To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

My flatmate worked for Trish McEvoy. He would bring me free makeup. I loved it.

HoHoHolyCow · 21/08/2020 13:28

At The Body Shop, you could choose your own selection of products in a straw basket (all sitting on shredded paper), and then they would put some kind of cellophane over it and heat it so the basket was really tightly covered...I used to love doing these for friends' birthdays!

naptimeismyhappytime · 21/08/2020 13:37

Heather shimmer! All my make up was rimmel or number17.

naptimeismyhappytime · 21/08/2020 13:38

Impulse Vanilla kisses body spray 😍

AriesTheRam · 21/08/2020 14:12

17 Bon Bon lipstick
Rimmel birthday suit lipstick
Charlie Red body spray

My most favourite was Gio by giorgio armani. Its been discontinued and if I smelt it bow it would take me back to 1998.

I always remember that every transformative magazine makeover and every aspirational article involved a bobbi brown nude lip pencil (Just outside the natural lip line!).

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 21/08/2020 14:40

Also does anyone remember this pot of body lotion from Natural Collection that was stripey, one stripe body lotion and the other stripe this kind of syrup?! It was sticky and horrible to be honest but for some reason as a 13yr old I used to slather it all over my legs, I think mainly because I liked how it looked in the pot!

Yes! Strawberry ripple or something? I loved it. Natural Collection was the poor woman's Body Shop, I'm sure that they had their own versions of White Musk and Dewberry perfumes too. Bath pearls, animal shaped soaps and fruity lip balm pots all at pocket money prices, unlike TBS.

Gosh yes Sun Moon Stars perfume!
I’d forgotten about that. The bottle was so nice! Ah memories 😊

@Sunshiney1981 am guessing by your username you may be my age. I remember half my friends (including me) having our bedrooms decorated like the bottle! Blue eberhwre with the old touch of gold stars

BusterGonad · 21/08/2020 15:09

I had the raspberry ripple body lotion, I too loved it.
I also had the No17 uv nail polish.

ichifanny · 21/08/2020 15:13

Talking of body lotion, I remember when Palmer's Cocoa Butter came out - summer 1992. I remember because I was obsessed with Siobhan Fahey's Shakespear's Sister look and I have vivid memories of sitting in my local on Portobello Road covered in sequins wearing practically a whole pencil-worth of Boots 17 black glitter eyeliner, and smelling like a bar of chocolate. It's still my favourite body lotion (especially the solid one which goes liquid when you put it on your hands. SUCH a novelty when it came out!).

Sensiq brand and Ruby & Millie we're faves of mine...,

Along with far too any idea those listed above!

As a 19 year old I loved reading this! Courtney love style is very ‘in’ right now, in the more alternative scene anyway

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 21/08/2020 15:44

Those little bath pearls the body shop used to do in different colours full of bath oil and when the temperature was hot enough they would pop and melt

I'm 50 and I've just bought a new pair of DMs and a slinky ivory satin slip dress which I plan to wear with MAC Dubonnet lipstick and smudged eyeliner, if we ever get to 'out' out again. I might just have to wear it to Aldi if not. And I might draw the line at a tiara this time round. Might.
@Lillygolightly I use Essence mascaras (you can get them in Wilkinsons or online Justmylook with free postage). They're all around £2.50 and they're fantastic. I'm currently using the volume one in the fat purple tube and it's the best I've ever used - even better than Maybelline Great Lash!

I still have a bottle of LouLou (and Eden, and Anaïs Anaïs). LouLou has I think aged the best. Does anyone remember LouLou Blue? It was in a transparent blue bottle and came out around 1995. It was absolutely gorgeous. It's the summer of 1996 in a bottle for me.
I remember Lou Lou Blue!

natwebb79 · 21/08/2020 19:51

I saved up my pocket money for weeks to afford a Chanel Rouge Noir lipstick. I thought I was the duck's nuts.

Emeraldshamrock · 21/08/2020 20:11

I loved my blue eye liner, lots of hairspray, rimmel cherry black lipstick. I was really bad at applying makeup too. Blush

I remember my Mam and I looking at it in Boots but she wouldn't let me buy it Shock

I had some amazing scented glitter nail varnishes from Avon in the late 90s - one was red and smelled of strawberries and the other was orange and smelled of oranges. I loved them so much, I wore both on alternated fingers to school.

I had an impulse spray in a pretty and gold tube. Can't remember the name but I adored the smell, then it got discontinued. I still have a can at my parents house Blush

Perfume wise my sister in law wore red door and Burberry (the classic one). Mam wore Anaïs Anaïs - I used to sneak in her room to wear it.

Not the 90s but I really miss Dior's Midnight Poison which was a limited edition. I wore it all the time at Uni, as did a housemate so our house always stank of it. I wear Pure Poison now but it's not as good.

ChicCroissant · 21/08/2020 22:33

I had a friend who wore Samsara perfume, it smelt absolutely fabulous on her. I tried it in a shop and it was terrible on me!

lovelymm · 22/08/2020 18:22

This might be a bit too 80s but electric blue mascara and Avon Iced Champink lipstick. This is a lovely thread 😍

SylviasMotherSaid · 23/08/2020 00:52

Love this thread . The ones I remember are Gap Dream perfume ,Ralph Lauren Polo Women perfume . Miss Selfridge makeup I remember buying berry lipstick and nail varnish thinking it was very Posh Spice around 1997 . Body shop hair perfume we all used to take turns spraying it at lunchtimes . Spice Girls Impulse spray . I loved Yardley makeup too I thought it looked really classy sitting on my dressing table though don’t actually think I ever used it it looked so nice . Another brand I think called Almay ? sold in Boots which had lipsticks in a silver packaging . A Virgin Vie sort of creme bronzer in a gold tube which lasted for ages . Would love to go back in time and stock up in a 1999 Boots just for the nostalgia value . Remember buying a Chanel lipstick for £13 with pocket money in 1998 and the smell from it was so lovely and expensive .
