To think if you chose to go abroad during a pandemic it serves you right?

I get that folk feel they deserve a holiday, but if you travel during the current pandemic you shouldn't complain if rules suddenly change before you get home.

Anyone with half a wit could see that it was a risky thing to do to take a holiday at this time.

YANBU really.

I do think that some people have exceptional circumstances, though; not everyone going abroad is swanning off on a jolly.

I don't subscribe to this "serves you right" view, but one really ought to employ a little common sense when it comes to travelling UNNECESSARILY during a global pandemic. We are not idiots, I'm assuming.

Isinknot · 14/08/2020 01:43

@Comtesse
So you think the virus will "be kind"?

TitsOutForHarambe · 14/08/2020 01:53

There are all sorts of reasons why people travel during a pandemic, so YABU. If they've gone on a holiday then yeah, it seems daft, but there are plenty of other pressing reasons why people are travelling at this time. Some people have responsibilities in other countries and sometimes relatives get sick and die etc.

WanderingMilly · 14/08/2020 01:55

I get what you mean. If you choose to go abroad you accept the fact that, in a pandemic, things are going to change as the situation changes, and it could mean sanctions or quarantine when you get back.
Not sure it "serves them right" but yes, it is part of the risk.

ilovesooty · 14/08/2020 02:07

It would cost me more in fees and lost work to move my flights than it would cost me for a one off specialist policy to insure myself for my planned holiday. I'm working from home currently so fully accept the quarantine restrictions.

namechangetheworld · 14/08/2020 03:10

Also those that CHOSE to book a holiday during this pandemic clearly have short term memory loss of lock down. Imbeciles.

This.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 14/08/2020 03:16

I get travelling to see a sick relative but just for a normal visit or holiday I don’t get. The virus spread around the world by travel in the first instance. You’d think we would all want to do as much as possible to stop it spreading.

I agree if you choose to take the risk and go, regardless of when booked, you can’t then moan if you get stuck, insurance is invalid or you have to quarantine etc. Nobody needs a holiday, a want us very different.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 14/08/2020 03:21

My brother in law was diagnosed with a severely life shortening illness just before Covid struck. As our borders are shut there is a real chance my husband wont see his little brother alive again. So, no, you don't need to visit your granny, or travel to your ever so secluded villa or whatever right now. This virus travels like wildfire, I just don't get why people don't miss their summer holiday for just one summer.

@Bapples

PerveenMistry

“Boo hoo.

I do condemn those who are so self-centered that all they think of is their own family's gratification.

Sorry but no one ever died of missing their relatives. If it's that important, don't make a life abroad in the first place.“

Oh silly us, I see where we went wrong now! My husband should have seen this pandemic coming when he moved to ireland 10 years ago! Of course it’s all his fault that he made a life abroad! 😂 Your comment is pathetic and stupid. And as I said we have chosen NOT to see his parents but I have chosen not to be a smug covid keyboard warrior judging everyone else’s choices.

I'm thousands of miles from my mum and dad too. And no, I didn't take unprecedented pandemics into account when I moved.

I do hope Perveen never has to have the conversation I had with my elderly parents during the early days, "if we die, please don't come to the funerals, protect DD".

I won't see them for months now. And I haven't for more than a year. It's normally every few months. Hug your DH from me @Bapples or a manly shoulder punch, his choice.

TitsOutForHarambe · 14/08/2020 03:52

Ok Hmm

Aridane · 14/08/2020 04:05

What an unpleasant post / OP.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 14/08/2020 04:06

Quaagars

I agree completely.

The only thing I’m finding annoying is people travelling back from these places and not quarantining when they are supposed to be. They just don’t care and are extremely selfish. I know a couple who are just carrying on as normal after returning from Spain. They’re working, shopping and socialising. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Their Facebook is apparently full of things to do with being responsible, protect others, wear masks, support he NHS etc. I could really get worked up about it but it’s pointless.

lovelemoncurd · 14/08/2020 04:17

Aren't people allowed to post controversial things on AIBU anymore? Clearly we don't just have Covid police but Mumsnet ones too!

No op YANBU. I have someone on Facebook who still keeps telling everyone they are over reacting despite 50 K deaths later and now she's on her second European holiday of the summer. Next year she will probably post and say she didn't know what all the fuss was about. Personally I will be waiting to next summer it's not too hard to just fill my life with other things.

Babyvibe · 14/08/2020 04:29

If people have pre booked holidays before covid and are going to lose out on loads of money I can understand why they would be encouraged to go (I still wouldn't). However no sympathy for people booking now.

Aridane · 14/08/2020 06:15

Of course they are - just like posters are free to say the poster and post is unpleasant

Got an STD? Serves you right

Husband a waste of space / cheating bastard? Serves you right for being such a poor judge of character

House burns down and your favourite bit of sentimental jewellery isn’t covered because above individual item limit? Serves you right - should have read insurance policy better

Child does badly at school and worse? Serves you right

Wecandothis99 · 14/08/2020 06:17

Literally count care less what other people do. Make decisions for me and dont bitch about others. Try it

Wecandothis99 · 14/08/2020 06:19

Kisskiss · 14/08/2020 06:37

YANBU.
The airbridges aren’t being revoked for no reason.. the virus numbers are pretty unpredictable so whilst the govt probably did make a mistake by implementing lockdown so late, they are trying their best to allow holidays by putting in airbridges when they can. If numbers flare up, what do you expect them to do? Quarantine is unfortunately the only way really to try and keep the population safe from imported cases.
So yes, it is a massive inconvenience to whomever it’s affecting but they shouldn’t complain as the situation is not easy and this is unavoidable action. If you book a holiday you know there’s a risk of this happening..

Pixxie7 · 14/08/2020 06:37

People have been given so many mixed messages it’s not surprising people have taken some time out for a holiday. Additionally as a pp said given the state of the uk I really don’t see how we can quarantine from countries who have done much better than us.

Drumple · 14/08/2020 06:50

Not everyone is going on holiday. Friend of mine due to fly for work purposes. Not exempt due to job or anything. Was expected to travel until quarantine announced last night.

Tini17 · 14/08/2020 06:58

This.
Bollss · 14/08/2020 06:59

Imagine your life being so shit that you start a thread on MN about other people's misery being deserved.

SunshineAndButtercups · 14/08/2020 07:00

“serves you right” sounds sanctimonious and judgemental. I would think a lot of the people who have gone abroad this summer have done so with the realisation that quarantine could happen and this is based into their assessment as to whether to go or not

Friendsoftheearth · 14/08/2020 07:01

Allowing the travel industry to resume in the middle of a pandemic was a huge mistake; when the inquiry takes place the glaring mistakes will be obvious, leaving it too long to lockdown in March will be one, lack of testing and PPE in care homes another and reopening the travel industry far far too soon. The government should have held their nerve, in a similar way to NZ and Australia.

As a result, many parts of Europe will have to go back into another strict lockdown again to get the virus under control, therefore defeating the economic objective of reopening in the first place. Whether the UK have acted quickly enough with the quarantine measures to avoid a full lockdown will be known in three to four weeks from now.

Those suggesting other countries have 'done much better than us' are clearly looking backwards not forwards. We have hopefully learnt a great deal from the first wave, and will be in a strong position to apply this knowledge for the second.
The UK currently has 18 cases per 100,000 which is acceptable, France has 30 cases per 100,000 and as hire as 50 in Paris and Marseille. Spain is at a very worrying 98 cases per 100,000.

I hope those that are overseas find their way home safely and easily.
