To want to know when we can stop wearing face masks?

That's about the size of it. I loathe the bastarding things for every possible reason. Obviously I have to wear them because I don't have a reason not to (I could perfectly easily pretend, in order to obtain exemption, though this would seem unfair on the people who genuinely can't wear them). But AIBU to want to know when we will be allowed to stop with this nonsense? Does the R rate have to reach a certain target? Does there have to be a vaccination? WTF will make a difference? Why has nobody given us any indication?

How could any of us possibly know?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

babydisney · 13/08/2020 00:51

I think sadly its going to be the new normal, for public transports and shops, everything else I think will gradually normalise, but this will be the new normal. I am exempt but I still try my best to wear them for as long as possible and step outside of shops for "breathers" if I need to mainly because although I am exempt I'm also vulnerable and don't want to make my health any worse.

babydisney · 13/08/2020 00:55

I suffer from hypoxemia due to being a severe asthmatic and also have ptsd due to an incident of imposed claustrophobia so not great for myself as obviously I often struggle to breathe normally even without a mask.

MrsNoah2020 · 13/08/2020 00:58

It was 35 degrees in work today. 2 poxy fans, no AC and we had to wear full PPE. Fuck off with whinging about wearing a mask to the shops.

@babydisney - my last post wasn't aimed at you or anyone else with illnesses that make masks difficult - but at the OP
babydisney · 13/08/2020 01:00

@mrsnoah2020 agree with wearing face masks but you chose your job, not really a great argument 🙃

babydisney · 13/08/2020 01:02

@mrsnoah2020 it's OK, the amount of people I've had not understand I can't breathe normally 🤣 I work for health service but have had reasonable adjustments where they can

spudlike1 · 13/08/2020 01:03

There is so much hardship and suffering in the world wearing a mask is neither

I've bought myself a lovely one in a beautiful fabric hand stiched by a local lady , its not difficult wearing it , we have a duty to each other not to pass this virus round .

mathanxiety · 13/08/2020 01:05

Bored of masks? Ffs I think we are at peak intelligence level sometimes and it’s frightening.

@Redhair23, best comment on the thread.

SO true.

vake · 13/08/2020 01:09

I would love to know aswell! I can already see less people in shops wearing them than a week ago, I think most people will give up before the government says.

Notarealmum · 13/08/2020 01:10

I quite like them. They cover my saggy jowls and I’m saving a fortune on lipstick 😷

Well no one became an HCP knowing there would be Covid so that's a bit daft. We don't usually have to wear this level of PPE all day, even in most operating theatres.

And you'd be a bit screwed if we all decided we'd had enough. It is absolutely fucking boiling at work. Everyone- even staff who are pregnant or who have health issues - is bathed in sweat but still trying to carry on. And the OP is upset because she can't enjoy the shops. My heart bleeds.

fsklgf · 13/08/2020 01:37

"Thought policing", lol. It's not "thought policing" to tell people to stop whining about tiny inconveniences. I say it to my 3-year-old on a daily basis.

HeIenaDove · 13/08/2020 01:59

It is policing for wrongthink to tell someone that they must like something when they dont EVEN when they ARE complying which we are.

Wrongthink is not just a term that only applies to trans issues you know.

fsklgf · 13/08/2020 02:02

What are you going on about? The only person who has used the term wrongthink in this thread is you!

I repeat, it is not thought police to tell people to stop whining.

HeIenaDove · 13/08/2020 02:02

So your 3 year old doesnt like his veg but you make him eat them because they are good for him right?

But if he still says he doesnt like them despite the fact he HAS eaten them you still punish him right.
Following this principle through to its logical conclusion!!

How many whinge threads do we need about this? I'm not able to socially distance in my job and am just having to get on with it. Wearing a mask to go to the shops is hardly a massive hardship!

80sMum · 13/08/2020 02:30

I have a feeling that the wearing of face coverings will be with us for a very considerable time.

We've all grown accustomed to the need for the prevention of transmission of disease. Even if Covid 19 eventually peters out, or an effective vaccine is found, I can forsee that people may remain very sensitive to other people coughing and sneezing near them - and the wearing of a mask by anyone who is suffering from a cold, cough or other respiratory illness could become the expected norm.

It may not be such a bad thing. I've often had to sit next to complete strangers in the theatre, for example, who were coughing all over me. Not a pleasant experience. At least a mask would help to some extent.

Or possibly, in the future people who are ill with an infectious disease will be encouraged simply to avoid pubs, theatres, gyms etc.

Bananabread8 · 13/08/2020 02:35

What sort of indication would you like OP? The government don’t know! In fact they don’t seem to have a bloody clue. We need to get through winter yet so mask up..

RabbityMcRabbit · 13/08/2020 03:32

I would imagine they haven't told us because they don't yet know. There is so much they do not know about the virus, so at this point I think it is impossible to say how long we will have to wear them. At least you're not a health professional having to wear them for a 12-hour shift Hmm

Becuna · 13/08/2020 04:02

@GreenGordon

I’m with you OP. There’s no information about what conditions would mean that stopping wearing them is indicated. It’s a Trojan horse for the government decreeing all sorts of behaviour and getting busybodies to police it for them. There’s still no real scientific basis for any of the measures that have been brought in on a knee-jerk basis.

I have not worn one yet. I have not been inside anywhere where I am required to. I have no intention of going anywhere I am required to. Not been a problem for me so far.

My goodness, you have not been anywhere inside that requires a mask but you are stating some very strong views. Have you looked at the science of wearing a face cover? It stops a huge amount of spittle leaving a persons mouth. If that person has Covid and coughs or even talks then the virus is much less likely to be spread around. My mask protects you, your mask protects me.
