According to the radio 4 show "More or less" this morning some students might not get they're teacher predicted grade. As there's another assessment I'm distraught. I have so much pinning on this tomorrow :-(

Flowers fantastic- well done!

DrManhattan · 20/08/2020 13:40

Thanks for your reply. I have emailed the school !

MJMG2015 · 20/08/2020 15:04

@Menora

That's very disappointing for her. Will she do the Autumn resists?

Poor kid 😢

TheFallenMadonna · 20/08/2020 15:12

Congratulations Lowhangingfruit!

Finally got DD's results and have sent them off to the 6th Form she wants to go to. Relief!

MJMG2015 · 20/08/2020 16:37

@gubbbbbddaaaa

How did your DD go?!

MJMG2015 · 20/08/2020 16:40

So many people not reported back - I hope they're out celebrating and not rocking in a corner somewhere 😢

She probably would have got more if she sat them but we are happy we can move on to A level .. she got ranked 1st in one her 9's in the school so that's pretty cool! Thanks for asking 🥰

MJMG2015 · 20/08/2020 16:51

@TheFallenMadonna

🌷that's brilliant! Such a relief isn't it!

Niece got the results she was expecting, so will get into the 6th form course she wanted. Much relief that the results reflect her expected ones.

Ok I’ve decided to complain to the school about English. I had a really good think about it and I really am so disappointed in the year 11 teaching. Last year I was emailing the teacher never had any response, asking for help and support for my DD. I have proof this and also sent that too.

DD kept telling me that she never got any feedback on her work and even took to submitting practice papers to the teacher who never returned them.

I looked back on all of her grades which read:
Years 8, 9, 10 - level 6
Year 11 - level 5
Results - level 4

SmileEachDay · 20/08/2020 17:06

Hi - you are, of course, able to talk to the school. There is (currently) no appeals process for the result though. The only way of improving it is by doing a resit.

Menora · 20/08/2020 17:12

I know, but she’s done no English work since March and it won’t matter - she can’t get onto 9 of the A Level courses because of it, including one she wants so badly and had done loads of the summer work for. She didn’t fail, she got a 4. But the impact has been so limiting. I just said I wanted to raise it with them because her overall experience was so majorly disappointing in this subject (I didn’t name the teacher in my email but one of my screenshots was directly to her). It’s just crap for all of them. All her other grades were pretty in line and I did say I was very happy with the school otherwise

They're great results!!

It's a shame she might have got more if she'd have sat them, but they're still brilliant and (tbh) if it allows them to move onto what they want to next, anything else is just a nice bonus really isn't it!

We haven't been given the 'firsts' yet, but I think she with get the first in maths & maybe more, not sure. Always hard to tell! She's very laid back (it's not really ok to be envious of your intelligent, relaxed, 'sorted' niece is it?! 🤣)

MJMG2015 · 20/08/2020 17:24

@Menora

I'm sorry my other posts seem inappropriate now yours are there, they weren't when I was writing mine -sorry 🌷

I think you've done the right thing taking it up with the school. It's a shame there's no appeals process. You'd think, especially given everything that's happened, that they would be able to!!) the Autumn exams are not going to help those who have missed out on courses for Sept start!

It's such a shame she can't get on the course she's already started working towards!

I know you've already spoken to them, but I wonder if there's any point in putting it in writing as a more formal appeal against their decision - with the stuff you sent to the school?

It's just so wrong.

gubbbbbddaaaa · 20/08/2020 17:28

@MJMG2015 yes we are looking forward not back .. ours came with a ranking in that grade next to the actual grade and against the other students .. was quite fun really ( prob not for the ones at the bottom ) .. 😬😬...

Menora · 20/08/2020 17:32

No no honestly, I don’t mind at all and well done to all the kids (and grown ups!)
My DD got some amazing results I’m so happy for her, I think I am just frustrated by this I could see it coming and nothing we could do!

TheFallenMadonna · 20/08/2020 17:39

Wow. Giving the ranking is a bit brutal.

Menora: There isn't a mechanism for appealing because there were no real criteria for CAGs beyond professional judgement. The CAGs were always supposed to be standardised on some way, but, unsurprisingly really, there is no way to replicate the results of exams not taken, and even then, the ranking by schools was always going to be preserved. I can only imagine the frustration.

SmileEachDay · 20/08/2020 17:40

Menora

You may have answered this early - apologies if so.

Have you spoken to the Alevel provider?

Menora · 20/08/2020 18:03

Yes we spoke to them even they raised an eyebrow as she got a 6 in history which is pretty tough subject, but the grade is the grade so no allowances

SmileEachDay · 20/08/2020 18:07

Menora

That’s really difficult. I’m sorry she can’t progress in exactly the way planned- does she have a solid plan B?

Definitely worth re approaching Alevel provider - if the course isn’t full in a week or so and she commits to a retake (can you afford a tutor?) they may flex.

Menora · 20/08/2020 18:57

Yes she’s got other options and we are going over those a lot! She’s very lucky to be in a strong position otherwise, especially in one subject she loves

I’m just frustrated. I could see this happening in 2019 and I was trying to make contact and get some feedback on how we could improve this as DD dropped to a 3 in mocks very suddenly.

DD says this happened in her opinion as the teacher was moved into and SLT post and so they moved the sets around to mix with a set 3. When this happened, the set 3 children were already struggling with this teacher, she struggled to contain the class, spent most of the lesson repeating things they had already done, would forget to mark things and not hand them back - DD handed in 3 practice papers early this year and never got them back marked. When the mock came back it had no constructive feedback on it and she kept asking the teacher to explain, she stuck on some kind of list to the front of everyone’s mock and DD did not know which bits related to her work or not.

I took one of DD’s papers in Feb and got a tutor to look at it and give her the feedback on what to improve and where. Then COVID happened

Menora · 20/08/2020 18:59

She also said in one lesson the teacher spent it crying because someone in SLT had been horrible to her. She told her class all about it!

Menora · 20/08/2020 19:05

I’ve asked for DD’s ranking as I am prepared to accept that this is not poor teaching if everyone else did pretty well, and just one of those things and perhaps DD just found English too hard - clearly she was finding it hard, and wasn’t getting any help was my main point though. Kids should not struggle with no help even I wasn’t getting replies to my requests for feedback. If the teacher was struggling, did no one know?

From DD’s friends so far in class it seems that they all were similar but I will be able to see for myself

Lowhangingfruit · 20/08/2020 19:22

Hi everyone I'm sorry to say but not all my classmates passed a level 4, so I haven't said my score yet as I don't want anyone to think I'm being gloaty. Any tips on how to do it sensitively?

OP posts:
RainbowRaine · 20/08/2020 22:29

Lowhangingfruit you say "I got the results I needed" and leave it as that.

It's what I have told everyone who asked how my DC did today.

Menora · 21/08/2020 08:57

Just to update, my DD got her place on media after all. Head of year can’t understand her English grade either 😂

Thanks everyone
