Why aren’t people going swimming - am I missing something?

So another boiling day today and my local pool (only one for miles around in a large town) was virtually empty! I was quite happy as it meant DS and I could have a lane to ourselves but I was surprised more people don’t want to go swimming in this weather. It was the same on Thursday and last week on another boiling day.

CV is inactive in chlorinated water and I just make sure to take anti bac wipes to use on lockers, door handles and the bench in the changing rooms, with lots of hand sanitizer of course.

Am I missing something about swimming in the current climate?

But my kids have been swimming at my parents indoor pool.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 10/08/2020 00:16

Many of us without our own swimming pools or resident access to shared gym and aquatic facilities have been staying away from leisure and sporting activities with potentially large groups in close proximity. I think once the public sports centres are reopened for a while and have a Covid safe operating track record - patrons and active participation will return too eventually. This is similar for numerous overseas nations too.

I've been impressed by our local swimming pool and all the measures they have put in place. Among other things: a locker and changing cubicle is allocated when you sign in, the pool is divided into 3 wide lanes for slow (me), medium and fast swimmers, no more than 8 allowed in each lane and no overtaking is allowed.
The fast and medium lanes were full the last time I was there and someone insisted on whizzing past us in the slow lane. To be fair the pool guards did have a word with him about it but he was not happy.

MorganKitten · 10/08/2020 00:21

Because my local pool is £7 for an hour.

Nicedayforawedding · 10/08/2020 00:41

Our local gym has emailed me to say that a staff member has tested positive for Coronavirus. I had been thinking of going back but it’s still too much of a risk.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 10/08/2020 02:14

@MidnightCitrus apologies. I didn't read it properly Blush

heartsonacake · 10/08/2020 04:38

It’s quiet because nobody wants to be inside on a sunny day.

Anyone wanting to swim when it’s hot will be going to an outside pool or other water area.

Goatinthegarden · 10/08/2020 06:01

I’m not at all neurotic or overly concerned about catching Covid, I follow all of the rules, but have pretty much returned to normal life (teacher in Scotland, just getting ready for my first day back at school).

However, something about indoor swimming in this climate just doesn’t feel like a great idea. I know there is chlorine in the water, but floating around In water full of wee and spit, breathing in the steamy air doesn’t exactly scream inviting to me. I also am a bit squeamish about all the wet surfaces and puddles around the pool at the best of times, especially in the loos. 🤷‍♀️

MaskingForIt · 10/08/2020 06:34

just make sure to take anti bac wipes to use on lockers, door handles

Anti-bacterial wipes aren’t going to kill a virus.

stayathomer · 10/08/2020 06:46

Two of the kids last year had a virus (the old type of non destructive/killer virus) and ds mentioned to the doctor about swimming the following week and the doctor said the general area of indoor swimming pools was a hotbed for viruses, total optimum conditions and not to go the following week or we'd be back to him. Hence I was shocked indoor pools opened so early. Hadn't heard chlorine did that but it's the heat and the air circulating that would have bothered me anyway. (And I have covid without them even knowing where I got it, we hadn't really been out, so I'm not one to talkSad)

MinnieMountain · 10/08/2020 06:50

We'd go if our council opened a pool. They haven't even said when they will Angry

mogtheexcellent · 10/08/2020 06:58

Pool still closed. Sad

MrsWombat · 10/08/2020 07:05

I would often take my eldest swimming on a really hot day. It was never empty but not busy either. I suspected everyone else was outside in their gardens or at the local paddling pools. We do not like being outdoors in the heat so it was a good option for us.

My local pools are still not open. But an outdoor one that is within driving distance still has plenty of spaces on most of their sessions.

TitsOutForHarambe · 10/08/2020 07:05

I like to swim on hot days but then all of the pools over here are outdoor and unheated. I wouldn't dream of spending a hot day at an indoor pool, it sounds awful.

Ragwort · 10/08/2020 07:17

My favourite thing to do in Summer is to go the outdoor Lido but they are currently all booked up near me and if you get a slot it's just for an hour ... I love to spend the whole day there, I won't be going this year Sad.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 07:23

i wouldnt go when the day is hot, but also wouldnt not go while the virus is about,

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 07:23

i would swim in the sea

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 07:25

just checked and my local pool is for 12 years +

why would that be?

WanderingMilly · 10/08/2020 07:28

No pools open near me, I'd love to go. I even tried booking my (not too far away) spa place as that also has a pool. They said they were opening, took my booking and deposit and then said no, they couldn't open until September. (And they still have my deposit as well). Pretty fed up about it.....

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/08/2020 07:30

Ours is still closed but no way would I go on a sunny day, it's a rainy day activity to me.

MrsJonesAndMe · 10/08/2020 07:31

Ours is just not open. Also it's like a sauna in there at the best of times so by the time you are out and dressed you are drenched in sweat!

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 07:31

just checked and they also have family bubble sessions,
arrive beach ready,
shower with soap before swimming.

but also exercises classes are back, as is the gym

mamma456 · 10/08/2020 07:33

I love near an amazing water park in another country - undercover but open air, and we used to go every week.
In the days before we went into lockdown it became very quiet and the last couple times it was actually stunningly empty. It was kind of nice not having to battle crowds of kids and I felt we were safe - if no one's there we're not going to catch anything, right! But it felt a bit sad as well. All our pools have opened since and they are busy and people are being the most of it.

Pikachubaby · 10/08/2020 07:34

Anti bac wipes for handles? Ok if it makes you happy

But the virus would/could be hovering in that warm humid air more than anything

mondaywine · 10/08/2020 07:37

Desperate to swim in our house but no pool opening date for Scotland yet.
