To think Eric Joyce’s sentence is woeful

He is a violent criminal and paedophile the who has just received an 8 month suspended sentence for downloading an image of the worst kind of abuse to a 12 month old baby. The story has gained little traction in the media or online, and I imagine it’s related to his partner, India Knight who is standing by him, despite having a underage daughter herself who is living with Joyce. What a fucking lowlife.

SusieOwl4 · 08/08/2020 17:32

Another reason the sentence is inadequate , besides the obvious, is the time and horrific things the police have to go through to bring the conviction . It is an insult to that let alone anything else .

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 08/08/2020 18:12

Signed and shared.

MrsKeats · 08/08/2020 18:39

No mention of sex offender's register also

MrsKeats · 08/08/2020 18:41

Signed also.

Felifox · 08/08/2020 18:44

Signed the petition also

BananaPop2020 · 08/08/2020 18:46

@MrsKeats he WILL be on the Register, that was likely an oversight by the journalist. Sadly, this would generally be considered a good sentence for this offence, as there is a custodial element.

MrsKeats · 08/08/2020 18:55

Ok that's good then banana
The prevention order thing is confusing also. It doesn't seem to fit with this case.

Broomfondle · 08/08/2020 19:22

The sentence for viewing the crime of child rape should be the same as committing it.
He's absolute scum and our system of prosecution and sentencing should be shamed.

BananaPop2020 · 08/08/2020 19:35

@MrsKeats do you mean the SHPO? The Sexual Harm Prevention Order? If yes they go hand in hand with these cases. SHPO’s have conditions attached resulting in criminal sanctions if breached. For example, the offender might be prohibited from owning more than one smartphone, or may be barred from wiping his online browsing history.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 08/08/2020 19:41

It’s appalling

He is actively involved in supporting the abuse of children

I shall sign the petition

This thread will be down soon - if it is shame on MN

They can always delete posts which they do often do

Queenonfleek · 08/08/2020 20:32

Also signed .. a quick search has not shown any statement from India knight distancing herself from him which would imply they are still together.. which if true is beyond appalling and I think she needs to be held to account on this on her social media accounts where she clearly makes judgements on othrrat

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/08/2020 21:05

Signed. Appalling.

longwayoff · 08/08/2020 21:09

Absolute fucking disgrace and so is India Knight, a woman not noted for good judgement in finding partners, if she's staying with him. Utterly dreadful.

Terralee · 08/08/2020 21:13

Signed the petition & shared on Facebook.
What a disgusting excuse for a man.

Areyouactuallyseriousrightnow · 08/08/2020 21:21

It’s an absolute disgrace and he is literal scum of the earth.

GrolliffetheDragon · 08/08/2020 21:30

The sentence for viewing the crime of child rape should be the same as committing it.

Problem is somebody had already said on this thread that there are thought to be 300,000 viewing this sort of thing.

A quick Google suggests total prison capacity in the UK is 96,000, with around 93,000 of those places in use.

I don't disagree that he should be in prison, but there must be an awful lot of others who should be as well and if, as a society, that's what we want we need to build more prisons.

Tempnamelady · 08/08/2020 21:33

Read this , utterly aghast at both the crime and the pitiful sentence.

ambereeree · 08/08/2020 21:33

Signed

A family member on my husband's side got a suspended sentence for having thousands of images and videos in the worst category which he'd deliberately googled and accumulated over the years. His wife stuck by him and most of the family either don't know or defend him and say "he's a good man". He's still living a fairly normal life - although he has had objects thrown at his house because it was reported in county level media. I'm supposed to feel sorry for him feeling stressed and unsafe and for it affecting his health 🙄 I'm the only one in the family who's condemned him by refusing to see him; yes, I condemn him - not just his deeds but him as a person, good people don't do that. I will not see him or speak to him or allow him to have anything to do with my children despite occasional pressure from MIL. He should have gone to jail.

People go to jail for stealing. Why is the bar for a custodial sentence set so high for sex offenders that so many of them just walk free? A suspended sentence or probation means very little, we're all expected to "behave" and uphold the law. I just despair about sentencing.

SerenityNowwwww · 08/08/2020 21:42

Aren’t there threats to jail people who refuse to wear facemasks in certain public places?

Speckledhen10 · 08/08/2020 21:45

Petition signed.
Appalling sentence.
Given that he’s an ex labour MP I’m surprised that Keir Starmer or a female labour MP hasn’t made a comment & disassociated him from the party. But probably they couldn’t care less. ?

BanditoShipman · 08/08/2020 21:49

It looks like he has lots of previous convictions, not for sexual offences but for assault... nice bloke Hmm

Signed petition

BananaPop2020 · 08/08/2020 21:52

@2step, quite often the period on probation that an offender receives will outrun the likely custodial sentence, so it doesn’t “mean very little”.

2step · 08/08/2020 22:02

@BananaPop2020 I respectfully disagree. He's free to carry on his life, with a few constraints. Nobody actually checks that he's complying with the constraints - so, for example, he's stayed overnight in the same place as a child without having had any SS involvement to make sure the child was safeguarded. So yes, I think it means very little.
