To ask how to make my house smell fancy (on the cheap)

Now, much as I would love to buy a jo Malone mandarin basil and lime diffuser, my budget just will not stretch to it!

What Reed diffusers are you guys using to make your house smell fancy.

Ps following another thread, I’m probably being tacky and common asking this! Aibu to ask?

I know its a MLM, but scentsy stuff is very very good. The warmer can be expensive to start with, but mines lasted ages now and IIRC the girl I got it from said there was a lifetime guarantee.

Such strong smells..I can have one on downstairs and can smell it in my room. Beautiful.

@VinylDetective

Aldi do Jo Malone knock offs that are indistinguishable from the real thing. I have one on the go all the time.

And my top tip is those massive bars of fancy soap you get in TK Maxx, there’s one tucked behind every radiator in our house. They scent the whole house in the winter.

That sounds like a good idea, but don't they melt?
BatShite · 03/08/2020 17:15

Mind given cost is an issue, maybe not scnetsy. Worth investing in when moneys better though. I used to write if off as junk until I tried one.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/08/2020 17:15

The white company do classy scented oils, you could use the in a diffuser.

Melroses · 03/08/2020 17:17

It is a good time for harvesting lavender atm. Just as the petals are going over.

VinylDetective · 03/08/2020 17:20

Weirdly, no. They get harder and harder and last a lot longer when you eventually use them. I discovered it by accident when one dropped down behind the radiator and the room smelt amazing.

The white company is not normally described as a cheap or budget option though...?

leave a box of washing powder somewhere discreet in the front room.

JammyHands · 03/08/2020 17:24

I'm with @florascotia, esp at this time of year when the gardens are full of flowers and it's mild enough to leave windows open all day. I don't like artificial smells - they make my sinuses jump.

Becca8675309 · 03/08/2020 17:24

M&S Apothecary range - everyone says my guest bathroom smells like an expensive spa! I tried the Aldi knock offs and sadly they don't smell anything much like Jo Malone.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 03/08/2020 17:25

Candle holder essential oil burner. Simple and easy, and can control the strength easily. Quite pretty and comforting to look at too, depend on the design.

hotchipontheshoulder · 03/08/2020 17:25

Aldi's version of JM Lime Basil and Mandarin diffusers and candles!

SollaSollew · 03/08/2020 17:28

I have a bit of a scented candle addiction, which is a family joke now but on the positive side means I always get something I like for birthdays and Christmases!

I find the Aldi ones a bit hit and miss sometimes, I had a fantastic Wood Smoke one which I've never seen again but the Jo Malone ones don't seem to project very far in my house, maybe I'm not burning them long enough? I can recommend Sainsbury's of all the Supermarket ones I've tried, for me they are the most reliably good at having a strong but fancy scent, not cloying or sickly.

The two I can really recommend are Hyacinth and White Birch and White Sandalwood and Amber. But they all seem to burn really nicely and the smell fills the room as well as some of my expensive ones.

GreyGardens88 · 03/08/2020 17:29

Trust MN's to look down on all artificial scents and insist opening a window is the key to a nice smelling house. I trust you don't use scented soaps and perfumes and just use water to clean yourself as well?

To me I don't think fresh air smells of anything unless it's that smell you get when it's just about to rain. I wish they could make that smell into a reed diffuser. Mind you I don't live in the depths of the Surrey countryside where the air smells like hay and pixie dust

I use woodwick candles the rest of the time

doadeer · 03/08/2020 17:31

I use the electric diffusers and lovely essential oils.

You can make really nice blends and it works out very cost effective.

Plus the are relaxing to watch!

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 17:32

Opening windows doesn't let nice smells in (unless you live downwind of Kew Gardens), it just lets stale smells out.

VinylDetective · 03/08/2020 17:33

The Lime, Basil and Mandarin one is identical, to the point that I think they’re made in the same factory. I have the JM cologne and blind tested with the hand wash - couldn’t tell which was which.

CushyButtercup · 03/08/2020 17:36

I use old fashioned beeswax furniture polish. It leaves a lovely subtle smell that doesn't bother asthmatics.

Crankley · 03/08/2020 17:39

I use unscented soaps, no perfumes or scented candles or air freshener (a misnomer if ever there was one) or fabric conditioner, nor do I live in the Surrey countryside.

We have lots of flowers in our garden and back onto woodland. It definitely lets nice smells in. No idea what Kew Gardens are.

The smell of rain on pavements is one of my most hated smells!!Grin

Ok...

Marshmallow91 · 03/08/2020 17:49

Buy a bag of potpourri that's unscented on ebay. Shove in a bowl and shake on and mix round some essential oil (also available on ebay for a few quid a bottle) and you can choose exactly what you want. Spending a tenner will last you at least a month.

81Byerley · 03/08/2020 17:53

I open the windows....
