To think they'd already sold it?

Long story short, my freezer is dying a slow death. It may last another month, but I can't take the risk. As the fridge, while still OK, is the same age, I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone as it were and replace both.
Saw a small fridge/freezer on FB marketplace that had only just gone up. I messaged asking if it was still available and saying that, if it was, I could collect at their convenience.
When I've gone on messenger, they've seen the message. Then underneath my message it says "X sold fridge freezer".
As they haven't responded, should I assume that I just wasn't quick enough or should I just wait and see if they respond tomorrow before looking again?

@Koelner

If I had an item on marketplace and had sold it, maybe I'm in the minority, but I would not just mark it as sold and not respond. I would reply saying that, I'm sorry, but I've sold the item. Otherwise I would feel like I'd ignored someone. Plus, the item was marked "sold" AFTER I messaged. This is why I'm not sure if it is me or someone else. Yes, I do know I'm not the only person who is going to message, but a little courtesy goes a long way. Maybe I'm just too polite for my own good.
I usually do that, but sometimes you get loads of people asking and its time consuming replying to them all.
AnotherEnigma · 14/08/2020 12:14
@AnotherEnigma so, what would you have me do? Lie to get credit? Hope and pray the current freezer that is dying lasts the 4 months until I can afford new? It's all well and good saying it "could be a pig in a poke" but none of you saying this have had a viable option for me that doesn't involve getting into debt.
You need to calm down. The way I read it, gamerchick is trying to be helpful by pointing out you could be buying something that is in a worse condition that what you have now.

Geppili · 14/08/2020 12:16

Hi op one thing I have done on FB is put out a wanted advert for stuff I need. Hope you find something cheap and good!

Hippofrog · 14/08/2020 12:17

Do you need a freezer? I coped without one for a few months and just used the fridge. Missed ice cream though

Koelner · 14/08/2020 12:19

@AnotherEnigma yet none of you have anything to suggest that I do given I have a freezer that I will be lucky if it lasts until next month. As I said, it's all very well pointing out pitfalls, and I am well aware of them, but it's not helpful to say you're pointing out a potential problem yet can't offer a viable solution.
I can't get credit (and even if I could, I wouldn't because it could potentially double the cost vs buying outright), so cannot buy new. All I can do is trust that whatever I buy secondhand is genuine and, if not, it lasts 4 months. There are no other viable options right now.

@Hippofrog Not having a freezer really isn't an option.

Maybe you missed my post, but rental could work for you in the short term until you’ve saved for a new one

Here’s one company, I’m sure there’s more

www.hughesrental.co.uk/refrigeration/fridge-freezers/

Koelner · 14/08/2020 12:33

@SingleHandSue The rental term is a minimum of 12 months. As I would be able to afford to buy new in 4 months, it's not the ideal. Also, from past experience (my parents rented appliances when I was younger), when rental companies go bust (as happens more often than with companies you buy from), finding out who is now in charge of your rental agreement can be near impossible.
I'm more wary of rental companies than some pp are of buying secondhand.

TimetohittheroadJack · 14/08/2020 12:34

Have you checked Gumtree as well OP? Ideally you want to try and buy from a ‘posh’ area as chances are the seller is getting a new kitchen and appliances fitted. We have got second hand fridge freezers, dishwashers and a washing machine this way. Only thing is you generally need to pick it up so need a big car and some strong help.

If you can’t pick up try the British Heart Foundation charity shops, they usually have loads and will deliver.
If your on universal credit there might also be some smaller charities that will get you one for free, google starter home packs in your area.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 14/08/2020 12:56

Stuff on FB does tend to go really quickly. Definitely join all the local FB selling groups you can as you will then get notifications for every new post. And as a PP suggested, put up a Wanted ad on those groups - could be someone has one sitting in their garage unused but can't be bothered to list it, and your post will prompt them.

If you see something on FB that's a bit out of your price range, message and ask if they'll accept what you can pay - don't give a hard luck story (this pisses people off as you often then find out the person is telling porkies) just say "I'm really in need of a freezer but I have a maximum budget of £X, would you consider this for cash?" Don't feel embarrassed to ask, haggling is normal on FB (in fact there was a thread about it recently.)

Also join your local Freecycle and/or Freegle if you haven't already. You never know.

