To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

It's not suffocating heat in Scotland at the moment. Hmm

It's about 18c and overcast in Glasgow today.

Moonfig · 10/08/2020 11:59

....where would the time be made up?! The schools always return in August. Kids in England are in school in July which is also a warm month. Bizarre.

Education doesn't rely on the weather being bad, the kids have missed enough over the past 6 months.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 12:00

Our school is saying no blazers or ties. Mine are due back starting on Wednesday. I think they've been off long enough tbh

thecartofhelena · 10/08/2020 12:00

there is no heat wave in Scotland just the south of England

Finfintytint · 10/08/2020 12:00

Scotland is not troubled too often with a heat wave.

I'm Irish - I always feel sorry for the poor English kids in school in July!

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 12:00

And its around 20⁰C here

TheAquaticDuchess · 10/08/2020 12:01

But then you would have to push the start of the summer hols back to mid-July, and miss a chunk of the best Scottish weather. July is usually a much better summer month in Scotland than August, so it makes sense to make the most of having the whole thing off.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 10/08/2020 12:01

It's not exactly cracking the flags here.

BarefootHippieChick · 10/08/2020 12:01

In my experience, in England the hottest weather is always may to July, when our kids are still stuck at school. As soon as August and holidays come round it's often cool and rainy.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 12:01

Supposed to be pissing down next week too

NearWildHeaven · 10/08/2020 12:01

silver3 whereabouts in Scotland are you with this suffocating heat?

silver3 · 10/08/2020 12:03

How can it only be 18 in Glasgow when it’s mid 30s here?

Sorry, I had just assumed it myst be about 30 up there.

I'm in Glasgow, I'm cold today 🤣

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 10/08/2020 12:04

Its not roasting hot here and my kids dont have to wear blazers and proper shoes either. Short sleeved shirt and trainers here. My kids are buzzing to go back to school.

blacktop · 10/08/2020 12:04

Common sense prevails and if it's hot they take their blazers off. Shoes? I'm a bit confused why school shoes are an issue. The majority wear converse or vans in our school and they wear them out of school too Confused

Our primary is going back in comfy black joggers/leggings/trousers and polo shirts. High school blazer is polyester but DS takes it off when it's warm. Don't feel sorry for my kids.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/08/2020 12:04

It's 15 here and about to start peeing with rain, I think they'll survive!

I would much rather (if we're mucking about with terms) stop the Easter hols being a moveable feast and have them in May - it's almost always gorgeous then.

JoysOfString · 10/08/2020 12:04

I live in Scotland but grew up in England, and going back to school in August always seems weird to me. However, even if it was really hot, it wouldn't be a problem if schools didn't insist on blazers, which is the most ridiculous thing ever to make a child or teen wear.

Our primary school doesn't bother and just has sweatshirts and polo shirts. Secondary school bleats on about blazers every so often but my DS refuses to wear then and I'd back him up on that if need be. Do they really want kids to be uncomfortable when they're trying to learn? As 90% of the school doesn't wear them, they let it go.

Me too! And then I feel sorry for the Scottish kids in August!
dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 12:04

because there is often at least a 10 degree difference between scotland and England

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/08/2020 12:05

Is the problem not blazers rather than school?

blacktop · 10/08/2020 12:05

AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

Yes of course you ABU. This is a non issue for which we do not need to alter our entire school year Confused

Caplin · 10/08/2020 12:05

Hahahaha!!!

I'm in Edinburgh sitting with socks and a hoodie on. It is only about 17 degrees. We don't get sweltering heat apart from a few days a year.

In fact sometimes I worry about the summer uniform my kid's school insists on until October, as it is so cold!

TheAquaticDuchess · 10/08/2020 12:05

Sorry, I had just assumed it myst be about 30 up there.

Because Glasgow is 400 miles north of London
