To think they'd already sold it?

Long story short, my freezer is dying a slow death. It may last another month, but I can't take the risk. As the fridge, while still OK, is the same age, I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone as it were and replace both.
Saw a small fridge/freezer on FB marketplace that had only just gone up. I messaged asking if it was still available and saying that, if it was, I could collect at their convenience.
When I've gone on messenger, they've seen the message. Then underneath my message it says "X sold fridge freezer".
As they haven't responded, should I assume that I just wasn't quick enough or should I just wait and see if they respond tomorrow before looking again?

Very also do interest free credit OP, no requirement to be working full time as far as I know.

Hope you get sorted.

Bettysprocker · 14/08/2020 00:13

Have you looked at the white goods schemes energy companies run? They give grants to those on low incomes. I had a friend who got a cooker free.

needaMNnamegenerator · 14/08/2020 00:15

Oh just fuck off, those of you who are turning up your noses at second hand fridges and encouraging the OP to get in debt.

You have no fucking clue.

I can't remember the last time I bought a fridge new. Hmm, let me see.

The oldest fridge I can remember buying was a Smeg for £123. That was about 13 years ago. No idea how long it lasted - but I had it 3 years.

Since moving, 10 years ago, I've had 2 fridges I think. I can't have spent more than £100 on either of them, probably more like £80.

They're much bigger and better than I could afford new.

I got a range cooker of eBay for £155. It needs replacing now, but I've had it 7 years. Not bad for £155! No way could I have afforded it new.

Buying stuff new does save money long term I'd imagine, but it's a luxury for those who can afford it. Those of us who are skint often buy second hand for quality. I'd much rather have quality and "preloved" than brand spanking new and cheap.

needaMNnamegenerator · 14/08/2020 00:15

@Toomuchtrouble4me

2nd hand fridge freezer - yuck - find another way with x months free credit or something.
OFDOD.

How the other half live, eh?

Koelner · 14/08/2020 00:16

@ExhaustedFlamingo We have nothing like that nearby anymore. There used to be but they closed a number of years ago.
@Toomuchtrouble4me As said, I can't get credit as I'm not able to work. If I was getting PIP, I could, but I'm still waiting for an assessment for it.

OP posts:
needaMNnamegenerator · 14/08/2020 00:16

Or ODFOD even Grin

So irritated with this nonsense, I can't even swear properly!

Lockheart · 14/08/2020 00:23

@needaMNnamegenerator I live in a houseshare. Everything I have in the kitchen is second hand. Fridge, freezer, oven, microwave, washing machine.. Nothing wrong with second hand and I'm not "turning my nose up" at anything.

But if OP a) needs a new fridge freezer imminently and doesn't have the luxury of waiting or being choosy because a freezer is essential to her and b) can afford to buy new in 4 months time then surely the answer is to buy a new one on short term credit if you can rather than pray that something suitable turns up on social media and that she gets it.

Koelner · 14/08/2020 00:24

@needaMNnamegenerator Both work. You could have a new anagram Grin

@Lockheart Once more: I cannot get credit as I am unable to work. Therefore, saying "just get one on credit" is not a solution.

OP my sister's a fan of 'Trashnothing.com'. I'm not sure what areas they cover but maybe worth a look?

TenThousandSpoons · 14/08/2020 00:33

Try Freecycle or a local Facebook freecycle type page? People often give away fridges abs especially freezers on my local one - people who are getting built in appliances in new kitchens give away their perfectly fine old ones.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 14/08/2020 00:35
Hmm

Yes OP, we know that now. We did not know that when I and the other poster first suggested it.

Sweettea1 · 14/08/2020 01:09

So buy new £200 buy 2nd hand £60 big difference to people who don't have much money op doesn't want to get in debt for something can save for so if buying 2nd now it will do till she has saved up!!!!!

NigellaAwesome · 14/08/2020 01:16

I'm pretty sure that a lot of stuff in marketplace is just money laundering. You put a (fictitious) item for sale, immediately sell it, and the money is legit.

I wouldn't put too much headspace into it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/08/2020 01:26

Have you tried looking for a local charity that refurbs and checks items before selling on?
I looked at a spin drier earlier in the year; they'd sold the one I was keen on before I got there, but a good source to keep your eye on.

Koelner · 14/08/2020 11:08

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I've had another look today (and in the places suggested). There currently isn't anything that's nearby and affordable. I'm going to keep looking over the month and hope the slowly dying freezer lasts long enough. It's managed 30 years, I'll keep my fingers crossed for a bit longer or that I was wrong about it slowly dying and I can just buy brand new end of the year/start of next year.

SingleHandSue · 14/08/2020 11:16

Near us is a company that rent white goods for a small cost each month. We rent our washing machine for £12 a month. No credit checks needed.

Could something like that work for you while you save for a new one?

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 14/08/2020 11:47
@gamerchick I'm not putting a 30 year old freezer on marketplace. Neither am I putting a 30 year old fridge on marketplace. Even if I did, with my current budget, and what I might be able to sell them for (basically, I'd probably have to pay someone to buy them), I still couldn't afford to buy new. Not everyone is in that lucky position.
It's actually cheaper to buy a new one, as they are more electricity efficient now so you will save in the long run.... I recently got rid of a 20 yo fridge and bought a new one and reduced electricity cost means it will have paid for itself in 18 months.

*I realise this means you need to find the money to buy it now....

AnotherEnigma · 14/08/2020 11:55

I think gamerchick is making the point that you could be buying a pig in a poke,

Koelner · 14/08/2020 11:55

@Bakeachocolatecaketoday There is no way, unless I got 4/5 numbers on the lottery (and I'm not potentially wasting money on a ticket "just in case") that I can get the money for new this month or next month. To buy new from this one I have to hope that the current freezer isn't dying or won't completely let go in the next 4 months. I can't work so have no way of getting any extra money from anywhere.

OP posts:
LuluBellaBlue · 14/08/2020 12:01
@BluebellForest836 that's what I suspected. It would have been nice for them to message and apologise, but I can understand them not, given how some people react. I just hate uncertainty.
Will look again in the morning and hope to find something affordable.
Actually you can't! This happened to me the other day as the seller though.
I hit mark as sold, then went to respond and say 'sorry it's sold' but FB automatically removes the message.

Koelner · 14/08/2020 12:01

@AnotherEnigma so, what would you have me do? Lie to get credit? Hope and pray the current freezer that is dying lasts the 4 months until I can afford new? It's all well and good saying it "could be a pig in a poke" but none of you saying this have had a viable option for me that doesn't involve getting into debt.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 14/08/2020 12:04

I’d assume it’s sold also and agree a bit of courtesy goes a long way but I think expecting the seller to apologise to you for selling it is a bit much.

Fingers crossed though you find another soon.

theemmadilemma · 14/08/2020 12:04

@Koelner I had something I'd forgotten to mark as sold, and a message prompted me. I was polite and apologised to the person who messaged me, then marked it sold. Just polite and nice!
