to suggest that half a baguette is enough?

Preparing a super-healthy (not really) lunch for me and DP of pork pie, cheddar cheese and that bread that comes part baked from the supermarket.

I comment that the bread is packaged as two small baguettes together, so I will have to freeze one once opened. DP says he "could have" a whole baguette. I ask him if he really wants a whole one - we normally share one. He says the same thing again. I read out the suggested serving and calories and say if he really wants a whole one I can freeze half of one, as I definitely don't. He goes off in a huff because I have apparently called him greedy and he only wants half. I cook one baguette.

My point is that at no point did he say he wanted a whole one just that he "could have" a whole one. I thought this was just a suggestion to make it easier wrt freezing.

Me checking the suggested portion size and calories was for myself. I concluded I did not want a whole one, so him having one would make no difference to ease of storage. Admittedly I did not explicitly state this, and I did not need to read it aloud to him, but I was labouring under the misapprehension that he was making a suggestion to try to make things easier, not that he actually wanted a whole one. I did not at any point use the word greedy or mean to imply it.

Was the whole thing just a misunderstanding on both our parts (and he should at the very least snap out of his huff), or am I being unreasonable and should apologise for 'calling him greedy'?

Hard to say. How big exactly is your partner's baguette?

My brother can regularly cook and eat four of those with melted cheese on top for lunch, plus two bags of crisps and an apple on the side. It’s a standard sized meal for him. He’s not overweight at all.

I however am insanely jealous of men and their metabolisms!

Is that a Granny Smith or pink lady Apple? Grin

DrDavidBanner · 18/08/2020 20:18

@Wecandothis99 it lacks crisps I feel

Yes, and some pickle to go with the cheese and (slither of) bread

Or maybe some pickled onions

NotMyFinestMoment · 18/08/2020 20:18

@sirfredfredgeorge

And it sounds like there's a background of you policing his food, which is why he couldn't just say, I'm hungry, I'd like a whole baguette.
This.
shinyredbus · 18/08/2020 20:18

urgh - you actually read out the calorie count to him?! Jesus. If this was a reverse - you would be torn apart. Stop policing food - its rude. He's an adult, let him eat what he wants! Imagine if he said to you - do you know hoe many calories in a pork pie?! Christ alive.

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 20:24

@DrDavidBanner I make you right, some pickle wouldn't have gone amiss!

Mintjulia · 18/08/2020 20:27

With pork pie & cheese, nope I’m with you OP, unless he’s a manual worker who has put in 6 hours before lunch, he’s greedy.

How is his waistline?

Oakmaiden · 18/08/2020 20:39

I hate it when my husband tries to police what I am eating and drinking.

WhatamessIgotinto · 18/08/2020 20:40

Do people really get worked up about stuff like this? FFS let him have a baguette if he wants one, you're not his mum.

Fruitfly906 · 18/08/2020 20:42

You silly sausage, this is CHILD ABUSE CHILD ABUSE CHILD ABUSE WineWineWine

MrsGimpy · 18/08/2020 20:46

OP, is the issue food waste, rather than calorie intake (it's a bit too much unless he's v active imo lol)?

I can imagine men I've lived with being annoyed about limiting their food intake, when I wouldn't have said anything. On the other hand, I'd be a bit annoyed about using 2 baguettes, only because it would be a waste (a cut in half one wouldn't keep or reheat well), especially if on a budget. Maybe don't buy them in future Grin

caringcarer · 18/08/2020 20:54

Give him the whole Babette. He told you twice he could eat it.

Widowodiw · 18/08/2020 20:59

I have no ide why you even needed to make a thread about this tbh. If he wants a whole baguette which he clearly did, you should have read between the lines and gave him the whole baguette. My 9 and 11 year old could eat most of a whole one tbh so he couldn’t have probably eaten two .

Mancity100 · 18/08/2020 21:11

Controlling behave by you , if it was a man telling you what you could eat would be classed as domestic abuse

kateandme · 18/08/2020 21:12

he was eating intuitively and wanted the whole thing. you looked at the calories and serving to see how much to ALLOW yourself and then what, your hunger suddenly became less to fit the numbers on the packet?yeh right i know whos eating patterns is healthier here.

Onthetrain75 · 18/08/2020 21:19

Not sure why you’d be that bothered given that you are both eating the absolute fat fest that is a pork pie?!!

MrsT1405 · 18/08/2020 21:20

They are no way baguettes. At the most they are large French rolls. Baguettes are at least 30 cm long and you could easily let him have a whole one and done without if it bothers you so much

ThirstyGhost · 18/08/2020 21:26

If it helps OP, this is the kind of trivial, mindless crap that I find myself and my partner bickering over after 5+ months of lockdown, home schooling and working from home. I took the huff the other day after he ate the apple pie that was left in the fridge in the middle of the night, leaving none for me. I wouldn't worry about it, honestly.

Babyvibe · 18/08/2020 21:37

Let the man have a full baguette. Who cares.

ILoveFood87 · 18/08/2020 21:41

YABU OP. Give the man a full baguette.

motorcyclenumptiness · 18/08/2020 22:21

To quote Frasier:
Roger, at Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. Roger, if I were using that microscope right now ... I still wouldn't be able to locate my interest in your problem. Thank you for your call.
Smile

WhatamessIgotinto · 18/08/2020 22:48

My DH eats shitloads. He could easily (and does) hammer one of those baguettes and he'd still be hungry. Lockdown has made me see just how much he eats particularly at lunchtime. He does a lot of sport though.

LucyFox · 18/08/2020 23:03

If you mean one of those part baked baguette things that are about 8” long then you are being v unreasonable, half of one of those is not a substantial meal! It depends exactly what else you were having with it, but a whole one of those is surely not unreasonable if it’s a major part of the meal?!? I suspect you came across very controlling when you started reading out the calorie count 🙄 Bread isn’t low in calories, but if that was your point why on earth were you also eating pork pie?

Barrowmanfan22 · 19/08/2020 00:01

OMG. Imagine living like that. You sound exhausting. Who cares !
And for what it's worth if my OH read out the serving suggestion and calorie count id be done Grin
