Minor ethical dilemma- What should I do?

I found some sunglasses where we were sitting while in a big busy London park with DGC - they played with them for a bit and we hung out in that spot for a while (maybe 45 minutes- 1 hour). I took them home as no one came back for them and I thought they were fairly cheap. I am not at all into fashion and am clueless about things like this, having never bought sunglasses for more then a tenner myself.

I have just googled them and they’re £185. I feel bad for whoever lost them.

What would you do in this situation?

OP posts:

The police station if you can find one will not be happy with the paperwork it would entail.
I agree post of facebook without the make of sunglasses and not naming the park.

Twinkled · 07/08/2020 17:50

Is there a park keeper? Should be , if so , hand in with your name and address and ask for how much time elapsed before you can claim. That, or keep them. Stop feeling bad about it . X

Zoejj77 · 07/08/2020 17:56

If they were cheap ones you wouldn’t be posting. Not your fault someone left them behind. I imagine they are gutted. I’ve lost a pair before in a similar fashion. Keep them and wear them. London is a massive place and it would be nigh on impossible to return to the rightful owner.

Supernaturalmumma · 07/08/2020 17:57

I haven't read the full thread, apologies BUT . . .I did lose my Raybans last Wednesday in Richmond Park. They were a birthday present and I am gutted. Have emailed the park thanks to the suggestion on here. OP if they are Aviators, found in Richmond Park last week, somewhere around Rohampton or Robin Hood gates, please message me. Hopeful , , , , , ,

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 07/08/2020 17:59

Honestly just keep them and think it was your lucky day! The owner will probably not be traced at this stage & they could possibly claim on insurance? 🤔🍀😃

SparePantsAndLego · 07/08/2020 18:06

You could always put all of the detail on here and maybe the power of MN could help to reunite them with their owner?
I’d not post a photo in case anyone is keen on illicitly claiming them but perhaps a brand name, colour and info on where you found them?
I’d happily investigate FB groups in the area where you found them.

nannykatherine · 07/08/2020 18:09

Why would you n touch a pair of glasses that’s been hanging around the park ????
Probably covered in Corona

SouthernFashionista · 07/08/2020 18:22

I don’t think you are a thief OP. Far from it.

Could you contact the London radio stations to see if they could make an announcement?

momtoboys · 07/08/2020 18:22

Its so interesting that you posted this because one on my sons lost a pair of sunglasses that cost approximately that much and he was heartbroken. He knows where he put them down while putting his golf clubs away and someone must have found them. He is 19, has worked and gone to school since he was 15 and has NEVER spent that much money on anything for himself. He really liked those sunglasses and would have been so grateful if someone had posted on FB or brought them to the nearest location (store, clubhouse) to return them.

GoodEnough1 · 07/08/2020 18:25

Last summer two policemen turned up at our house to deliver my DS wallet. They said it had been in lost property for a couple of months so they thought they would deliver it. So, not sure it’s true that they don’t do lost property any more (although I was very surprised and pleased - it hadn’t occurred to DS to check if police had it). So it could be that the owner of the sunglasses checks with the police although admittedly in a London park I would think it is a long shot.

TheRobotsAreComing · 07/08/2020 18:38

No need to stress so much, just keep them. Better yet, sell them and donate the proceeds to charity. You seem like you were trying to do the right thing so don't beat yourself up. It's a lesson learnt

Timeforredwine · 07/08/2020 18:44

I'm not sure I understand why you took them, they weren't your property and how much they cost is neither here not there. Just hand them in st the police station if that's allowed and if not throw them in the glasses/opticians bin they sometimes have at local libraries or charity shop for people who cant afford glasses!?

Housecar · 07/08/2020 18:46

Some really unkind comments on here towards someone who is trying to do the right thing. Wow.

Mirinska · 07/08/2020 18:52

I would definitely try to return them any way you can. That would be the only justification for taking them in the first place. Imagine if you had lost something of value to you? Sadly there a fewer people these days that di the decent thing. Fi Dre’s keepers is a fairl6 selfish approach to life and other people’s property.

WarmHeyerette · 07/08/2020 19:01

They probably paid £20 for them at TK Maxx though.

VinylDetective · 07/08/2020 19:12

@WarmHeyerette

They probably paid £20 for them at TK Maxx though.
And? I’d be even sadder to lose them if they’d been the bargain of the century.
Thisismytimetoshine · 07/08/2020 19:38

They'd still presumably cost £185 to replace? TK Maxx bargains tend to be a one off.

Idontbelieveit12 · 07/08/2020 19:45

Jesus there are some real bitches on here 🙄

RenoSusan · 07/08/2020 20:05

People leave sunglasses everywhere all the time. My daughter left hers at a popular chain restaurant and asked me to go get them. The restaurant had two large drawers full of glasses. They advised me that they only kept the expensive ones because there were so many left.

Luckingfovely · 07/08/2020 20:11

Lord you've had far too much ridiculous, hysterical grief on here. I totally get you were trying to do the right thing.

FelicisNox · 07/08/2020 20:12

Keep them or sell them.

Normally I would say use Facebook to try and find the owner but if you don't use FB and the police won't be of use just keep or sell them.

FizzAfterSix · 07/08/2020 20:13

Put it on the local NextDoor or leave a note on the bench.
Think you should have left them tbh.

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2020 20:19

I lost a pair in a local town centre last year and if someone found them, I'd rather they used them or passed them on that leave them lying around for the street cleaners to bin.

Jack80 · 07/08/2020 23:31

Either put on Facebook to find owner or clean and keep them.

YankeeDad · 08/08/2020 00:05

@FredaFrogspawn

You’re getting a bit of a hard time here, considering you found them in the grass. Had you left them there, somebody probably would have stepped on them!

If you make reasonable efforts to reunite them with the owner then you’re doing the right thing.
