i know it's a 1st world thing but i totally hate it,it's so hard to keep cool, sleep, have any energy it's making me feel murderous. Angry
then i read about the floods in wales and know i'm vu, it's so extreme on both accounts, the heat will settle but those peeps will have their lives turned upside down for possibly months.
shut up romeo and get on with it, rant over Smile

Its the humidity that makes it horrible, more than the heat. I love the heat so much I emigrated to Oz, but I did not enjoy anything over 30 in London. Whereas I love 40 degrees here! Also, UK houses need to get aircon.

RobotRepair · 12/08/2020 04:53

I hate it with a passion. I have dysautonomia which makes it impossible to regular my thermostat. I only have to walk a few steps or nave a warm drink or do the slightest thing and I pour with sweat, feel Weak and sick. Once the outside temp is above 20 I’m a wreck. Same with cold. Under about 10 degrees I feel sick from the cold and my nails go blue. Most weather is wrong for me in one way or another but this is the most unpleasant. I’m embarrassingly drenched from the top of my head downwards.

PhoneLock · 12/08/2020 09:13

Whereas I love 40 degrees here! Also, UK houses need to get aircon.

UK houses getting aircon will only exacerbate the problem. It also seems overkill for a week of warm weather a year. It doesn't even happen every year. It is possible to build houses that keep cool passively. Our house is cool. It stayed 10 degrees cooler than the 34 degree outside temperature yesterday. I'm writing this while still in bed under a duvet (or doona, if you prefer).

Australia is often used as a benchmark in these threads. People seem to forget that Australia is a huge country. Not everywhere is hot and not everywhere is hot all the time. Some places are hideously humid, other are dry.

We spend part of every year in Oz and we and the people we know run the aircon as little as possible even in summer because of the cost. Some houses don't even have it fitted.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 12/08/2020 10:39

Well I agree about Aussie houses being cool, I hardly ever need to put the aircon on in my house because the house was built to stay cool naturally. But I was under the impression from this board that UK summers had got much hotter and longer in the last few years, so bearing in mind the houses are built to keep heat in, I would have thought aircon was a necessity. There’s always a lot of complaining about the heat on here, if it’s only the odd week of heat every year or so then I don’t understand the problem!
And of course Australia isn”t not all the time. It’s winter and bloody freezing now!

SerenDippitty · 12/08/2020 10:42

Hate it when I start to feel sweaty almost immediately I’ve dried myself after showering!

MarshaBradyo · 12/08/2020 10:46

I think aircon in UK houses is overkill. Our house is fine as the walls are thick, the new attic conversion traps heat more but has lots of airflow.

In a flat might be a different story,

chargeorge · 12/08/2020 10:52

oh goodness people, its only for a couple of weeks, get over it and if you're on your own or close family then get undressed and enjoy the nudist life together

You’re welcome to my 33 degree heat flat with no air, fans just blowing hot air around, very little sleep, no way of getting a breeze in

It does actually make some people feel physically unwell you know. You might like to tell my DC who lives in a top floor flat in London with no outside space and a room that was 33 ° at 111pm to 'get over it'.
CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 12/08/2020 23:39

Detest it.

34 degrees here today. Last week it was 12 degrees and pissing down. Very fucked up weather 😐

atvh · 13/08/2020 06:43

It’s miserable. I’ve woken up to grey skies here in London though, so am hoping for rain and storms soon.

Wannabegreenfingers · 13/08/2020 07:07

Minority as well. Love the heat and don't really struggle to sleep. Cool shower before bed and wear nothing, works all the time.

Tuesday I did 7 loads of washing and got them all dried on the line - can't do that when it's cooler.

I'm a sweaty mess, but would swap our miserable wet weather for this any day. Hot and dry or cold and dry are my only go to temperatures (fully aware we need rain, if it could manged that at night, perfect!!)

I'm with you.

Working on a boiling hot hospital ward.
Apron mask face shield gloves

Not allowed a fan
Not allowed air con

It's too much in this heat

Vivalasjohnnyvegas · 13/08/2020 08:47

I hate it too which is bizarre because I used to live in Spain, Greece and 2 other tropical countries.

The problem is that the UK is not geared up for or has the infrastructure for hot weather. Anything over 26 is a bit of a nightmare. If I was in my previous 2 countries I would have the appropriate clothing to wear i.e. I'd wear linen and cotton, dresses, shorts and flip-flops all the time, I'd have air con or a fan in every room, I'd have access to loads of pools whether public or in my apartment block. I'd also be eating differently as in lighter and loads of fluids. There would be beaches with facilities to support them.

