Why aren’t people going swimming - am I missing something?

So another boiling day today and my local pool (only one for miles around in a large town) was virtually empty! I was quite happy as it meant DS and I could have a lane to ourselves but I was surprised more people don’t want to go swimming in this weather. It was the same on Thursday and last week on another boiling day.

CV is inactive in chlorinated water and I just make sure to take anti bac wipes to use on lockers, door handles and the bench in the changing rooms, with lots of hand sanitizer of course.

Am I missing something about swimming in the current climate?

Is it an outdoor pool?

I wouldn't go swimming inside on a nice sunny day, seems a waste

Oh we went from 2-4pm too so a time I expected it to be busy.

It’s a massive indoor pool. I’d rather be in that though than sitting baking in this extreme heat (for UK obvs).

Ours doesn't open until tomorrow and is booked up for the first 9 days -you can't book any further in advance than that

Goodness only knows when I'll actually be able to use the pool

I’m desperate to go! My local pools either aren’t open yet or only open for aquarobics type classes. The air temp in the pool where I took my daughter for lessons before lockdown is Usually very high though so I’d dread to think what it’s like at the moment, I guess if people think it’ll be super hot in there it’ll put people off.

I’d never go to an indoor pool on a lovely day; surely that’s a rainy day activity?

No way, pools are so warm and muggy, worse than being outside for sure!

You're lucky the pool's open! Ours aren't opening till September. However, I have a subscription to a well known private chain and the quietest time in the indoor pool is 3-5pm. Just enjoy it.

Our pool is closed to under 16s & the other localish one is fully booked & not answering the phone.

I won’t swim in indoor pools, too much chlorine and the changing rooms always seem grubby. I don’t like lane swimming either.

You have to go ready to swim and aren't allowed the use cubicles. Urgh.

I’m not overly comfortable with indoor activities especially whilst weather is nice. But ours are only open for lane swimming so not suitable for the kids. Until we can use the changing rooms properly I won’t bother, nobody wants to go home soaking wet.

The water is nice and cool in ours (enough to shock at first!) very refreshing.

It’s been open since the 25th July. It’s in a big new build leisure centre and is normally packed in the summer, especially at weekends and school hols.

I’m not complaining, it’s lovely that it’s quiet.

Just wondering why!

We have lots of pools near me but only a few of them are allowing parent and child sessions - most of them are doing lane swimming only. No good for us as DD is a toddler. The two pools which are doing parent and child sessions are on weekends only (I'd prefer to go during the week) and it was already fully booked as they're limiting numbers.

Only one parent is allowed to go with children to ours and as I have a 2 and 6 year old I won’t be going until that changes.

Ours has no restrictions, only that they’ve raised the pool floor so it’s not so deep that the lifeguards have to dive in and have contact with people if they get into trouble in the deep end so you can’t dive. DS happy to just jump though.

Can use changing cubicles and showers fine.

Very odd.

Frankly, it’s a struggle for me to be excited about swimming in a smelly chlorinated indoor pool in the bleakest of winter. I can’t imagine who would want to do it right now in the middle of summer when it’s lovely outside.

We’ve spent all day wild swimming in a river the past 2 days with nearly a soul in sight (while everyone has been packing the beaches a couple away shoulder to shoulder).

You couldn’t pay me to go to a leisure centre right now though.

Our local ones are only just opening. I'm expecting to have to book and not be able to change (which will be awkward). But not worried about Covid cos of all the chlorine.

Well firstly because we can't afford to and secondly because our local pool is next to a big park and parking is limited at the best of times let alone on a nice sunny day. I'm not even sure if the pool has even re-opened yet. We've got a nice little river on the moors for paddlling in though!

Many of them are closed. Even spa pools in hotels - some of them are closed to guests. Some pools have been open only to be closed again.

I don’t go to indoor pools on sunny days really

I don't like swimming at the best of times. I can't imagine going currently. Particularly with such lovely weather.

I go to a lovely outdoor pool, and you have to be up at 6am any day to book for a slot 7 days ahead. It's not at all easy to get tickets, and it's full to the current max capacity every day, rain or shine.
