To ask how to make my house smell fancy (on the cheap)

Now, much as I would love to buy a jo Malone mandarin basil and lime diffuser, my budget just will not stretch to it!

What Reed diffusers are you guys using to make your house smell fancy.

Ps following another thread, I’m probably being tacky and common asking this! Aibu to ask?

I just clean well and open the windows - I can't abide plugins, reed diffusers or whatever, I think they smell awful!

ViciousJackdaw · 03/08/2020 15:22

Another vote for lovely, clean, fresh air. There is nothing nicer.

OrigamiOwl · 03/08/2020 15:56

I've got some nice ones from Dunelm.

For those saying just open the window that relies on you living somewhere that doesn't have it's own smell. I live next door to heavy cannabis users. If I just left my windows open my house would reek of it!

LakieLady · 03/08/2020 16:09

A lot of synthetic perfumes trigger migraine for me, so I avoid plug-ins etc.

A few drops of essential oil in some water in an oil burner works a treat though. And you can mix your own blend: I mix geranium or orris root with a drop or two of sandalwood or lavender and it smells fantastic.

I also love the smell of old-fashioned beeswax polish. Some of the aerosol ones smell the same. When I've had a good polish just before I go out somewhere, the house has that lovely old-fashioned clean polish smell when I walk in the door. It's fabulous!

Crankley · 03/08/2020 16:22

I agree with florascotia2 open the windows.

crumpet · 03/08/2020 16:29

Clean carpets, clean bed linen and towels, fresh air, and yes the Aldi jo malone Knick offs are quite good. But an over reliance on scent is not “fancy” - and can hint at an effort to disguise other smells such as the smoking you mentioned (or dogs/ musty linens etc)

crumpet · 03/08/2020 16:29

*knock offs!

66redballons · 03/08/2020 16:37

Chuck open your windows. Keep things clean and your home will sMell good. Too many chemicals never smell pleasant.

CountFosco · 03/08/2020 16:39

Another vote for open the windows and dry your washing on a washing line. Don't smoke. Clean the house regularly (particularly if you have pets).

Flowers (daffodils or fressias or lilies are readily available, although lilies may remind some of funerals) are good for making a room smell fresh but not necessarily a cheap option and they need changing regularly if you want to do it the whole time.

Auldspinster · 03/08/2020 16:42

Spearmint and lemongrass essential oils make for a lovely fresh scent for the house.

coffeeagogo · 03/08/2020 16:45

I asked about nice diffusers on another thread and was recommended this www.dunelm.com/product/wax-lyrical-nordic-shores-reed-diffuser-1000075426 - It is gorgeous

MorganKitten · 03/08/2020 16:46

Poundland started doing a glade candles that smells like Jo Malone and other brands. Today my house smells like Victoria Secret.

TheMandalorian · 03/08/2020 16:47

Report the cannabis farm next door to the cops. Problem solved. Not so easy if you live downwind from an abattoir admittedly.
Nice smelling cleaning products. Wash sofa cushions quarterly and pop some fabric with a few drops of essential oils on inside the covers.

LtJudyHopps · 03/08/2020 16:48

I love the Aldi diffuser (lime & mandarin?) but I have no idea if it’s a dupe of the JM one as never smelt them. They also do candles which are really nice.

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 03/08/2020 16:51

I don't understand the whole 'open your windows' thing though. Surely that would just make your house smell of nothing. Air.

pigsDOfly · 03/08/2020 16:52

Having your house smelling 'fancy' is very popular where I live and often when I walk around the area all I smell is horrible sickly perfume smells coming from people's houses.

I open my windows. My bedroom window is open all day, and when I get into my bed at night my bedding smells of lovely fresh air. Much nicer than some Jo Malone £50 candle smell.

PregnantAndTiredMum · 03/08/2020 16:53

I do like nice scented candles but I find my house smells the best when it's been given a really good clean and the windows have been open all day.

MintyCedric · 03/08/2020 16:53

DW Candles at TK Maxx are lovely. I've found really nice mandarin, basil and lime candles in there too - not Jo Malone but just as nice and much cheaper!

PregnantAndTiredMum · 03/08/2020 16:53

Oh yes and fresh flowers throughout the house with bedding dried outside.

VinylDetective · 03/08/2020 16:55

Aldi do Jo Malone knock offs that are indistinguishable from the real thing. I have one on the go all the time.

And my top tip is those massive bars of fancy soap you get in TK Maxx, there’s one tucked behind every radiator in our house. They scent the whole house in the winter.

MintyCedric · 03/08/2020 16:56

These electric diffusers are also great. You can use real essential oils so no chemical/artificial smell and you can mix your own blends.

Hingeandbracket · 03/08/2020 16:59

Another one here for opening the windows.

Who wants their house to smell of whatever it smells of plus someone's crazy idea of what a "natural" mix of chemicals made in a factory in Runcorn (or more likely China) smell is?

Mashingthecompost · 03/08/2020 16:59

Candles plus essential oils in a burner? Actually burning something can burn up weirdness in the air. Also. If your house smells, ask someone else what they smell when they enter. My brother's rented house stank of damp, he couldn't tell despite knowing all the issues it had. Some reed diffusers make me want to turn myself inside out, and they're not always apparent - can smell great in the shop but become really volatile when you set them up. Once they're in the air and more concentrated they can be choking. Also the glade things, the prev owner of our home had them and I still catch whiffs of the base stench of them, 3 years on, after a clean down and decorating. It's in the walls. Fucking horrible.

Mothermorph · 03/08/2020 17:03

I open the windows because I like fresh air, I also like reed diffusers and candles and the smell of clean washing. They're not mutually exclusive.
About a mile from us there is a sewage works, when the wind blows in the wrong direction you certainly wouldnt be opening your windows!!

reluctantbrit · 03/08/2020 17:13

DH gets headaches by just walking past a lily so we have absolutely no fragrances at home.

We clean with ecover, open the windows on a daily basis thoroughly, wash pilow covers and throws quite often and ensure that no stinky shoes or outdoor clothes are left in the hallway (a runner and a rider who is also a scout and the pack loves outdoor adventures).

If at all I would use natural oils or dried herbs like lavender but all kind of candle, infusers or plug ins are just a money making machine in my opinion.