Hope things look up for you soon OP Flowers

daytripper28 · 14/08/2020 13:04

@dwiz8

What the heck were you selling to get 60 messages in the first few minutes? My DS is guessing a Honda Jazz for £200 - hehe

[disclaimer - I am ridiculously nosey and don't have much on today Grin ]

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 14/08/2020 13:04

OP I hope you manage to get something sorted soon. Second hand is better for the environment sorry you're getting such a bashing.

Only thing is, have you got someone to carry, fit and transport it for you?

ChilliBeanSauce · 14/08/2020 13:05

OP posts like yours are sadly why I no longer sell anything on FB marketplace.

daytripper28 · 14/08/2020 13:08

To the OP - keep looking on the Facebook - we have had some real bargains there. My son got a massive virtually new TV for free!! He saw it appear and responded immediately - lucky.

Also we bought a roof box for our holiday on facebook for £40. To hire one would have been £60 and a 30 mile round trip. Got our roofbox from the next village (2 miles away) and then we have re-sold it for the same when we got home.

daytripper28 · 14/08/2020 13:09

"price

daytripper28 · 14/08/2020 13:11

@ChilliBeanSauce

Confused

The OP doesn't understand the ways of the Facebook.

She is being 'educated' by this thread.

Recyling is great and you don't have to pay fees on facebook, unlike Ebay.

What is not to like?

Enchantmentz · 14/08/2020 13:11

There can be some gems on the marketplace especially for white goods. Check your local selling pages too as not everything goes on marketplace. I have never had a brand new fridge freezer and only been burned once but was partially my fault. Check charity and furniture initiatives in your area, they basically sell 2nd hand or ex display stuff that has been pat tested.

I know you said you can't get credit because interest would over take that and you aren't working. But I am unemployed and managed to get credit of buy now pay later(pay balance within 12months no interest payed) on Very for twice the amount for a decent fridge freezer. They can over inflate prices so cross check what they are selling with other retailers if you do that.

As for the no response thing, sure it is polite but I would be satisfied seeing it marked sold as sometimes people just don't have the will or time to respond to every message when one will do.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 14/08/2020 13:11

2nd hand fridge freezer - yuck - find another way with x months free credit or something.

Confused What on earth is yuck about a second hand fridge/freezer? If you sold your current fridge/freezer because you were getting a new one, is your current one in that much of a state? What does that say about you? My fridge/freezer would be perfectly clean and usable and definitely not yuck for someone else. It’s just yours that is yuck. Maybe try cleaning it. Wink

Other replies have also been judgemental. What on earth is wrong with people?

Hope you find one OP. We sold our ‘old’ fridge and freezer when we had a new kitchen, they were perfectly fine to use, nothing wrong with them at all. Not everyone sells stuff that is ready to break. And if no one bought second hand anything, the planet would be in a worse mess than it already is!

Very weird replies.

Hoggleludo · 14/08/2020 13:14

@Koelner

Actually @Hippofrog is right. You could easily last months without a freezer. Buy chickpea. Lentils. Packet soups. Hardly anything needs freezing. You could even salt items. There are ways around having a freezer.

Needs must and all that. Living without a freezer is actually a lot easier than you think

No medicines need freezing either.

Salting works. Google it. Even meat doesn’t need freezing. You just need to be organised. That’s it.

God I've put things on marketplace and have had 100 odd replies, no way would I reply to every one. The 'mark it as sold' functionality is to notify all interested people that it's gone.

Winterwoollies · 14/08/2020 13:20

This is such an odd and overly long thread about some poor sod who innocently sold a fridge freezer on Facebook and behaved normally...

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/08/2020 13:22

Why wouldnt you see if it can be repaired? It may just need the cooling agent to be recharged.

CodenameVillanelle · 14/08/2020 13:23
@BluebellForest836 that's what I suspected. It would have been nice for them to message and apologise, but I can understand them not, given how some people react. I just hate uncertainty.
Will look again in the morning and hope to find something affordable.
You can get 10-20 replies to an ad so marking it as sold is a way to reply to everyone without the Bother of sending individual replies. They haven't been rude.

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/08/2020 13:32

Actually you can't! This happened to me the other day as the seller though.
I hit mark as sold, then went to respond and say 'sorry it's sold' but FB automatically removes the message

This is true. Once you mark as sold your conversations about the item disappear. So she would have had to remember your name, look you up then message you.

And to the poster who said ‘yuck’, what the fuck is wrong with a second hand fridge freezer? They can be cleaned! And I don’t imagine there are many people who keep body parts in there, it’s usually just food.
