Why aren’t people going swimming - am I missing something?

So another boiling day today and my local pool (only one for miles around in a large town) was virtually empty! I was quite happy as it meant DS and I could have a lane to ourselves but I was surprised more people don’t want to go swimming in this weather. It was the same on Thursday and last week on another boiling day.

CV is inactive in chlorinated water and I just make sure to take anti bac wipes to use on lockers, door handles and the bench in the changing rooms, with lots of hand sanitizer of course.

Am I missing something about swimming in the current climate?

@mindutopia @GiddapGreyWaynesKeat I’m so jealous. I’d love to try outdoor /wild/open water swimming

MyNameIsNotMummy · 09/08/2020 21:52

Must be just my area then! I’ve never known it to be so quiet and in this type of weather it normally would be packed and you’d have to wait for people to get out going on previous years experience.

It’s got to be CV related.

If our area was like yours, we would. It's odd how differently this is being done all over the country.

Where I am, we can only book lane swimming, we're meant to rest outside of the pool (so, not so great if you have poor stamina), and only the biggest pool is open. We're also not to use the changing rooms, but that doesn't bother me so much.

Once they have open swim open so my DD can swim widths rather than lengths, and swim in the family pool with their 'non-swimmer' area, and can rest in the pool as she needs, we'll return. We typically only had 4-8 people in the pool (including the 3 of us) when we went anyways.

Sanch1 · 09/08/2020 21:54

Our local ones that are open are open for adults only, so no swimming still for my poor kids.

SoddingWeddings · 09/08/2020 21:56

Christ, all the "nature is amazing, I am one with nature" people are out tonight.

I've been in my (blow up) hot tub today - at 34c, its cooler than body temperature so is still refreshing. I'm going to a local Lido on Wednesday for an evening swim and I can't wait. I'll be back in the local swimming pool from next week - money is my only issue.

Gingerkittykat · 09/08/2020 21:56

@monkeysox

You have to go ready to swim and aren't allowed the use cubicles. Urgh.
Is that single sex changing? My pool has a mixed sex changing village so would be impossible to do that, also as someone with a disability I need to be able to sit down when I am changing as I would lose my balance and fall over!

Pools are not scheduled to open in Scotland till September and it's the one thing I miss in lockdown. I will definitely go back as soon as it is allowed as it's the one form of exercise I can do without pain and I've noticed a loss of strength in the past few months. I intend to take antbac wips to wipe down cubicles before and after I use them.

BluebellForest836 · 09/08/2020 21:57

It’s been boiling all day so people went to the beach.

AriettyHomily · 09/08/2020 21:58

Ours is open for lane swimming only. My kids don't want to lane swim they want to play. Plus the changing rooms are grim at the best of times.

I would never choose to go indoor swimming on a baking hot day.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 09/08/2020 21:58

We ended up buying a frame pool to see if the DC would use it much, they've been in it every day during lockdown, it's honestly one of the best things we've ever bought.

I wouldn't be happy with them going swimming at the local swimming baths, so this is a happy medium.

Dutchesss · 09/08/2020 21:58

I'm desperate to take my children but ours are all lane swimming only which mine are too young for. :(

Dixiechickonhols · 09/08/2020 21:59

Pool I use is closed until September.

MushMonster · 09/08/2020 21:59

Lucky you yours is open! Here it will open tomorrow. Trying to book slots in the pool and activities.
We will take precautions, but we will be going.

ImFree2doasiwant · 09/08/2020 22:00

Our local pool is open and also very quiet. We're going again tomorrow, limit of 45 people at any one time though they haven't yet had to turn any away. There will be 1 hour time limit if it gets busy. Cubicles open, and showers, constant cleaning going on.

lampshadery · 09/08/2020 22:00

For me it's not the pool it's the changing rooms.

However I'm another one wondering why on Earth you'd go to an indoor pool on a nice sunny day? Definitely a rainy day activity here.

IncandescentSilver · 09/08/2020 22:00

I can't book my local pool because you have to be a member of the local sports centre and gym. Even thought its a local authority facility. Otherwise I would definately by swimming.

yomellamoHelly · 09/08/2020 22:01

Ours can only be booked a couple of days in advance. Pretty much all the slots are booked out within 2 minutes of them being opened up.

MyNameIsNotMummy · 09/08/2020 22:06

Was this government guidelines about changing cubicles not to be used?

The showers and cubicles are in use at ours. We were advised before they opened to arrive in costumes and try to only use cubicles after swimming.

I’d rather not swim in rivers or lakes as I like to see what’s under me! Could be all sorts of nasties in there as well. Wouldn’t want to swim in the sea now if the beach is busy and toilets aren’t open or people don’t want to use them due to CV! Swimming pools are safer for DC anyway.

Longpigs · 09/08/2020 22:07

I'm not going swimming, because I can't swim. If I could, though, I'd be going. I wouldn't be going down the anti-bar wiping route, either.

Swimming pools have always made me anxious because of Norovirus. So Covid is less bothersome to me.

FreekStar · 09/08/2020 22:09

Ours still shut with no opening date yet available. My dd is a keen swimmer and a member of a swimming club and so far they have no date for when the pool will open and the club can start training again. We are in west yorkshire so currently under a local lockdown- the future's grim Sad

Lovelydovey · 09/08/2020 22:10

Our local pools aren’t open yet and when they will do they will be strictly for lane swimming with socially distancing - so not much of a fun family activity.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 09/08/2020 22:13

Because despite living in a massive town there are next to no swimming pools, and the ones there are are too expensive and impossible to get to without taking at least 2 buses each way. Hmm

User27aw · 09/08/2020 22:14

I've been twice since they reopened, the first time there was only 2 other families there the second time about 6 other families. Never seen it so quiet. I would go on a really hot day though.

cringeworthit · 09/08/2020 22:15

Our local pools are all still shut.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/08/2020 22:15

I wouldn’t swim indoors on a lovely day, it’s a waste!

missyB1 · 09/08/2020 22:16

I’ve been going 3 times a week since they opened, I’m booked in for 4 sessions this week. I’m a rubbish swimmer ( breast stroke only, head out of the water) but I love it and it saves my sanity!
