to suggest that half a baguette is enough?

Preparing a super-healthy (not really) lunch for me and DP of pork pie, cheddar cheese and that bread that comes part baked from the supermarket.

I comment that the bread is packaged as two small baguettes together, so I will have to freeze one once opened. DP says he "could have" a whole baguette. I ask him if he really wants a whole one - we normally share one. He says the same thing again. I read out the suggested serving and calories and say if he really wants a whole one I can freeze half of one, as I definitely don't. He goes off in a huff because I have apparently called him greedy and he only wants half. I cook one baguette.

My point is that at no point did he say he wanted a whole one just that he "could have" a whole one. I thought this was just a suggestion to make it easier wrt freezing.

Me checking the suggested portion size and calories was for myself. I concluded I did not want a whole one, so him having one would make no difference to ease of storage. Admittedly I did not explicitly state this, and I did not need to read it aloud to him, but I was labouring under the misapprehension that he was making a suggestion to try to make things easier, not that he actually wanted a whole one. I did not at any point use the word greedy or mean to imply it.

Was the whole thing just a misunderstanding on both our parts (and he should at the very least snap out of his huff), or am I being unreasonable and should apologise for 'calling him greedy'?

@Bluntness100

Exactly, so why couldn't he put his own baguette in the oven

Seriously? Is that what you do? You put your baguette in the oven then your partner has to walk over and put his in? Or vice versa? Because if you do it for the other you’re parenting them?

That’s very odd. Generally whomever is doing it does for both. But you do you. 🤷‍♀️

Generally adults get their own lunches. If my partner offered to make lunch but I wanted an extra slice of toast / half of a baguette / whatever it may be then yes, I would suffer the trial of having to "walk over" (all of 6 steps) to the oven and add something.

I'm craving baguette now!!

Pork pieandcheeseanda baguette - or half a baguette - is a shit ton of calories regardless. All those carbs and all that fat. Where's the salad?

😆

Ohtherewearethen · 18/08/2020 19:49

In most functioning homes adults can feed themselves. Therefore if I wanted something slightly different to what my partner was making I'd sort out the difference myself. Then everyone is happy.

But the OP was making the exact same thing. I'd find it so petty and annoying if my husband was making baguette, pork pie and cheese but made me put my own baguette in the oven, a few seconds either side of him doing the exact same thing. The exact same thing.

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 19:50

@Lockheart should they put the baguettes on separate baking sheets when they're simultaneously baking them?

Maybe if they have two ovens, they could use separate ones?

Honestly, how ridiculous he should do his own baguette!

Op, when you read out the calories, you were doing it for your benefit? Do you always read out loud like a five year old?

You were being really PA, hope your DH got his whole baguette!

chickenyhead · 18/08/2020 19:51

The OP was grasping the packet reading the serving suggestions. I'm sure if he rugby tackle it out of her hand this would be fine. Read the OP again.

Not in my house they don't! We are like proper adults and one or other of us does the lunch depending on what's going on. You don't sound at all adult in your house. You sound like petulant teenagers, who say ridiculous things like "I'm not putting yours in as well"!

We prefer to be adult about such things!

Funguy · 18/08/2020 19:53

I hope you aren't like this in bed...

How ridiculous that a man should suffer the indignity of helping to make his own lunch? Really?

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/08/2020 19:54

Well, my imaginary wife, each cook our half lentils separately, ourselves.
Later on when we each have a half load of washing each, again we separate it out, we never do things for each other.
Actually I'm currently quite pissed off as she's owed me 3p for 7 hours now and I'd like it back.

transformandriseup · 18/08/2020 19:57

YABVVU even though half a baguette would be enough for me personally it realise it may not be enough for my other half.

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 19:58

Sigh.... fuck all to do with him being male and all today with the stupidity of him having to put a second baguette along side his PAs other baguette.

Not everything is about being male and the thread has nothing to do with the distribution of workload. It's about a half or a whole baguette....

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 19:59

*to do

Diva66 · 18/08/2020 19:59

By the time you’ve scoffed the pork pie and the cheese the size of baguette really won’t make much difference!

Lockheart · 18/08/2020 20:00

It's not petty, if I wanted an extra slice of pork pie for example, or an extra bit of cheese, I'd just cut extra if my partner hadn't done enough for me. It's the same thing.
VivaMiltonKeynes · 18/08/2020 20:02

That wasn't even worth the read...

gingerbiscuits · 18/08/2020 20:04

I can't take this seriously - you typed all of that about a baguette argument?? Hilarious. Who gives a toss if he has a whole or half? I'd be more concerned about the pork pie to be honest!! 😆😆

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/08/2020 20:04

if I wanted an extra slice of pork pie for example, or an extra bit of cheese

Am I missing something? It wasn't an extra baguette. OP was cooking the meal and her DP wanted a whole demi baguette rather than half. Surely the meal preparer (whoever it is) can accommodate this?!

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 20:08

It really is totally ridiculously petty! It's also not what the thread is about! So DH is cutting cheese, he puts four on each plate as I say "could I have five", if he said I haven't got time to do another slice, I would just laugh. He could've done it whilst saying I don't have time!

Anyway OP had accepted she's wrong and you should too @Lockheart ! You're looking more and more petty, saying ridiculous things like "perish a man needs to help with lunch", the OPhad nothing to do with that.

Wecandothis99 · 18/08/2020 20:10

That sounds like a bloody amazing lunch

doityourselfnow · 18/08/2020 20:10

@Wecandothis99 it lacks crisps I feel Grin!

nitgel · 18/08/2020 20:12

@BaronessBomburst

Hard to say. How big exactly is your partner's baguette?

WaltzfortheMars · 18/08/2020 20:13

What's wrong with people these days, I've read a thread someone was unhappy about BF's comment asking what he meant. Now this. Why is it easier to post and ask MN what the person meant, rather than asking them yourself? We can all give speculation but that's it. Way more easier to ask, " do you want whole or half?" to him. Non issue.

Wecandothis99 · 18/08/2020 20:13

@doityourself ah yes!! Salt and vinegar, of course!

Jamhandprints · 18/08/2020 20:13

Those baguettes are quite light and thin so not as filling as they look.
I get upset when the chocolate packet tells me its "perfect for sharing" so I'd definitely be annoyed if my partner tried to control my bread portion.
Also I find it annoying when people take delight in splitting one serving between 6. "And we all had plenty!"
So I think yabu but maybe I'm a bit grumpy.
