To think they'd already sold it?

Long story short, my freezer is dying a slow death. It may last another month, but I can't take the risk. As the fridge, while still OK, is the same age, I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone as it were and replace both.
Saw a small fridge/freezer on FB marketplace that had only just gone up. I messaged asking if it was still available and saying that, if it was, I could collect at their convenience.
When I've gone on messenger, they've seen the message. Then underneath my message it says "X sold fridge freezer".
As they haven't responded, should I assume that I just wasn't quick enough or should I just wait and see if they respond tomorrow before looking again?

It’s sold which is why they didn’t reply.

@BluebellForest836 that's what I suspected. It would have been nice for them to message and apologise, but I can understand them not, given how some people react. I just hate uncertainty.
Will look again in the morning and hope to find something affordable.

Why would they need to apologise??

You're giving this too much headspace. Just find another one.

Why would they apologise to you ? You aren’t owed an apology from them.

They put it up and marked it as sold so they had another message at the same time I guess or it was on other sites too.

Replying and saying it’s sold would of been nice but it’s been marked as sold so not necessary either.

The point of marking something as sold on marketplace is so that you don't have to do individual replies
You will not be the only one who messaged

If I had an item on marketplace and had sold it, maybe I'm in the minority, but I would not just mark it as sold and not respond. I would reply saying that, I'm sorry, but I've sold the item. Otherwise I would feel like I'd ignored someone.
Plus, the item was marked "sold" AFTER I messaged. This is why I'm not sure if it is me or someone else. Yes, I do know I'm not the only person who is going to message, but a little courtesy goes a long way. Maybe I'm just too polite for my own good.

If you can afford a cheap fridge-freezer then it's probably best to buy new as you don't know what's wrong with a used one.

This has happened to me, it is annoying!

I am extremely polite, and fair on FB Marketplace. Excellent customer service is a big part of my job and I havd been doing it for so long that I just naturally apply it in every area of my life!

You'll find on marketplace that most people aren't like us OP! Grin

You are aware how many people express interest right? Last item I sold I had over 60 messages in the first few minutes.

No one owes you an apology, they marked it as sold which tells you all you need to know

If yours is on its last leg then there's nothing to stop you putting it up for sale on Facebook market place is there?

Meaning, you really would be better off buying new. There's too much that can go wrong with second hand white goods.

@Lovely1a2b3c I can't afford a new one. My current fridge and freezer are around 30 years old. My parents bought it when they did the kitchen about 30 years ago. Not sure exactly which year, only remember helping them fit the kitchen and that we then switched from a fridge/freezer to the separate units. Being on universal credit, what I can afford really isn't going to stretch to a brand new unless I don't eat for the month!
@TokyoSushi I don't buy much on there, only a couple of things and have been lucky to deal with polite sellers who responded either saying the item had gone or that it was still available. It seems I've been lucky until this point.

@gamerchick I'm not putting a 30 year old freezer on marketplace. Neither am I putting a 30 year old fridge on marketplace. Even if I did, with my current budget, and what I might be able to sell them for (basically, I'd probably have to pay someone to buy them), I still couldn't afford to buy new. Not everyone is in that lucky position.

In that case you can’t afford to buy a second hand ff that goes wrong and you have to fork out to replace.

Sometimes these things happen. I posted something on two different groups. One approved my post the other approved it 30mins later. By the time the second one approved it Id someone already expressing interest.

@TatianaBis So, as I rely on a freezer, what do you expect me to do? I can't afford to buy brand new right now. Maybe in 3 months I could save enough up to get new. However, my current freezer will not last that long. The fridge might, but I really don't want to take that risk.
I'm really sorry that not everyone lives in the world where you just go and buy brand new everytime something breaks. Not everyone can afford that. I really don't care if the fridge/freezer I buy dies in 4 months time as I would be able to afford to buy new at that point.
I'll take the risk of buying secondhand.

If you can afford to buy new in 4 months time then why not buy new now with an installment plan or a pay-nothing-for-X-months thing like a poster upthread suggested?

I got all my white goods on gumtree, maybe try there if marketplace isn't working out. The man even delivered for me. Better to deal with a (semi) professional. Then you've more chance of them being reasonable if it does go wrong.

@CaptainCabinets You need to have a full time job to get credit and I don't work full time (not able to work due to disability). I did look into it before heading to marketplace. If I'd been able to get one on credit (much as I loathe it), I would be there first thing in the morning.

What's with all the shitty and judgy replies? Op I think it's fine to expect a bit of basic courtesy, I always notify interested buyers with a simple "Sorry it's now sold". Take a coupld of seconds and gives clarity all round.

OP, I don't think @gamerchick is suggesting you put yours on Marketplace - she's making the point that you've got no idea of the condition of what you're buying. You could end up shelling out for a fridge/freezer which is also in the final stages of its life.

Have you got any shops that sell seconds/pre-loved white appliances in your area? We have one shop like that round here and although it's more expensive than Marketplace, it's still cheaper than new and you get a guarantee.

Re the politeness thing, they were probably inundated with messages. I put a dressing table on there a few months back and I was literally flooded with messages, some of which were incredibly rude and demanding.

We've got an acts of kindness FB page where you can request/offer items for free. It might be worth looking for a similar thing nearby? Ours is more responsive than marketplace
