And to be super nosy, what they were for.

OP posts:
Thedogscollar · 04/08/2020 00:19

Once for an ear infection. He is twenty now and not had any since then.

OwlinaTree · 04/08/2020 00:22

Op, get the tonsils removed if you can. Our son was having lots of issues with the tonsils but the hospital wouldn't remove them as he didn't quite fit the criteria.

Luckily my DH had medical cover with his work and he had them removed privately. Best thing for him, it's made such a difference to him. Makes me mad that if we didn't have that option he would still be suffering now.

midnightstar66 · 04/08/2020 00:30

DD1 is nearly 11 and had once for a stubborn ear infection from swimming daily abroad. Dd2 had whooping cough as a baby and had several doses by age 2, then also at 2 for an infected chicken pock. She's now 7 and not had any since so assume it's all given her an iron immune system in the long run!

Pookaroo · 04/08/2020 00:42

DS is 4 and he's had 4 lots. Bronchitis, ear infection, tonsillitis and post op when he had his tonsils and adenoids removed.

InglouriousBasterd · 04/08/2020 00:50

Scarlet fever and tonsillitis twice.

GreenPlum · 04/08/2020 00:56

Zero

orangeicecream · 04/08/2020 00:58

DD (13) once for tonsillitis
DS (14) never

Soontobe60 · 04/08/2020 01:12

Dd1 never
Dd2 4 times for tonsillitis up to having them removed at 6

Notenoughchocolateomg · 04/08/2020 01:27

6yo once I think for tonsillitis/,ear infection. Almost 8yo 3 times for tonsillitis.

KorkMum · 04/08/2020 01:37

My teen has never had antibiotics.

Didkdt · 04/08/2020 01:46

Op if this is a tonsils question with DS one GP said let's wait one said we really should do it and so referred a week after a trainee GP said never let them take your tonsils out.
The ENT said they really need to come out she told me I'd be do glad we had it done, in a tear he would be thriving and I have to say she was right. A year later he was taller fitter and sleeps better his breathing sounds easier and it hadn't occurred to me before how hard it had been.
He still gets sore throats but his tonsils had been making him properly ill.
The 3 weeks post tonsillectomy were horrible truly awful and it's not a surgery to be taken lightly my son had moments where he felt betrayed that I'd let him go through that but as I said his breathing was better straight away and he has been so much healthier since

morethanmeetstheeye · 04/08/2020 03:05

DS - I have no idea as there's been so so many. Particularly strong ones after an op as a baby to protect him; countless rounds due to ENT issues and some for upper respiratory. He needs his tonsils out but they won't do it.

DD - two lots so far for upper respiratory infections

AnnaMariaDreams · 04/08/2020 03:19

DS8, probably 8 courses. Ear infections and chest infections.
He last had them last October for a chest infection.

pintoffginplz · 04/08/2020 03:42

My eldest never, my youngest twice. One for a ear infection and the other for a dental abcess.

Rosebel · 04/08/2020 04:15

My youngest daughter has had 14 lots of antibiotics. She is 12 now but 8 of those courses were before she was 3. It's always for eat infections. She's had grommets twice and now rarely gets eat infections.
My eldest has only had about 4. One for tonsiitis and the others for ear infections. Luckily since her operation on her ear the infections seemed to have stopped.
Or perhaps they've just outgrown the infections

Mintjulia · 04/08/2020 04:44

Once. My ex left our ds with an unfamiliar dog, and then didn’t clean the bite or seek medical advice. Brought ds back four days later with a massive infection Angry.

A week of broad spectrum ABs and three visits to the hospital to ensure infection was under control.

Even thinking about it still makes me want to murder ex.

Lookyloo · 04/08/2020 05:13

3yo for an ear infection
6yo for a kidney infection
8yo for a vomiting bug thing

MrsMonkeyBear · 04/08/2020 05:57

My 2 are only 5 & 2.

Dd1 has had abs 3 times, 1x chest infection, 1x impetigo and 1x scarlet fever.

Dd2 has had them twice, first time she was in hospital with what they thought was meningitis but it was only 3 days until tests came back clear. 2nd time was an ear infection.

Thisdressneedspockets · 04/08/2020 06:02

16,13,11. No antibiotics

feelingdizzy · 04/08/2020 06:07

Ds 16 twice I think , Dd 18 has never had them .

whenwewereyoung · 04/08/2020 06:42

I think three times - twice for tonsillitis and another time for chest infection that would not shift.

everythingthelighttouches · 04/08/2020 06:55

Lost count. I’m guessing maybe 40 ish so far and for DS7.

About:
10 courses In NICU/ HDU/SCBU for 2x sepsis and 4x horrible stomach infection called NEC that prems get

10 for chest infections

10 for tonsillitis

5 following airway and lung operations

5 after hospital for other issues

JamesTKirkcompatible · 04/08/2020 07:08

Parents in 18th century used to lose 3 out of every 4 children before the age of 5, and child mortality then halved before 1950 then went down again to 1 in 5 of that number. Not all due to infectious diseases, but I would expect 40% of children mentioned here today to have been seriously ill with bacterial infections and saved with many antibiotics, maybe 25% to be fine & never needed them, and the others probably having them in more complex circumstances due to other confounding factors.
That's not too far out of step with the anecdotes here.

OP sorry to hear about the many antibiotics your child has had - I would also find it scary and worry about antimicrobial resistance. I don't think its unreasonable to try other things as well as or between courses of antibiotics to try and improve their overall health.

@tankflybos

What is the point of this thread?
RTFT FFS. Then you'll see why.

And why people are offering up information - that's no different from any other thread on here!! It's called CONTEXT. It's not as if people are also providing their child's name, address and date of birth. If you don't like it, move along. Jeez...

FAIL2PREPARE · 04/08/2020 08:30

Ds started to have antibiotics after the age of 3 (due to catching bugs in nursery) for bouts of tonsillitis and one lot for scarlet fever. He's had around four courses in total over 3 years.
