To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

@silver3

How can it only be 18 in Glasgow when it’s mid 30s here?

Sorry, I had just assumed it myst be about 30 up there.

Oh my.

You do live in a little London bubble don’t you.

cologne4711 · 10/08/2020 12:13

Because Glasgow is 400 miles north of London

Although according to the BBC it's hotter in Inverness today.

Is this time for the "Edinburgh is further west than Cardiff" mind-blowing fact?

How is it any different from English and Welsh children being in school in July I think we could do a lot worse than change the holidays to mirror the Scottish ones - the weather is usually better in July than August. But I know that would not be popular in Scotland as it (normally) gives them the chance to get all the decent holiday deals in early July.

Roseburn · 10/08/2020 12:13

I always think the summer holidays in Scotland should be the first two weeks in May.

Newmama29 · 10/08/2020 12:13

Scotland’s best weather seems to be May/June time, I’ve always felt that we should have our summer holidays then & go back to school for mid July/August cause as soon as the schools break up at the end of June all it does is rain for the summer holidays! I have lived in the west coast of Scotland all my life

silver3 · 10/08/2020 12:13

Sorry yes I should have checked the weather forecasts. Of course I realised Scotland tends to be cooler than London but no, I would have not have thought it would be half the temperature at this time of year. Who would have thought? For instance, Paris is probably equidistant south from London as Edinburgh is north and the weather is much the same more often than not - maybe a few degrees difference, but not much.

WTF op is in London?

Oh god literally PMSL 😂😂😂

So OP Nicola sturgeon is out of order for not rearranging the whole Scottish term system based on the weather in London. You couldn't make it up Grin

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/08/2020 12:14

Glasgow is about as Northern as Copenhagan.

Toothsil · 10/08/2020 12:14

I'm north East England, pretty much right on the border, and it's 19 today. We very rarely get sweltering heat, we never ever get the heatwaves of down south. I keep seeing photos on Facebook of hot sunny days and kids in paddling pools and we're sitting in cold mist!

2pinkginsplease · 10/08/2020 12:16

No heatwave here however in Scotland we bring our children up to be tough, we can withstand any weather system that is thrown at us, usually 4 seasons in one day!

Alwaysthesun · 10/08/2020 12:16

Such a funny thread. I'm laughing away. Thanks for your pity for our kids. I think they'll be OK 🤣. Not meaning to be rude, but the presumption is bizarre.

But seriously, we tend to have cooler weather in June, July and August. For some reason May and Sept are lovely. That's just my opinion formed over the last few years.

Blackbear19 · 10/08/2020 12:16

This is up there with the All new holiday clothes thread, full of people who don't get why Scottish people end up with "holiday clothes" that don't see the light of day from one year to the next.

I actually wish Scottish holidays ran from End of May / start of June to mid July.
July is usually rotten!

chipsandpeas · 10/08/2020 12:16

I’m in Livingston and it’s a damp 16 degrees as felt that cold I had my heating on for a bit earlier

SnuggyBuggy · 10/08/2020 12:16

I thought the London centric cliche was that its always grey skies and driving rain all year round in Scotland

OverTheRainbow88 · 10/08/2020 12:16

I think most kids will be excited to be back and with their friends

SockYarn · 10/08/2020 12:16

I agree with this. That's when my birthday is and it's usually glorious. May/June is always nicer and warmer than July/August.
eggandonion · 10/08/2020 12:17

I'm in the south coast of Ireland, a gardening friend told me there is a six week difference in plant behaviour between here and northern Scotland.

Infullbloom · 10/08/2020 12:18

Heatwave? In Scotland Confused. I think you'll find that was on the 27th of July or thereabouts, usually lasts about 1 day per year, think the kids will be fine.
Also it's really only the private and Catholic schools who have blazers, most don't. Besides the kids here can cope fine with going to school in torrential downpours, howling gales and snow, I think a day of sun would be a breeze for most of them.

SockYarn · 10/08/2020 12:18

You really didn't do any geography at school, did you?

RadicalFern · 10/08/2020 12:18

@Caplin I'm also in Edinburgh and have had to put my big fuzzy socks on and my toes are still chilly. I don't envy the sticky Londoners their sweltering heat though!

caoraich · 10/08/2020 12:18

I'm in Glasgow in a jumper. June is always nicer than August here.

I read something recently saying that in the West of Scotland February is a drier month than August.

This is hilarious.

juliantwo · 10/08/2020 12:19

Hahahahahahahaha really??

TheFuckingDogs · 10/08/2020 12:19

I feel sorrier for English children - they have Boris as their leader

eggandonion · 10/08/2020 12:19

It's a long time to December holidays, do Sottish schools have a long midterm? (Irish schools have a week, last Monday of October is a bank holiday in the Republic. NI schools don't seem to take a week).

inickedyourbiro · 10/08/2020 12:19

taps oan!

SJK34 · 10/08/2020 12:20

Do children really have to wear the exact same uniform year round no matter the weather?
