To ask how to make my house smell fancy (on the cheap)

Now, much as I would love to buy a jo Malone mandarin basil and lime diffuser, my budget just will not stretch to it!

What Reed diffusers are you guys using to make your house smell fancy.

Ps following another thread, I’m probably being tacky and common asking this! Aibu to ask?

Shit, I just use aldi plug insBlush

Dylaninthemovies1 · 03/08/2020 14:12

I’m not keen on plug ins! When we moved into our last house, the house was full of them to disguise the old smoke smell. They make me feel a bit sick!

St Eval.

Orange peels

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2020 14:14

I have a friend who is a Body Shop at home bot (I know). Her house always smells fab with the Body Shop diffusers.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/08/2020 14:16

Aldi do knock off Jo Malone reed diffusers which are just as nice.

Toilenstripes · 03/08/2020 14:16

I use Lily Flame candles. My favourite is called Exquisite and it’s very nice.

Thelnebriati · 03/08/2020 14:17

You can buy all of those essential oils on Ebay for under £6, and if you buy 2 or 3 you get a discount. I use orange, mandarin, lime and sandalwood (not all together), I put a few drops on a wet cotton wool pad and leave it in a small pot of water.
In winter I use them in a pet food container hanging on the radiator. At Xmas I use nutmeg, cloves and pine.

RadicalFern · 03/08/2020 14:18

Dab a couple of drops of orange oil on to all your radiators from time to time. Very cost effective and also nice.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 03/08/2020 14:18

TK Maxx have a good selection of nice candles and reeds usually and half price. Ive found Neom in there and other less well known brands but really nice.

TheMerryWidow1 · 03/08/2020 14:20

I use the jo malone knock off ones from Aldi. Reeds and candles very good. I fine the pomegranate one the best and smell lasts longest.

boymum9 · 03/08/2020 14:22

Get a steam diffuser thing from amazon and nice oils to use with it, the white company do a few and I always use their winter one through winter (surprisingly Wink)
I used to always buy jo malone candles and diffusers (don't know why I would waste so much money) and they were lovely but the aldi ones esp the candles really do compare very well

BakedCam · 03/08/2020 14:23

Another fan of Aldi's knock off home smellies.

Love the orange oil on the radiators too by a PP.

Jojo19834 · 03/08/2020 14:23

I’ve just bought the Asda knock-offs. I haven’t used the genuine diffusers but have used other items. These seem ok and at £4 for the small you can try one and then stock up if you like. I have always been a user of diffusers and go expensive, but just recently bought some cheapies and found them to be so much more fragrant and you can therefore have more of them!

florascotia2 · 03/08/2020 14:25

I'm not making any judgements - this is personal preference - but can't you just open the windows and let nice fresh air waft in? To me, that smells so much nicer than candles/diffusers etc. To me, they just smell sickly and artificial - overpowering and headache-inducing.
But it's your home, so...
Previous poster who said 'orange peel' had a very good idea. It dries well and lasts for a long time; ditto lemon/gratefruit peels, dried. Or a lavender or rosemary plant, in a pot. Or other green herbs or pot-plants with leaves that smell fresh, such as geraniums. In the old days, people kept bowls of dried leaves and flower-petals, sometimes mixed with a little cinnamon bark.

Another vote for the Aldi reed diffusers

thegreenlight · 03/08/2020 14:30

Black pepper and sandalwood diffusers from Dunelms smell amazing. I bought large and small diffusers and candles. I have them all over my house and it smells great.

LioneIRichTea · 03/08/2020 14:31

I clean my house with Method stuff OP and it always smells soooo good. The eucalyptus & mint and clementine sprays are the best. I wipe the kitchen over every day so the smell is always around Blush

LioneIRichTea · 03/08/2020 14:32

Ooh also I love any fresh linen smelling candles Smile

missmarplesapprentice · 03/08/2020 14:33

Tesco and Aldi have knock off versions of the candles/diffusers.....I second the Method cleaner too.

Please use something natural, there have been some good suggestions.

All these reed diffusers and scented candles that people are so desperate for their house to smell of, you know it's not good for you? You're not supposed to breathing that in all the live long day!!!

PlanDeRaccordement · 03/08/2020 15:03

As a home with asthmatics, we use nothing. We just keep the house very clean and dust free. I agree with @MoggyMittens23 that if you must use something, use something natural as perfumes are not healthy to breathe in all day.

Zaphodsotherhead · 03/08/2020 15:04

Another vote for opening windows.

Unless you live somewhere there are diesel fumes all day every day, there is no substitute for fresh sunlit air blowing through the house. I leave a window open all day every day, whatever the weather (I realise that I am fortunate to live somewhere I can do this).

Also a few growing plants around the place. Ferns do well, but anything leafy will help clean the air.

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/08/2020 15:05

I just open windows too-can’t stand all these chemical smells
