To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

I had a Cover Girl book with different 'looks' to copy! It must have been free with a purchase. I was always looking at it and thought the styles were so classy!

Gurtcha · 27/08/2020 09:23

I was still quote young in the 90s and only really getting into makeup etc.

I remember Boots Natural Collection and had a vanilla lip balm (more towards 00s though I think) and Collection 2000 - blue mascara, hair mascara and roll on glitter! They also had a younger cheaper version of No7. Was it No2? I had a baby blue nail polish.

Impulse sprays. I used to like the green one and of course the limited edition spice girls one. My friends used to like Charlie Blue and Red but I didn’t.

Timotei shampoo. That had a natural highlights one towards the end of the 90s which I loved.

I was very much a T-Shirt and Jeans kid/teenager. I’m so unbelievably happy the grungy look is back in fashion!!

Gurtcha · 27/08/2020 09:24

Body shop fruit soap and bath pearls!!! I nearly forgot!

Gurtcha · 27/08/2020 09:28

No17 that was it. Thanks @belvoirbeaver!

Spectacular Nail Varnish. 99p. Amazing colours. My favourites were shimmering royal purple (called Saturday Night Fever) a bright simmering neon pink (Brighton Rock) and metallic silver which looked almost mirrored. Also the tiny Miss Selfridge nail varnishes, they seemed to bring new ones out every week. There was a metallic mid blue called petrol, I haven’t been able to find anything like it since anywhere. And the glitters! I used to buy tubes of glitter gels and squeeze them onto my cheeks. Urban Decay did a tin of eyeshadow called ultraviolet that really did look ultraviolet. The body shop for perfume, White Musk, Mostly Musk, Anaya, Vanilla, Coconut that place was heaven.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 27/08/2020 10:07

I loved the petrol spectacular nail varnish! Such a gorgeous colour! But my favourite was "ballet slippers" I think it was number 001. (I wanted to buy them in numerical order but the shop didn't always have the right ones in to do so. It was the palest pink. I thought I'd get away with wearing it in ballet class. I didn't. Grin

@BusterGonad

geekone Heather Shimmer never went anywhere, it's still for sale!
I did see it a few years ago but It’s just not the same. (Clearly my skin is just the same as when I was 20 so it can’t be me 😂)
CaffiSaliMali · 28/08/2020 10:21

I was too young for lipstick in the 90s bar freebies in tween magazines so I'm very tempted to buy a Heather Shimmer lipstick to see what it's like!

nandaandm · 28/08/2020 10:34

Max Factor panstick
Leichner
Fuzzy peach from the Body Shop
Passion fruit lippy by Rimmel - lilac pinky
Number "52" lipstick by Barry M - shocking pink
Avon bronzing pearls
Avon Arabian Glow bronzer

thatsforsure · 28/08/2020 11:09

Omg Ananya from the body shop I had forgotten that!

Going back a decade or so I was obsessed with my Iron Lady lipstick from Miss Selfridge - I dont think it really suited me but we all wore it!

aeiou12345 · 28/08/2020 12:21

@formerbabe

I used to buy these packets from the chemist called Liptips...there were six or so in a pack and looked like cotton buds but instead of cotton wool on the end there was lipstick...does anyone remember them?
i still have a pack 😂 i used to looooveee these 💓💓
backmadeofglass · 29/08/2020 18:02

@formerbabe I loved liptips, they did eye tips too!!

formerbabe · 29/08/2020 18:06

@backmadeofglass. I think I remember them too!

dms1 · 29/08/2020 18:43

Rimmel Pale Ivory Foundation
No7 liquid liner
Estée Lauder China Red lipstick
Chanel Rouge Noir nail polish at weekends; French polish during the week
Barry M glitter tubs eye shadow
Estée Lauder Beautiful perfume or the original Nina. The new Nina is horrible & smells nothing like it. It saddens me when perfume goes out of production. Really missing Antonio’s Flowers Tiempe Passate.
My very first lipstick was Yardley Rasberry Ripple. My room always smelled of Dewberry from the Body Shop. Also used Johnson’s baby lotion as a body moisturiser which came in a pink bottle. Love this thread!

Bassettgirl · 29/08/2020 18:47

Oh yes, I had a no7 liquid eyeliner too.

igot20joe · 29/08/2020 18:53

Lulu Blue

ShopHero · 29/08/2020 19:19

Quite embarrassingly I still have a lot of the make up mentioned here including a book of Papier Poudre - wonder if it’s worth anything on eBay??

Remember the tattoo stamps in Chinese writing? Think it was Maybelline who did those. A little silver pot and the ink was dried up when I bought it in Superdrug so it never really worked. Yep I still have that too.

Zfactorstar · 29/08/2020 20:39

Anybody else remember blue mascara? I'm still not convinced it was really a thing and not a bad memory

justasking111 · 29/08/2020 20:50

I wore blue mascara, cannot recall the make. I also wore Nars liquid eyeliner in a bottle with a tiny brush separately

PlanDeRaccordement · 29/08/2020 20:52

Silver eye pencil. It really contrasted well with my skin tone (Brown).

Immigrantsong · 29/08/2020 20:52

I still wear blue mascara!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 29/08/2020 21:00

I have a friend who used to wear blue mascara in her top lashes on one eye and pink on the bottom. She did the reverse on the other eye. That was early 00s though!

Mary46 · 29/08/2020 21:20

Great thread. Laughed at dewberry and fuzzy peach. Both fab. I loved pink grapefruit too. Lou lou perfume was big then.!!

Cotswoldmama · 29/08/2020 21:44

Rimmel heather shimmer or Black cherries 🍒

moreginrequired · 29/08/2020 22:34

Ice blue shampoo from the body shop
Monsoon shimo perfume
Covergirl clean make up and those ridiculous tiny hair clips that are worse than Lego if you stood on them.
I loved 90s make up but wonder if my nostalgia is based on being young and having decent skin at the time!
