Minor ethical dilemma- What should I do?

I found some sunglasses where we were sitting while in a big busy London park with DGC - they played with them for a bit and we hung out in that spot for a while (maybe 45 minutes- 1 hour). I took them home as no one came back for them and I thought they were fairly cheap. I am not at all into fashion and am clueless about things like this, having never bought sunglasses for more then a tenner myself.

I have just googled them and they’re £185. I feel bad for whoever lost them.

What would you do in this situation?

Yes it would be great if the owner was on here and read this!

If it's one of the big London parks they'll have rangers/wardens. Tell us what park it is and I'll find you an email address or phone number to report it to.

RunningFromInsanity · 06/08/2020 20:31

I have no idea why you took them in the first place. The fact you thought they were cheap really is neither here nor there.
Would you have taken a cheap handbag? A cheap mobile?

You should have left them there. Now there’s no chance of the owner getting them back.

Ginfordinner · 06/08/2020 20:35

Local Facebook pages are brilliant for this kind of thing. Can you ask someone who is on Facebook to post about the sunglasses?

Illuyanka · 06/08/2020 20:35

If you thought about actually googling, you must have guessed it's not cheap tenner ones. I don't get it why you took it with you, googled it and feeling guilty now. It's quite easy to tell from expensive one to the cheap ones.

Illuyanka · 06/08/2020 20:38

I don't think the title should be minor ethical dilemma. It's not minor at all.

SockYarn · 06/08/2020 20:40

They're more than probably fake.

But you should hand them in.

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 06/08/2020 20:40

@rosiejaune

I wouldn't feel bad for someone who has £185 spare to spend on sunglasses.

And if it's a big busy London park it probably has people from all over visiting it, so a local group probably won't reach them.

But you can hand them in at a police station, and get a receipt so you can get them back if nobody claims them within a certain period of time.

You're a disgrace @rosiejaune !
FredaFrogspawn · 06/08/2020 20:41

Yes I do regret taking them. I am a bit naive about the cost of things like this - they looked ordinary to me but when I got home, I saw a small brand name on them and that’s when it occurred to me they might be more expensive. If I can put it right I will.

Thanks for the suggestion of the park rangers - I have emailed them to ask if they can help.

SweetBillie · 06/08/2020 20:41

I would be really upset if I lost expensive sunglasses. I think you should contact the park wardens - google will give you contact details.

SweetBillie · 06/08/2020 20:44

Oops. Cross-posted - I hope the owner is reunited with their sunnies. Someone could have saved up for weeks to buy them and is kicking themselves for leaving them in the park. I am always losing sunglasses hence I only ever buy from Poundland Grin

elainesummers · 06/08/2020 20:44

Would the police really not take them anymore? I lost my purse in central London and it was handed in to a police station, it wasn't that long ago - I think it was 2013.

So you stole some sunglasses that clear3dudnt belong to you? Do you understand the term theft by finding? It's theft. They aren't yours. You stole them. Hope you can sleep at night. You should have left them where they were.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 06/08/2020 20:45

My expensive sunglasses are the only expensive item I own. All my cash goes on my dc as a rule.
Quite a shocking statement that poster made tbh.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/08/2020 20:45

Sorry - the me too was to @SweetBillie

roses2 · 06/08/2020 20:47

It's unlikely you'll reunite them with the owner. Either keep them and enjoy them or donate to a local charity shop.

Don't feel bad it happens all the time.

Can you contact the park - does it have a website? You could email them?

jessstan2 · 06/08/2020 20:51

There is bound to be a local facebook group, I would put them on there.

elainesummers · 06/08/2020 20:51

@nomorepies yes you're right, I guess it is quite different. And I did indeed have my driving licence and all my bank cards in there Blush

Quite shocked they wouldn't even take a purse anymore though.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/08/2020 20:51

I’ve done that now on someone’s suggestion.

@DarlingCoffee

Why did you take them in the first place?
This is my question too?

Finding something like glasses, I wouldn't even touch them, I'd leave them where they are. Owner might retrace their steps and find them again. Taking them is a strange thing to do.

I agree.
