66 · 20/08/2020 17:32

Eyeliner on the waterline of the lower lid

I can’t remember what foundation I used at all but everyone had the lipstick style Rimmel concealers.

botswanabanana · 20/08/2020 17:32

Good to hear @Therollockingrogue

Dd is 9 right now so hoping she doesn't go down the clown route we see in the area

PennyDreadfuI · 20/08/2020 17:39

Just googled Spectacular nail polish because I couldn't recall it and was immediately hit with a massive smack of nostalgia!

Wow! Completely forgotten about this nail varnishes! I definitely had the 2 darker colours!

OLGADEEPOLGA · 20/08/2020 17:49

Gypsy impulse
Yardley make up
Almay make up
Heather Shimmer lipstick
White musk

Calic0 · 20/08/2020 17:51

@PennyDreadfuI

Oh Stargazer was such a goth staple! And Leichner foundation - Camera something I think it was called? They did a pure white one which I loved. Of course.

Yy to Black Cherries! I discovered it in the late 80s when I only had a Saturday job and money was tight. I can picture the little push-up tube so vividly.

I loved Fuzzy Peach from The Body Shop - if anyone can suggest an alternative I'll be forever grateful! Other perfumes I wore included Vanilla Fields, Coty Wild Musk, Opium, ones by Yves Rocher (Ispahan and 8th Day), Magie Noir, Paloma Picasso, Eden, Casmir, Tocade, Deci Dela, Angel... I loved perfume and still do!

Shay and Blue do a scent called White Peaches which is (I think) similar. I was more of a Body Shop White Musk girl myself. And remember having Charlie White as well. And then graduating on to CK One which EVERYONE wore because we were all a little bit in love with Kate Moss.
TSSDNCOP · 20/08/2020 18:05

CKOne scent. Also Safari by Ralph Lauren graduating to Allure by Chanel by 1999.

Flicky black liquid eyeliner.
Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara
Avon bronzer

I also had a fabulous dark pink lipstick by Max Factor but I cannot remember the shade now.

For my wedding in 1999 all my make up came from Elizabeth Arden from the counter in Selfridges.

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2020 18:14

Obsession was the one most of the men/boys I knew slathered themselves in before trying to get served in the pubs. That and Cool Water.

I bought DP a bottle of Joop not long ago and was instantly 19 again when I caught a whiff

Therollockingrogue · 20/08/2020 18:16

The Leichner foundation is still available, and hasn’t changed a bit. The smell is pure nostalgia. Although I’ve only ever seen it on indoor market make up stalls so it could just be original stock. Nevertheless it’s as good as we all remembered ! Camera clear I think 🤔
