To think if you chose to go abroad during a pandemic it serves you right?

I get that folk feel they deserve a holiday, but if you travel during the current pandemic you shouldn't complain if rules suddenly change before you get home.

Anyone with half a wit could see that it was a risky thing to do to take a holiday at this time.

@MsTSwift

“Serves you right” is such a childish mealy mouthed phase. I have a picture in my mind of what this op is like. She would be one of those dreadful snitchy little self righteous kids at school.
This.

I went abroad. It was fabulous. Then quarantined at home. That was fun, too. Good times. I'd do it again. I holiday in the UK, too. I travel as much as possible. Have no plans to stop, either, have some weekend breaks planned in other parts of the country, going to see friends.

Doesn't seem to have stopped people, either, flight coming back from Europe was full.

ilovesooty · 13/08/2020 23:52
@ilovesooty we couldn't go on our May holiday but insurance would have let us claim (booked ly) however we just moved it to next yr.
I shall try to move the flight to later in the year. I only have until 31st December though.

SaltyAndFresh · 13/08/2020 23:52

It's easy enough for people able to work from home to shrug off quarantine. As usual, it's the people who have to take on the most personal risk by working in public places who get the shitty end of the stick by risking disciplinary action / going unpaid. I'm really sick of the inequity of it.

GabsAlot · 13/08/2020 23:53

i said this aswell twiter ha blown up over it-is it really that shocking we're ikn the middle of a pandemic countries numbers are al over the place

if yub ooked before all this then course its comepltely understandable

ChainVaper · 13/08/2020 23:53

@BigChocFrenzy

We all take risks with something, whether it's going on holiday, buying a new car or whatever

It's nasty to gloat and be smug when things go wrong for other people

This totally . Well said BigChoc
MsPeachh · 13/08/2020 23:53

It’s the risk you take, and I personally wouldn’t choose to go abroad at this time, but I feel like the government have actively been encouraging people to go? Hmm there’s even an advert on tv! So I wouldn’t begrudge anyone for wanting a holiday.

ilovesooty · 13/08/2020 23:53

@rorty

fingers x they will cancel the flight. Who's it with?
I hope so. Ryanair.
dwiz8 · 13/08/2020 23:53
@dwiz8 it isn't simple I'm afraid. The flight is still operating whether or not I choose to get on it and I've been told that under those circumstances I can't make a claim.
Told by who? If the FCO advises not to travel you can claim on insurance for the costs of the flights and accommodation

Did you get cheap insurance?

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:54

I personally thought the gov knew this would happen but the travel
industry wouldn't accept a blanket ban. This way people still went on holidays, booked flights & companies could still get money & hold it to it, try & make you move booking rather than refund etc

ryanair are not the best for customer service & would probably fly into a war zone to avoid processing refunds.

Lockheart · 13/08/2020 23:55

I do find it odd that so many people say they "need" or "deserve" a holiday abroad.

You objectively do not need it.

Holidays abroad are fantastic, no two ways about it and I won't argue that point, but you no more "need" a week in the south of France than you need a diamond necklace or I need those Jimmy Choos.

We seem to have totally lost sight of the fact that holidays abroad are luxuries that we are lucky to have, not essentials that life is not worth without.

We can do without them. You might not like it, but you can go without going abroad. Promise.

I say this as someone whose partner is in America and who I've not seen this year for obvious reasons.

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:56

Sorry but no one ever died of missing their relatives. If it's that important, don't make a life abroad in the first place.

Wow

CheshireChat · 13/08/2020 23:56

I have limited sympathy for those who've booked holidays after the pandemic started as surely they realised things can go pear shaped? Which doesn't necessarily mean they shouldn't be traveling just realise things could go wrong and plan accordingly.

Completely different for those who've booked before and now risk giving up their holiday and losing their money.

RhiantheMunter · 13/08/2020 23:57

People can do as they please but it's pathetic how shocked everyone is everytime a new country gets added to the quarantine list.
Ffs Get a grip. If you're shocked then let me tell you about a strange virus called Covid19 - where the fuck have you been in 2020??
People need to really start grasping that life as we knew it in Feb 2020 is no longer the norm. You could plan a day anywhere tomorrow uk/abroad. There's a good chance something to do with Covid will.or could impact it. Be annoyed. Be fed up but please don't be shocked and say well wtf am I gonna do now?
If you have plans to go away right now then surely at some point in recent days or weeks you've considered the possibility of this happenning.

It's all getting a bit tiresome.

And I say this as a person who has missed several trips and 2 holidays abroad during this shit year and was even checked in at the airport for a flight when it was cancelled thanks to Covid back in March. I wasnt massively shocked then. I think if by August your shocked that Covid may impact your plans you can probably consider yourself thick as shit.

Brdudes most people don't seem to actually be quarantining themselves from.whst I've seen. I'd not even policed??

Prettybluepigeons · 13/08/2020 23:57

I'll tell you what..this virus has really shown up how many thoroughly unpleasant, petty, unkind, smug, officious people there are about.

ilovesooty · 13/08/2020 23:57

No @dwiz8 I didn't. I'm insured with Aviva. I will contact them tomorrow but my policy documents seem to indicate that they won't allow a claim.

I don't recall saying I was shocked. What an unpleasant post.
Jihhery · 14/08/2020 00:01

What's scary is how much people trust the government. They said it was ok so people assumed it would be ok. Now they're often shocked and outraged because they weren't given a warning that no thinking individual would need.

dwiz8 · 14/08/2020 00:03

@ilovesooty

No *@dwiz8* I didn't. I'm insured with Aviva. I will contact them tomorrow but my policy documents seem to indicate that they won't allow a claim.
Ah so you haven't spoken to them...

Goodness me

CheshireChat · 14/08/2020 00:03

Also, it shouldn't matter which company you use, there should be better regulations across the board and fewer loopholes.

Someone who isn't very educated or bright or knowledgeable should be able to buy insurance and expect a decent minimum of help if they make a claim.

And just to clarify the above doesn't include ilovesooty she's far more capable than the randomer I've imagined!

The poster hadn't even asked their insurer if they can claim. So made such remarks based on an assumption

My 21yr old son is in Italy on a long planned holiday with his girlfriend. I hope they have a lovely time and no, I don't think that they 'deserve' to get Covid19 but I do find your attitude disgusting.
