To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

@2pinkginsplease

No heatwave here however in Scotland we bring our children up to be tough, we can withstand any weather system that is thrown at us, usually 4 seasons in one day!
Hahaha

Nurseries kids need list
Rainsuit
Wellies
Sun cream
Sun hat
Indoor shoes!

That was July.

I'm pretty sure it rains in Glasgow for 360 days of the year.

amusedbush · 10/08/2020 12:28

Paris is SOUTH of London, so closer to the equator. Clearly geography isn't your strong suit, OP Grin

I'm in Glasgow and I've got my heating on, I'm so cold.

DivGirl · 10/08/2020 12:28

It's roasting up here in Shetland to be fair - 15 degrees! I don't know how they'll cope (no uniforms up here though).

MistressMounthaven · 10/08/2020 12:28

The Thames valley is a microcosm of hot stuffy weather in the summer. Not breezy as you are in a hollow not on hills or by the coast. Loads of heat inducing buildings and traffic engines. East side of the country away from prevailing winds..... suffocating.

@silver3

How can it only be 18 in Glasgow when it’s mid 30s here?

Sorry, I had just assumed it myst be about 30 up there.

I once saw a poster insist that it didn't rain much in the UK as where they were wasn't that wet .

I'm in Wales - at foot of a hill range it can be wet here when thet are dry in rest of the city.

I think end of June/July is hottest time here most years and for most of that the kids are in school - though they don't have blazers and generally the school is reasonable about clothing in hot weather at least jumpers off, short sleves allowed and occasionally shorts are all allowed.

YABU to feel sorry for Scottish children, OP. Rather everyone should feel sorry for you, who appears to have been deprived of any formal education, at any point in the year. 🙄

OnceBitten25 · 10/08/2020 12:29

Sitting here in Edinburgh with my cardi on - don't think I've ever seen it 30c in Scotland. It's only 17c today. Kids back to school with polo shirts and leggings - hoodie if they're cold.

minnieok · 10/08/2020 12:30

@DivGirl

Balmy, it was only 13 when we were there and had to go buy more clothes, being a wimpy southerner. And the wind!!!

sleepyhead · 10/08/2020 12:31

Lol.

speakout · 10/08/2020 12:31

I am is scotland- I have had my heating on this morning.

It's currently 17 degrees- not exactly blistering heat.

EspressoX10 · 10/08/2020 12:32

What an interesting insight into how people form their opinions (and presumably vote accordingly).

silver3 · 10/08/2020 12:32

Plus, this August heatwave trend is quite distinctive and predictable now. Yes May / June / July can be warm (I can count on one hand probably the times its rained since lockdown started) but I have noticed this pattern of August heatwaves over the last decade or so and it’s escalating imo. It’s one thing if you’re by the coast, but it’s very draining in cities. I don’t have the energy to drive unless essential or be walking about on foot.

Anybody else seriously reconsidering a relocation from the south east to Scotland after reading this thread?

YesINameChangeEveryDay · 10/08/2020 12:32

And I can't answer for all of the Scottish school children but I don't know any who regularly wear a blazer (unless at private school). The vast majority that I know also walk to school rather than get public transport.

SugarHockeyIcedTea · 10/08/2020 12:32

Really?!

Don't worry OP, my two kids will be fine up here in rural Scotland where it's blowing a hoolie just now and is so overcast it feels like winter.

Admittedly, we are attached by land mass but the weather is pretty variable!

WeAllHaveWings · 10/08/2020 12:33

Highest temperature where I am this week is forecast for 22 degrees (taps aff if the rain stays aff). Next week it is forecast for 17 degrees (taps oan) most of the week. Guide to this weeks weather here www.taps-aff.co.uk/

Think the kids will be fine in school, they'll wear a jumper in the morning and just leave their jackets at home (and get wet when it rains!). The jumper will be scrunched into a ball, stuck in the bottom of their bags by 9am and forgotten about until they try it on the next morning and it needs ironed in a hurry!

sleepyhead · 10/08/2020 12:33

Do you never look at the UK weather map after the news? I know it would mean raising your eyes a few inches, but really? Never? It's on several times a day.

Never catch a glimpse of UK weather maps in newspapers?

Lumisade · 10/08/2020 12:33

To be fair to the OP, we kind of have had a heat wave near Glasgow this weekend - I used my sunglasses two days in a row!

DeepfriedPizza · 10/08/2020 12:33

In Scotland (West) in summer it’s either taps aff or big coats oan. Yesterday was taps aff even though it was only about 22. Today it’s big coats oan at 18.

Sakura7 · 10/08/2020 12:33

Oh OP, you're only making it worse!

I'm in Ireland, and most of the country tends to have quite similar weather to Scotland. We may be further south but we have those lovely Atlantic weather systems to deal with. July and August are usually pretty crap. While the south of England has been baking, we've had fairly cool temperatures and plenty of rain.

Britian may be a somewhat small island but it's long, which means it covers a broad latitude. There are lots of reasons why its geographic location results in variations of weather.

If you're genuinely interested in this stuff, you should learn about it. At the moment you're just throwing out a load of random assumptions (and yes it's very London/SE centric).

Apolloanddaphne · 10/08/2020 12:33

Oh how I wish we were having a heatwave!

Is there an August heatwave in Scotland though? I find August to be usually raining where I am.

sleepyhead · 10/08/2020 12:34

Honestly op. The August heat is not draining in Scottish cities.
