I'm not ashamed to say I LOVE bows Grin
They do make a dent/can be a suffocation risk so I have only used them for photos really thus far - I love the look, it's a style preference/I'm not snobby enough to not want to be a "chav" 🤷‍♀️

Now dd is nearly 1 she will wear one when I'm dressing us both up nicely for about half an hour once a week. It's not hurting her and I like it.

fluffyblanketlady · 13/08/2020 16:48

I have to say I almost considered adding a giant bow to my baby's bald head when by 9th months she was only ever told what a lovely boy she was. I didn't want her to be a boy. I was happy with my girl and wanted her to be acknowledged as one.

To me she was the most beautiful girl on the planet and it was insulting to insinuate otherwise. IRL she was actually looking more like mr potato head (since confirmed on viewing photographs with less post partum rose tinted glasses Grin)

I didn't actually put a massive bow on her head. Thank goodness as she'd have simply looked like mr potato head with a bow on,

PablosHoney · 13/08/2020 16:50

@fluffyblanketlady 😂🙌🏻

CrispsAddict · 13/08/2020 16:52

I think they're cute. I have a few, they're made of soft stretchy fabric so no different to a hat really. We use them just for fun, like when we're taking photos.
DD also has clothes from the boys section (hand me downs) and most of her things are unisex, apart from the bows and a few dresses.
Only on MN would something so innocuous provoke so much hate. Some people sure take life really seriously.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/08/2020 16:53

I really strongly hate them for the gender stereotyping reasons, and the idea that bald baby girls somehow need something to make them "prettier". You might as well put lipstick on her afaiac.

I once started a thread having a go at HQ for using a picture of a baby in a headband as one of the images on the site. I got absolutely flamed to hell Grin. One of my more memorable threads.

thepeopleversuswork · 13/08/2020 16:56

@IlanaWexler

You're forcing a horrible bit of gender stereotyping on a brand new baby

So you never once dressed your daughter in something pink, floral, or a dress? This is no different.

It is different though: its pure adornment without any functional dimension whatsoever. A dress is functional. The style, colour and shape of the dress is gendered, but it at least performs a function.

This is an exercise in putting something on a baby which has no use whatsoever except to say "LOOK AT MY PRETTY GIRL".

If girls decide, age 5 or whatever, to be a pretty girl, all power to them. Doing it when the baby is barely sentient is nauseating.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 13/08/2020 17:08

Tbh, I wouldn’t put a dress on a baby girl either. They’re just completely impractical on an infant. And probably not that comfortable for them either.

I mostly prioritise practicality (and prefer plainer clothes/simpler more graphic patterns - I’m not keen on stuff with writing all over it, or anything like that) in dressing my children. It can be very hard to find things I like in shops though, so it appears most people would prefer a tshirt with a pattern, picture and writing on it (as the shops are full of that).

CrimeCantCrackItself · 13/08/2020 17:15

I love bows Grin and frilly dresses with frilly socks and bonnet type things. I had a boy, probably thankfully.

But my DM used to sellotape bows to my head when I was a baby so I am perhaps indoctrinated 🎀Grin

sorryforswearing · 13/08/2020 17:22

Never realised so many people disliked them. Thought it was just me.

Pobblebonk · 13/08/2020 17:23

If people use them because they're cute etc, presumably they also want their baby boys to look cute. Can they explain why they don't put them on boys?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/08/2020 17:44

I'm just amazed at the number of people who don't seem to understand how babies and hair works.

From the age of about 40 (sometimes younger, especially if shaven by choice), if you see a person with a bald head, the overwhelming likelihood is that that person is male.

With babies, on the other hand, some of them are bald, some have some hair and some have lots of hair - but it's in no way connected to the baby's sex. If you don't understand that simple fact, you might just as well express deep concern about how very short and underweight the baby is compared to other adults.

LivingoffCoffee · 13/08/2020 17:44

@Pobblebonk my 18mo DS is always stealing mine and pulling them on his head. I've got tons of pics with him in mine or DSIL's. He's still pretty bald too, so you'd all probably hate on him too 🤷🏼‍♀️

IlanaWexler · 13/08/2020 17:46

@thepeopleversuswork So only function matters, not appearance? I assume your DC only wore the cheapest and plainest clothes available then, with absolutely no cute images or slogans Hmm

Strokethefurrywall · 13/08/2020 17:50

I put baby baseball caps on my boys. And baby sunglasses.

Cute as fuck as far as I'm concerned.

There’s someone on my Facebook who’s baby is always wearing a bow double the size of her head and she’s always in some huge pink tutu, being pushed in a pink pram.
My eyes burn a bit from looking.
I have a DD who often wears neutral colours and has been mistaken for a boy before!
It’s hard to tell when they’re small but it doesn’t really matter tbh

CrimeCantCrackItself · 13/08/2020 17:53

Gender stereotyping presumably? My DS likes a bow and a bit of glitter for dressing up occasionally, but wouldn't choose to wear one day to day. I wouldn't have put one on him as a baby because they're stereotypically for girls.
Chiwi · 13/08/2020 17:56

I only dress my baby in a formless brown sack. No one should ever get enjoyment out of anything as frivolous as baby clothes, they should be there to be practical only. If you buy clothes because they are pretty or cute you are a gender conforming child abuser Hmm

FilthyforFirth · 13/08/2020 17:58

Kinda glad I'm not having a girl as I know my family would buy her this sort of shit. Two of my neices have worn them and I have quietly judged! I dont like them and think they are completely unecessary.

However, I did have DS in, what I think is cute, pram shoes around 3ish months. So perhaps I am a massive hypocrite!

LynseyLou1982 · 13/08/2020 18:00

I cannot stand the headbands on babies thing. I'm expecting a girl in October and I will not be doing this.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/08/2020 18:10

Call the headbands what they are: choking hazards.

InFiveMins · 13/08/2020 18:14

YANBU, they look ridiculous. Don't know why people do it.

Iverunoutofnames · 13/08/2020 18:15

DD had tons of hair. Everyone thought she was a boy because she wore white babygrows.
I did spend many years trying to get hair clips into her hair so she could see something.
Waste of time, had to hate it cut instead.

Surely if gender is that important, just stick your baby in pink babygros until her hair gets longer?

Mine is 20 months and will tolerate her hair being tied up out of her face and that is IT. Lives in shorts/vest tops or leggings/tops because she’s so active. I don’t give a monkeys whether she looks like a ‘tomboy’ according to Ethel in the village shop, so long as she’s comfy.
