To want to know when we can stop wearing face masks?

ihatefacemasks · 12/08/2020 21:30

That's about the size of it. I loathe the bastarding things for every possible reason. Obviously I have to wear them because I don't have a reason not to (I could perfectly easily pretend, in order to obtain exemption, though this would seem unfair on the people who genuinely can't wear them). But AIBU to want to know when we will be allowed to stop with this nonsense? Does the R rate have to reach a certain target? Does there have to be a vaccination? WTF will make a difference? Why has nobody given us any indication?

God, some people on here are rude. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask that there be indicators in place to determine when we can smile at others in the supermarket again. I understand they can’t give a date, but surely they should be able to say - when deaths are at x, hospitalisations at y and infections at z for a certain time period. It shouldn’t be difficult to do that, it’s not rocket science.

Daph73 · 22/08/2020 04:03

The OP is a selfish bugger.

CatWithNoName · 22/08/2020 04:10

I wouldn't try to put a time on it, it's just something the majority of us have to do.

Find the most comfortable one for you, you'll forget soon enough that you're wearing one. It'll become second nature.

skeptile · 22/08/2020 04:18

We've been told in Melbourne 2 years. But then again, we've also got drones policing our city fitted out with mask detection AI.

I guess they've got to get their money's worth.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 22/08/2020 04:49

Until there is a vaccine and it has been successfully rolled out

So sometime yet

Cotton ones are far more comfortable than surgical ones and the ones I have bought online fit well

annabell22 · 22/08/2020 05:02

I live in the middle east. We've been wearing masks outside the home at all times since March. School starts next week and all pupils y2 and up have to wear a mask all day. I can't envisage this changing before next year. The fine for non-compliance is around £650.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 22/08/2020 05:26

I am reminded of when I used to travel with my DS when he was very small ' Are we there yet?". Usually 5 mins after we has left

Ha ha. I was saying to my partner today that I feel many adults have turned into whinging toddlers or teenagers that moan and find a problem with everything since lockdown. But actually, the kids and teens I know are just making the best of it on the whole, a lot of adults on the other hand really need to grow up. The moaning and whining is just too much and I’ve seen lots of people in a very different light.

Have a look at that link and then make a guess.

@Diceroll

What masks are people wearing where they ride up into their eyes?
Just normal surgical masks. They are supposed to be 'one size fits all' but actually they are 'one size fits 80% of people and screw the others'. If the measurement between the middle of your nose and the bottom of your chin is smaller than average then an average surgical mask will be too big and yes, it will ride up and poke you in the eyes. I'm sure there are other reasons why they ride up too. Your face measurement is not necessarily related to your dress size.

One solution is to fold over the top of the mask where the nose piece is and stick it down to the body of the mask with micropore or similar tape. This shortens the length of the mask but depending how thick it is it may not fit so closely on the nose/cheeks. And ideally you need to do this at home with clean hands. My hairdresser insists that I wear one of her masks so I have to take the tape with me. In fact I don't leave home without it!

Other people get a better fit by twisting the elastic ear loops.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 23/08/2020 17:47

These posts baffles me
Like it’s the Governments fault that the the whole fucking WORLD have this pandemic and are wearing masks

Ilovegreentomatoes · 23/08/2020 17:49

Mine always move upwards within 5 mins and start covering my eyes! They are crap to wear but to avoid the nasty comments and hostile glances I always wear one in shops and buses.I do not believe they are as effective as everyone thinks but it gives some ppl a false sense of security.

Thomasina79 · 23/08/2020 21:52

Nothing new under the sun. They were worn during the Spanish flu epidemic, there was an opinion that the wearing of them might protect the men at the front (by limiting the spread). Remember 50 million people died of this disease. Wearing of masks tailed off after the war, but a second spike as we would say, forced the wearing of them again. Not sure when people stopped wearing them, but there are plenty of pictures around showing with them on. The arguments people gave both fore and against are pretty similar to now!

Skysblue · 23/08/2020 22:34

When there is an effective vaccine.

If the mask is bothering you do try a different one - I have, the thick cotton one makes me feel suffocated but the muslin one is fine.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/10/2020 10:55

Never.

More likely that we will have to wear them everywhere when outside the home.

Depressing times.

ANoTail · 10/10/2020 12:35

It might be selfish not to wear a mask (unless you are medically exempt), but it's in no way selfish to dislike wearing a mask. It's fairly reasonable to want answers as to how long we are expected to wear them. It's pointless saying "When no one else is dying of Covid" when people still die of other communicable diseases. Someone dying of Covid 19 is no more tragic than someone dying of Pneumonia.

Beaverdam100 · 10/10/2020 23:32

I agree. Cant stand them. Those that are vulnerable should isolate and leave us get on with our lives.

TinyTornado · 11/10/2020 00:10

The law will be subject to review after 6 months and expires after a year. So officially you won’t have to after 23 July 2021 -
No guarantees that they won’t just make it the law again though.
The review expiry is section 9

You seem to have a fantasy of who is 'vulnerable'. Half the fecking NHS would need to isolate in your scenario. Who would drive the buses, run the trains, keep the food arriving in the supermarkets, if all these vulnerable people just isolated?
toconclude · 11/10/2020 00:21

You can want to know. But it's not reasonable to expect to know now. We are not near enough that point to say.

YABtotallyU to call it "nonsense"

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 11/10/2020 00:24

I get it op. I'm finding masks harder to get used to than any other part of the COVID experience. And I'm saying that as someone someone who was shielding for 3 months .

I wear them at work pretty much all day every day, as well as in the shops etc. They make my face scratchy my skin looks terrible. I have trouble with special awareness anyway without one. Going down stairs is a nightmare. I struggle to breath with them. I just hate wearing them.

I've sort of accepted them as a necessary evil, and I've got lots of pretty looking ones to cheer myself and those around me up

Crosswithlifeatm · 11/10/2020 00:26

April!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 11/10/2020 00:29

SARScov2 and I just had a chat and have decided no masks after next Tuesday week.

It’s just going to go away like a miracle.

lotsagossip · 11/10/2020 00:44

Numerous scientists / epidemiologists have spoken out over face masks not being effective. We was also told this at the begging of the pandemic! If they worked we should also be seeing lower cases of the flu but guess what... that isn’t happening and Covid cases are still rising!

Despite all of this the masks are here to stay! 😷

yawnsvillex · 11/10/2020 00:48

Ever since we've been wearing masks cases have gone up

MJMG2015 · 11/10/2020 00:57

Alex, not enough current CV threads for you, you have to dredge up old ones?

@yawnsvillex. Yep same as there are now more car accidents and deaths since wearing seat belts was made compulsory.
