'chester freezer'

I'm not defending chester draws, but at least I can understand how it happened.

I've just seen someone talk about their 'chester freezer' on Facebook. There's no excuse.

@MitziK, no, I don't think so. I live nowhere near Bootle and I think I originally came across this school's name because they were in the news for a legal issue to do with interpretation of TUPE after the original school on the site was closed and a free school took it over. I was so gobsmacked by the name that I wasted a lot of time trying to find out where the name came from and my best guess was it was because it was near a Hawthorne Road.

I like bomsitit, @MrsKoala! Grin

Tissert...as seen on market stall.

When it comes to school work being marked, I think teachers are trying not to discourage children by correcting every single mistake and returning a piece of work covered in red or green ink. I'm not saying it's right, but I don't think it necessarily means that teachers haven't spotted errors.

Mxflamingnoravera · 16/08/2020 14:04

I got a text asking me to meet my (dyslexic) partner at Made of Ale tube.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/08/2020 14:07

It never discouraged us at school. If anything it meant we tried hard not to have all that red ink there. But that grades were also a part of our final grade, so extra motivation.

I suspect that the discouragement may be a factor and you are right. Ties with the over encouragement like "you can ve anything, no matter what". Reality is that you can't. And it hits people hard later. There should be some realism, but not "beating down" applied. I've met people who were INCREDIBLY unrealistic about their future because "we were told at school that we can be anything". We were encouraged to aim high, but within reason. If you see what I mean?

Amymone · 16/08/2020 14:07

Bloody hell. Of course teachers should be accountable for teaching children correctly 🙈. That is literally the point of them!

@TheSockMonster

Looking through DD’s books at a school open day 2 years ago, I spotted something along the lines of ‘her Mum said “take this basket of cakes to Aunt Martha and be careful because there fragile”. She put on her boots and started walking towards her aunty’s house’

‘Aunty’s’ had been underlined in green pen and she had been asked to write ‘aunties’ out 5 times at the bottom of the page. ‘There’ remained unchallenged.

Same teacher used to confuse ‘thank you’ with the noun ‘thankyou’.

I never did pluck up the courage to say anything. She is an intelligent and educated woman and it made me wonder what mistakes I’m making without realising!

The noun 'thankyou'? Confused There is no such noun.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/08/2020 14:28

I so love temporally closed. It's very Douglas Adams.

Yankathebear · 16/08/2020 14:29

@ifhedoesntlikeithecanstuffit

I asked DD (12) to do something the other day and she said 'no, I can't be arsed!'

Or so I thought. When I challenged her on her rudeness, she thought it was 'can't be asked'!

Hope she hasn't said that to her teachers.....Grin

My dd used to say that!
ifhedoesntlikeithecanstuffit · 16/08/2020 14:32

@coronafiona

I don't like 'myself' as in you can refer that to myself' it's ME!! Argh!
I am so with you on this one - it really makes me fume.....!! You hear it all the time, even from quite senior/public people! Grrr.....
sashh · 16/08/2020 14:34

One of my, sort of, favourites was, "We are teaching you this so you will be more readier..."

From someone who was supposed to be assessing my English.

She also used to 'correct' my UK spelling to US, and she I totally confused her by using the less common but still valid spelling 'gaol'.

Lweji · 16/08/2020 14:37

In the ‘should be no excuse’ category was an email from our MP (female LD in case anyone instantly assumes Evil Male Tory) saying that the council was going to ‘kerb’ anti social behaviour.

Was that a reference to inconsiderate parking?

Interesting, although I'm not entirely convinced. It's certainly not in my (large) dictionary as either a noun or an adjective.

Reedwarbler · 16/08/2020 14:50

I have a friend who had 'aquapuncture' treatment.
My fil suffers from, according to him, prostrate cancer, gluecoma and arthuritis.
I listened to a primary school teacher reading to her class. She pronounced Acacia Avenue as Akka Seeya avenue. I was shocked, but having read what I've read on here about teachers and their spelling, perhaps I shouldn't have been.
My pet hate, especially on mumsnet, is the misuse of 'Rein', as in 'rein it in'. People seem to have no idea of its equestrian origins, and think it has something to do with the monarchy 'reigning'.
My most recent tooth grinding moment is a sign that has gone up locally. It is a plastic engraved one, so someone has gone to the trouble of having it professionally produced. It's about the closure of a leisure area temporarily to, quote "help the spread of covid 19". I think the word they wanted was hinder, not help, unless they are genuinely trying to spread it around!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/08/2020 14:54

'Help prevent' is probably more expected...

Somewhere I have a condom from the 90s in a wrappwr that says 'helps prevent contraception'.

ifhedoesntlikeithecanstuffit · 16/08/2020 14:55

@PenorPencil, @MerryMarigold, @Velvian, @Yankathebear I am starting to get worried that people are moving the wrong wording into common language......?

The thing is - 'can't be asked' doesn't make sense. Of course you can be asked and you may say yes or no - in what way do they think this is a response to a request?

Someone mentioned the Jamaican pronunciation 'arksed' but I don't think that's relevant, it's just a 'yoof' way of saying asked. CBA is still just a rude way of saying get stuffed (and I have been known to say it myself)......Grin

MrsKoala · 16/08/2020 14:58

Suspicious packages was one that I used to notice a lot. Haven’t heard it for a while. I also am funny about the word hopefully. I know it seems to be accepted usage but if someone says ‘I’ll hopefully see you on Sunday’ I always imagine I will see them on Sunday bursting with optimism. I would say ‘I hope to see you on Sunday’. Never hopefully.

sunglasses · 16/08/2020 15:16

I have really enjoyed reading some of these. My daughter used to think we were going to A place called ‘Hamster teeth’ whenever we talked about taking her to the park in Hampstead Heath! A lot of kids at school thought we were closed for ‘insect day’ and I have frequently heard kids being reminded to bring a ‘pack lunch’

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/08/2020 15:44

Insect day is quite a common one. It makes as much sense as anything else to the children.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 15:48

@UnaCorda, on the property threads there are mentions of curb appeal.

KOKOagainandagain · 16/08/2020 15:49

INXS is pronounced 'in excess' - not inks. Hope you haven't said this in real life.

merryhouse · 16/08/2020 16:09

keepon - the comment told of the poster's belated realisation of this fact Smile

BrandyandBabycham · 16/08/2020 16:18

My sis in law always says “ rest bite”. There are so many. I always itch to correct people but you can easily upset folks as they could be dyslexic or have learning difficulties. Sometimes it’s just predictive text, although I always go back through correcting before I post.
