Woman at GP surgery today.

So today I had to go to GP for a procedure.

Got there and waited as per instructions on door because someone was in reception.

I also rang the buzzer so they could wave me through to waiting area if I wanted.

I had put my mask on.

Lady (60's maybe?) came right up next to me and stood. I obviously moved away for social distancing.

Then asked me if I'd rang bell and I said yes, was waiting as someone in reception area already.

She then opened the door, went in and waited in reception against rules. Rules are clearly A.G. eye sight level on the door we were stood at. It also says read before entering! So I then had to wait outside even longer.

AIBU to think she's a dick and also reception should have sent her back out as per the rules. I accept they may not have clocked me so couldn't also tell her to wait her turn!

I just think it's going to become much harder if people who decide the don't care about rules start getting ahead of those who are following them. It may lead to more and more people giving up on them?

I think an awful lot of people have already given up on the rules. It doesn’t help that a lot of the rules don’t make much sense...

i think you might want to talk to the reception staff and tell them their system doesn't work and how they think situations like this should be handled

She might not have realised.

Couldn't get too worked up about it tbh. Stuff happens. Sometimes it's annoying. I'd move on probably.

Why mention her age?

At my GP the over 65s, people who are shielding due to official medical advice, and pregnant women are told not to wait in the queue and to go straight in.

So talk to the reception staff. Email the practice manager. People are getting fed up of 'the rules' because they're so arbitrary and changeable.

Next time, just cheerfully say "Oh, sorry, I'm queuing before you; look, the instructions about where to stand are here on the door".
She might have poor eyesight or have been thinking about something else and not realised what was going on. Might of course also have been a rude person who hates rule, but you don't know that as you didn't say anything.
The people inside didn't know which of you had buzzed or was first.

If it bothered you why didn’t you open the door and call to challenge “excuse me, I told you I had buzzed, there is a queue” and if she argued I find asking someone why they feel the rules don’t apply/ they are more important than me usually works. Dicks. The reception team would also realise then you are waiting.

Same happened to me at the weekend at local minor injuries, elderly gentleman got pretty close, rang the buzzer and tried to walk in when there were clearly others waiting outside ready to be called in. TBH he seemed a bit confused about what was being asked of him. It didn’t really bother me.

I also think a lot of people now assume we don’t have to distance now people are wearing masks, I get the same impression when I go shopping, people are not longer worried about being near people because they think masks are the answer to everything.

People have given up on rules. There are so many nobody knows what the fuck they are doing!?

Government will prob change all again by 5pm.

Maybe she was sick and needed to be seen quickly.

I went to GP’s this week. The surgery door is locked and the waiting room is not in use (I was informed in advance). I announced my arrival over intercom and was told to wait in car/outside. Nurse called my mobile to say she was coming to get me, unlocked the surgery door and escorted me in, straight to her room.
No problems.

It's the receptionist you need to speak to....it's all very well to want MNers to give you some support but it doesn't solve your problem.

This is the problem when places expect people to behave the right way and use common sense.
Some places here in Australia realise this and have security staff on the door to ensure that people follow the rules, for everyone's safety. We went not that long ago to the place that issues licences etc. to get a renewal - the waiting spots were marked clearly and there was a number limit, and a nice man on the door who counted people in and out. I didn't actually need to go on so was politely requested to wait outside, to allow another actual customer in instead.

I realise not everywhere can do it, and there doubtless aren't sufficient people available at a GP's surgery, but a huge percentage of people do not think the rules need to apply to them.

We are now experiencing an upturn in cases again (not anything like what is happening in the UK, still, but concerning nonetheless) because of people not thinking the rules apply to them.

You can only control what you do , not what someone else does ..

She might have poor eyesight. She might be dyslexic. If your GP's door is anything like our's there's always lots of rubbish stuck on it so people become accustomed to not reading the posters on the door.

There are a multitude of possibilities here OP that wouldn't necessarily be obvious to an observer.

She may be attending for on-going treatment and could have been advised by her HCP to enter the premises and sit to wait, - either for her benefit (can't stand for any length of time) or for HCP's (s/he can see that her next patient is present as s/he sees his/her previous patient off the premises.)

You have made the assumption that she is queue jumping because she entered the premises before you, but you don't know if she was attending the surgery to see the same HCP as you.

She maybe has v poor eyesight so didn't see the signs or, as once happened to me when someone asked me how many headache pills they could take and how often while he was holding the box of pills in his hand and I said "how many does it say on the box?" His answer, in a very small voice, "I don't know. I can't read".
Don't assume everyone is in the same position as you.

That could've been me last week. I held it together while waiting to go inside the surgery but fell apart once inside because of some bad news I had had that week. Maybe she was ignorant, maybe she didn't/couldn't read the notice on the door, maybe she was sick, maybe someone she loves is dying, who knows but I'd let it go.

We have a fucking ENORMOUS sign outside our shop that says 'entry with a trolley only' and then gives the reasons for this, plus another sign just inside the doorway that says 'only come in with a trolley, please'. People elbow the signs out of the way to come in without a trolley.

Most people don't read signs. That's all.

Meh. Is it that important to be worked up?

The over 60s have priority where I am in most places since Covid started.

So maybe her age is relevant to the GP practice. But it's not to you.
