To want to know when we can stop wearing face masks?

That's about the size of it. I loathe the bastarding things for every possible reason. Obviously I have to wear them because I don't have a reason not to (I could perfectly easily pretend, in order to obtain exemption, though this would seem unfair on the people who genuinely can't wear them). But AIBU to want to know when we will be allowed to stop with this nonsense? Does the R rate have to reach a certain target? Does there have to be a vaccination? WTF will make a difference? Why has nobody given us any indication?

Amazing how the people not wanting to wear face masks appear to be perfectly content wearing a tinfoil hat.....

Tumbleweed101 · 13/08/2020 05:30

Yes, would be much easier getting on and wearing them if there was at least a review date. I certainly hope this isn’t forever! I would be happy for it to be reduced to wearing them if you have signs of illness like they do in some countries but I don’t like the idea of them being mandatory indefinitely.

Personally I dislike wearing them and have reduced going out again - just as I’d starting going out a bit more but I am wearing them properly when I have to. I’m suspecting it’ll be next spring at earliest though after they’ve seen if the rates rise during the winter months this year.

I think my issue is with the disposable.ones - they make me sweat profusely especially in this heat and l just want to get out of the shop as quickly as l can. Cotton ones l can live with although find it weird if l smile at people and they don't smile back - then l remember they probably can't see.

Reading so many of these replies makes me despair for Brexit.

We really aren't a smart nation, are we?

We can stop wearing masks when this pandemic is over.

Petulantly demanding to know why 'no one' has informed us when that will be is infantile.

I don't care about wearing one as I have to do all day at work.

wanderings · 13/08/2020 07:10

I assume measures will be relaxed when the numbers of dead go down.
They went down by 4000 yesterday. Smile

@HeIenaDove

It is policing for wrongthink to tell someone that they must like something when they dont EVEN when they ARE complying which we are.

Wrongthink is not just a term that only applies to trans issues you know.

This is also an often-repeated trope of the ADs. I don't recall anyone ever saying that people must not only wear masks, but enjoy it too. Not on this thread or any thread. No-one enjoys wearing masks. We wear them because we have to, not because we like the experience. It's a weak argument to continue suggesting otherwise.
LynetteScavo · 13/08/2020 08:15

I occasionally struggle wearing a mask, especially if it's hot. I find supermarkets which have air conditioning OK, but have had to leave smaller shops as I was too uncomfortable.

No one knows when they will no longer be mandatory (I'd guess until at least next spring) but I think I might continue to wear one for the rest of my life on public transport and supermarkets.

I've always thought trolly handles were filthy and people got too close in queues. I'm quite liking these new "extreme" measures.

SockYarn · 13/08/2020 08:19

Why has reading comprehension gone down the pan with Covid?

Saying you hate masks, calling them "bastarding things" and wondering when it will all be over is NOT the same as being a mask refuser.

I am with you OP, I hate masks with every fibre of my being, they are really awful. It's definitely limiting where I'm going and what I'm doing - local museum has just opened up to book slots, we're not going as the pleasure of a mooch round the museum is cancelled by the mask-wearing.

It's OK to moan about it.

userxx · 13/08/2020 08:20

I'm with you op, I despise the things.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/08/2020 08:24

Yet mysteriously right from the start of this thread people have been berated for the audacity to complain about wearing masks. These are not people refusing without legitimate reason; they wear them as the state requests.

That therefore insinuates that not only should we wear masks in indoor spaces, but we must at the very least do it with patient, good grace. Probably no point in a sanguine smile as no one would see it, but a giant grin might put the twinkle in the eyess so the mask enthusiasts know that mask-wearing is being done with the right level of grace.

scotsllb · 13/08/2020 08:24

I have to wear one 8 hours a day in a hot environment and it's brutal. Sometimes I feel like I'm gasping for breath.
They never fit right and move up towards my eyes when I'm running around and it's quite dangerous.
I despise them. I had a face shield but we were told masks are the law now and we cannot wear a face shield anymore

Shehz21 · 13/08/2020 08:35

I'm with you OP. YANBU.
And I am hardly going out ever since the bastard thing was made mandatory. No saving the economy from my family, friends, colleagues until this bloody thing isn't scrapped off. Ruins any kind of experience from shopping to a wander in the museum or to the movies.

slashlover · 13/08/2020 08:45

But if he still says he doesnt like them despite the fact he HAS eaten them you still punish him right.

No but you tell him to stop whining.

**

Hmm
userxx · 13/08/2020 08:45

@Shehz21 Yeah, I'm not bothering these days either - I see to be spending a lot of my time in bars and restaurants where are more normal. Might try for an online delivery at some point.

listsandbudgets · 13/08/2020 08:51

I don't like wearing them but I also don't mind doing so. Its not a torture device.

Since we have to cover our faces we are investing in a range of bananas, and fabric masks to suit all occasions. Our local mask makers are already advertising their Christmas range!

Get used to it and embrace the fun to be had with them OP.

listsandbudgets · 13/08/2020 08:51

Bandanas not bananas

Spidey66 · 13/08/2020 08:53

I think the OP is getting a lot of stick here, her views are like mine. I hate them, I struggle to breathe in them and the warm weather makes it worse. I use them because I'm compelled to in shops and public transport, but i must admit I walk and cycle a lot just to avoid using them.

I acknowledge that given the choice of wearing a mask v. a second wave and more lockdowns I'd choose the mask but I hate the whole sanctimonious views of people who have their profile pictures on FB of them in a mask wearing them 24/7. I'm complying, that's all.

MN is literally the only place where people claim not to mind masks. Its really odd. Everyone I know in IRL thinks they're a PITA, even if they also think they're necessary. There's a weird kind of Covid sadomasochism on here which I will never understand. Its not as if a fairy dies every time someone says "I don't like masks"
Wannabangbang · 13/08/2020 08:56

I personally hate them but they serve a big purpose and unfortunately if we want life anywhere near normal you will have to face facts they will be part of every day life for the forceeble future and good job considering how busy everywhere is already. Although i hate wearing them i feel safer knowing most people are wearing one including myself. You will get used to it

userxx · 13/08/2020 08:56

Bandanas not bananas

🤣 now that would be more interesting.

zingally · 13/08/2020 09:00

I don't see compulsory mask wearing coming to an end any time soon... I'll be surprised if it happens any time this side of Christmas.

SarahBellam · 13/08/2020 09:16

I have never heard such big baby overblown moaning nonsense about what is effectively a minor inconvenience that might well help reduce the spread of a disease. What the fuck is wrong with you people? Such exceptionalist rubbish. We can stop wearing the masks when we get the disease under control. This is not rocket science. Just suck it up and get on with it.

TheClaws · 13/08/2020 09:26

That's drawing a very long bow BOGOF Grin

Malteserdiet · 13/08/2020 09:26

The disease IS under control though!!! In the last 7 weeks flu and pneumonia has killed around 4000 more people than covid. There are routinely less than 1000 cases per day despite crowded beaches, people travelling for UK holidays or “illegal” larger gatherings in a population of 66 million people. I’d call that pretty under control! The flu/pneumonia figures demonstrate that a transmissible virus can never be eradicated despite all of the measures currently in place to avoid any kind of virus transmission so what exactly are we aiming for? It’s past time to get back to normal life and for Covid to become one of the many cold and flu bugs we have existed with for thousands of years without all of this hysteria.
