Live in south London and a weekend away

Hi

OH and I desperately need a weekend away, we live in south London (near Wimbledon) we want to go away somewhere within a maximum of 90 mins drive, we don't want to do coastal.

We would like a nice hotel, maybe a spa hotel, a bit of a town or city.

Please recommend

@JBizz you got nothing better to do, than keep on and on and on and on commenting on a post you don't like? Go and google something else?

Get a life, if you don't like the post get off it..... you're the one spending time on something you don't like. Why?

The Mercury is about 2/3 miles out of TW and is fine for a base. Hotel du Vin is in the centre as is One Warwick Park. The Spa Hotel is 1.5 miles from the centre and has lovely grounds. If you end up this way I can send you a few recommendations for restaurants or pubs.

Baliffscourt in Climping?

Arundel?

doityourselfnow · 07/08/2020 21:24

@JBizz I'm not a "twit", you are as you're the one spending time on something you don't like.

Just scroll on by..........

New forest is nice. Balmer lawn and the Rhinefield have spa facilities.

leafeater · 07/08/2020 21:25

Nice spa hotel in Midhurst?

newyeardelurker · 07/08/2020 21:26

No mention of budget I think, so maybe look at Pig hotels. I've only had one drink in the new forest one and it was gorgeous. Not a budget option...

doityourselfnow · 07/08/2020 21:27

Ahh, thank you @WonderWebbs it say 10 mins, but that's obviously driving and not walking! Not massive drinkers, but would like to share a bottle of wine over dinner, so that wouldn't suit us.

I'll look again.

OP, could you not just tube / Uber it up to St Pancras and you could be in Paris in just over 2 hrs. Then just wander round and chill. No driving hassle. I don’t live far from you and we go all the time - It’s no more hassle than getting up north. 2 hrs 15 to Liverpool or 2 hrs 15 to Paris ..... hmm?

Otherwise, Canterbury? Bath? The Cotswolds has some lovely spa hotels?

But tbh, just driving round in the UK is so exhausting, you might as well just go to Paris or Brugge.

doityourselfnow · 07/08/2020 21:29

Love to @Capr1 but I fear France is the next country we'll have to self isolate from on return. ☹️

Some great suggestions here!

Capr1 · 07/08/2020 21:30

Oh but not Brugge at the moment obviously.,

doityourselfnow · 07/08/2020 21:31

Thank you all, some great ideas, I will investigate over the weekend.

To the snippy ones, who think they're the AIBU police, have a wonderful weekend! Keep on that policing, MNHQ needs you wonderful happy jolly people on AIBU!

Pennyhill park is an awesome spa hotel with a great restaurant but not much else to do nearby really if you want a city.

Newbie1999 · 07/08/2020 21:33

Also heard really good things about The Grove in Hertfordshire.

hahaboink · 07/08/2020 21:34

Oxford is great at the moment due to lack of students/tourists. Not hideously busy. In this weather head to the kidneys, walk along the river to Isis farmhouse for drinks/lunch. Best social distancing set up, massive garden. Walk further along to swim in the river. Have dinner in the Magdalen arms.

hahaboink · 07/08/2020 21:35

I’ve done lots of events at the grove. It’s lovely. England football team stays there. St Albans is a cute town.

caringcarer · 07/08/2020 21:36

Oxford is lovely. We stayed in village about 5 miles outside. I forget where but something on Thames. We got great deal on Travel Zoo. We went on open top bus ride around city. We went to Blenheim Palace another day. Fabulous ground's and rose garden. I don't know how long to get there but you should do it on train in about 1 hour.

Capr1 · 07/08/2020 21:37

Apparently Henley-on-Thames is beautiful this time of year? DH goes out cycling round there and says it’s stunning countryside.

If I were you, I’d google luxury spa hotels Surrey / Sussex / Kent on Booking.com or whatever and see what’s available and if there’s any deals and let that guide you.

Phineyj · 07/08/2020 21:38

What about around Lewes in East Sussex? Fast train from Croydon and the area is beautiful.

2155User · 07/08/2020 21:39

If you can stretch to a 2 hour drive, Tuddenham Mill in Suffolk is wonderful

TheRosariojewels · 07/08/2020 21:40

Eastwell Manor, it's a champneys. Peaceful surroundings.

gogorogo · 07/08/2020 21:44

New Forest?

gogorogo · 07/08/2020 21:45

Rye?