It's the same with snow. I'd love to live somewhere where it snows every year and the infrastructure is set up to deal with it.

The heat in the UK is unbearable. It is not that we Brits are lightweights. It is that we are not set up for hot summers. I think moving forward we all need to change our houses round. I live in the SE and I haven't seen rain for weeks. It is really dry here.

Vivalasjohnnyvegas · 13/08/2020 08:56

Last week we sat down and looked at the weather and tried to plan indoor activities as it said Tues-Fri was full on rain and thunder and lightning. It is now Thurs and we have not had a drop. Looked on the weather now and it says no rain today either. Looking out the window its dark, like dusk, there is not a leaf blowing and it is deadly still with grey clouds. It's like a smog. This reminds me of when I lived in Singapore and we had smog covering the whole island from Indonesian fires.

My dog is so miserable.

timeforawine · 13/08/2020 09:00

I love it in the day but hate not being able to sleep. Another thing i'm hating right now are those bloody tiny black bugs, thunderbugs? Had so many of them landing on me making me itch, ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Puts paid to me sitting outside Angry

PhoneLock · 13/08/2020 10:40

It's cold and wet here today.

I know we only get weather like this for 50 weeks of the year, but I hate it!

Neron · 13/08/2020 10:53

It's meant to be raining in my part of the SE.
It's not raining, in fact it's hazy blue skies and muggy.

PhoneLock · 13/08/2020 11:14

It's actually hailing now!

Goyle · 13/08/2020 11:22

Our flat was built in the early 00s, so well insulated.
In Winter, we are lucky that we rarely have to put the heater on. A jumper is all that is needed.
In Summer, we live in an supremely uncomfortable oven. Even with the windows open.
We spend more on electricity on fans than radiators.
I have to change the bed daily because we sweat so much. The washer is constantly on.
It's not raining in my area yet. But I hope this fucking weather is over soon.
We are drinking so much water, sweating like pigs, taking twice daily tepid showers (sweating ten minutes after leaving the bathroom) and the cat has literally melted.
Fuck this. I am done.

Carowiththegoodhair · 13/08/2020 11:32

I was so hot yesterday I couldn’t actually function.

Tempted to buy one of these portable air con units for the summer, which seems a good compromise and less excessive than getting it installed into the house.

The British weather was one of my top 3 reasons for moving to Australia a few years ago.
I know that sounds far fetched and somewhat over dramatic, but I really am so so affected by the weather. It’s an annoying trait and I wish it wasn’t this way, but ever since I can remember my moods have been so much based on the weather.

I just found I was never really content with the British climate. I always liked the idea of autumn and winter. The stereotypical aesthetic picture of the seasons is nice, but in the UK it tends to just be grey, drizzly, damp and grim. Admittedly we’d have some lovely autumnal days in September October sometimes. And I absolutely lived for the crisp sunny cold winter days but I found they were few and far between.
Summers I rarely enjoyed in adulthood, once I got to the age where you actually have to operate and function in the heat and not spend all day in and out of the paddling pool. I loved the warm days, late teens early 20s. But anything over 25ish was usually so humid and smoggy and suffocating. I used to commute into London and would be utterly miserable throughout the summer !
So no I definitely do not think YABU. there’s a reason Brits are so famed for our shocking weather. There’s a lot I miss about home but the weather certainly is not one of them!

dalecooper · 13/08/2020 11:45

It is awful. I only live a few short miles from the sea on the east coast but it is still dreadful. Last year I bought a really really good fan (not one of those rotating ones that ever so slightly move around the hot air) and then bought another one a few weeks ago so at night we have them in the bedrooms and in the evening we can comfortably sit in the sitting room without being covered in a film of sweat.
My mother keeps saying "they are so expensive to run!" but I don't care. I have them going all night long. It is the only way otherwise I feel nauseous and disgusting all of the time.

Rosebel · 13/08/2020 11:55

Why do people always moan when it gets hot? It's a few weeks a year if that.
My husband and children have been moaning about the heat so I go and sit outside as I love it.
Do feel sorry for my baby though. Had to take him for his injections yesterday (10 minutes walk) and he was actually sweating when we got home.

wolfmom · 13/08/2020 12:01

It make my ME and fibro much worse and my lack of sleep makes my anxiety worse. I could cope better if it was much cooler at night
