To think schools should not reopen in Sept?

I think that schools should not fully reopen in September and instead be partially reopened to some years. It is just not safe enough to reopen yet. I'd say December at the latest for full reopening. If they can't reopen other smaller places, how can they reopen schools with 1000's of kids? AIBU?

Homeschool yours then. Most people want their kids back in school. Mine have done their well being off this time and did do the school work I know some will be far worse off than mine and really need to go back. Mine need to go back and get a proper education, that I can't give them long term.

ProudMarys · 09/08/2020 21:22

*have done their work well
See point proved, I'm no teacher!

Watdafark · 09/08/2020 21:29

@Delatron I didn't post a poll... It's not my thread. Confused

I personally don't disagree that kids need to go back to school - of course they do! I agree with the OP about phasing it in so there aren't hundreds of kids all in one place without social distancing, though. Even if social distancing measures are implemented, how on earth are they going to be enforced among such large numbers? Especially among the young who are not widely known for their sense (teens in particular).

My point about the virus is that it is likely to spread in such circumstances, infection rates may well rocket again, and then what?

Watdafark · 09/08/2020 21:32

The constant. "homeschool yours then" comments just seen smug and unnecessary, frankly. OK has raised a valid point.

EuphegeniaDoubtfire · 09/08/2020 21:34

@FrippEnos

I guess I meant "new normal" as opposed to normal, normal. That means teachers with PPE (hopefully), more hand washing etc, not just back to how life was at the beginning of the year (oh, how I miss it...).

I'm grouchy because I'm struggling. Every single fucking day I'm trying to work with a four year old. I can't bear the thought that he won't be going in September. At the moment I have two short days without him; I won't have that then.

Nicknacky · 09/08/2020 21:34

I haven’t seen one suggestion from the posters who are advocating part time/online learning about what working parents do with their children when they aren’t at school?

Yes, yes school isn’t childcare but with that and wraparound care it let’s parents work.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/08/2020 21:47

Blended/on-line learning will be for Secondary Schools as they are the ones most likely to be hit by 'bubbles bursting' on a regular basis. Not ideal for Y7/8 pupils to be on their own all day but doable.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 21:49

@EuphegeniaDoubtfire

It won't be much consolation but teachers do feel the same, many are also parents.

But this is a time when we should be supporting each other and making sure that we get this right the first time (sorry repeating myself).

We should be looking at what others have done, Taking onboard what is going well and discarding what is not.

We shouldn't just be saying 'get on with it' as that is the path to more shutdowns and children losing yet more education.

Maybe its shouldn't be up to them for your employers to make some concessions?
Nicknacky · 09/08/2020 22:05

FrippEnos My employers have been fab already, very accommodating. I’m already part time. Not much else they can offer.

H has his own business and whilst he can be to some degree available for school drop offs, can’t be there during the day.

So part time would be a disaster here.

They never do......

It's like some people live in an alternate universe sometimes.

My employer has been fabulous so far but come September there will be students who need teaching and I'll be expected to do that both in person and remotely. So even when I'm WFH having a small child present will make doing my job nigh on impossible.

LaurieMarlow · 09/08/2020 22:15

Why would employers make concessions?

Workers are contracted to their hours and conditions. There’s no incentive whatsoever for employers to accommodate any further than they’ve done already.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/08/2020 22:16

If virus rates increase in schools the chances are employers are going to be hit by many employees having to self isolate too.

Nicknacky · 09/08/2020 22:19

ineedaholidaynow And I will cross that bridge if, and when it happens.

And I know my employers will be fine about it, which I’m lucky for.

LaurieMarlow · 09/08/2020 22:20

If virus rates increase in schools the chances are employers are going to be hit by many employees having to self isolate too.

They’ll react to that if it happens. They’d see no reason to pre-emptively make their already difficult task of rebuilding their business harder.

SueEllenMishke · 09/08/2020 22:21

I wonder if people realise that it will be women most adversely affected by schools not opening? It will be mainly women who lose/quit their jobs, not men.
The impact on female participation in the labour market is potentially catastrophic. We will lose decades of progress.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 22:21

Nicknacky

Yet a solution for you would mean that someone else is put out.

Schools are going back full time.

I cannot see even bojo changing his stance on this one.

but should teachers be put at further risk for afterschool clubs?

Nicknacky · 09/08/2020 22:23

FrippEnos Put out? You are just being asked to teach the children.

I know you are against it, you have said it on every single thread.

Nicknacky · 09/08/2020 22:26

Oh, and still no solutions offered as to what we do with out children?

Easy to bang on about part time schooling, isn’t it.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 22:26

Nicknacky

Quite simply if you can't change then someone else has to do something to support your decision they are being "put out"

As for

I know you are against it, you have said it on every single thread.

ODFOD.

Go back and read them again before you start lying about what I have written because I have never said that.

Thanks @echt

LadyCatStark · 09/08/2020 22:28

Don’t send your child back then. Whatever. Some of us want our children to receive their education.

LaurieMarlow · 09/08/2020 22:28

Should I be solving all your problems for you?

You are after all allegedly an adult.
