To ask how to make my house smell fancy (on the cheap)

Now, much as I would love to buy a jo Malone mandarin basil and lime diffuser, my budget just will not stretch to it!

What Reed diffusers are you guys using to make your house smell fancy.

Ps following another thread, I’m probably being tacky and common asking this! Aibu to ask?

I have windows open all day every day. Even I. Winter. But I also love a candle / diffuser. Espa smell divine. As do white company and jo m. I've been very impressed recently with the M&S aromatherapy range (brown bottles). They smell very spa like. Can't abide a plug in though. Gross and give me a headache.

Lottapianos · 03/08/2020 19:06

'Got a much cheaper one on Amazon that's great!'

Good to know, ta!

Beetle76 · 03/08/2020 19:12

I think one of the Sainsbury’s home range of candles and reed diffusers has a really nice nice scent - the sandalwood and amber one. They also did a Jasmine and Pineapple Flower for a while (not sure if that one is still available anymore) which was nice and fresh smelling in a summery way. I think that some of the other scents in the same range aren’t so great though...

BangingOn · 03/08/2020 19:33

Jo Loves has a range of candles in Zara at the moment which are just lovely, especially the orange blossom. The fragrance lasts for ages and they don’t give me a headache like a lot of fragrances do.

At the pricier end of the scale is Santa Maria Novella pot pourri, which is incredible.

I am also tempted by one of these which looks beautiful.

EachandEveryone · 03/08/2020 19:39

Sainsburys own diffusers are really good. Especially the more expensive versions.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 03/08/2020 19:42

The Next ones are pretty good. There's on called New York which I love, it's £18 but lasts ages and makes the whole of my downstairs smell amazing.

RedPanda2 · 03/08/2020 19:44

I love having the windows open, unfortunately not everyone lives near a lavender farm. Some ppl live in very built up areas or near main roads. I live in the country but come fertiliser spraying season I've got as many Aldi candles going as I can. I love an essential oil in the burner aswell, and soap on radiators

Rabbittheart · 03/08/2020 19:49

Airing a house makes a huge difference. I would have windows in latch all year round if it wasn't for my freezing cold husband. There nothing worse than a stuffy house with loads of air freshners to cover smells

Method ylang ylang shower spray smells divine, like a spa. I bought it during lockdown when nothing else available. I love it!

tsmainsqueeze · 03/08/2020 20:09

I agree with regularly opening windows , i also wash throws /cushion covers a lot as i have 2 dogs , also hoover most days .
I use method lavender cleaner which smells lovely .
When i come home i can not smell my dogs just a clean home , i'm not immune to dog smells as i work with animals.
I still love a nice candle , currently burning a £30 brissi candle that cost £3.00 at homesense , clearance shelf, subtle but really fresh .
There are lots of unknown brand candles there but if you know good candle makes there are sometimes absolute bargains.

whenwillthemadnessend · 03/08/2020 20:23

I've just gone round and turned all my Aldi diffusers after this thread. The lime and manderine one definitely has the most punch.

I'm going to check out m&s Sainsbury's and dunelm after this tread.

Atozandback · 03/08/2020 20:24

Get some stocks ,they smell lovely.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 03/08/2020 20:31

Potters crouch, they're lovely. Only quibble is that the diffuser pots dont have the name on them so if you like the smell and have thrown away the packaging you may struggle to remember which one it was Smile
Fireside in the winter is blissful.

TheDoctorDances · 03/08/2020 20:39

The Airwick reed defusers for £3ish are pretty good. Strong at first though, my house is open plan and I can smell them upstairs and down. I also find putting unlit scented candles by an open window makes the room smell good.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 03/08/2020 21:08

Well I can have my windows and back door open all day, and windows open all night (I rarely shut them, even in winter), but when you're a childminder and have the constant whiff of shitty nappies throughout the day, your own 2 boys at home during the holidays and a Springer spaniel in the house, the windows being open doesn't really cut it. My house is quite old and I would love to just have the smell of fresh air all day, but it's just not enough.

pringlesontoast · 03/08/2020 21:20

I really love the Method products, they smell amazing. Leave your windows open, fresh air does wonders

anothernewusername1 · 03/08/2020 21:26

@TheOnlyMrsK

I make and use my own wax melts. I found the scent of my favourite perfume, so during lockdown my house has been smelling marvellous and I’ve saved a fortune not putting perfume on every day Grin
share the wealth Mrs K!
RoseMartha · 03/08/2020 21:28

Tesco cotton one

Silvercatowner · 03/08/2020 21:36

I have never walked into a house that has candles/perfume/diffusers - in other words has a distinctive smell - and thought 'mmm that's lovely'. Mostly it's 'breathe through your mouth so you don't smell it'. I just haven't smelt a smell from one of those that is tolerable. I keep windows open and my house clean. Fresh flowers (some of them) smell lovely and I can just about bear some smelly soaps in the bathroom.

ell9 · 03/08/2020 21:36

I love my candles and I am a big fan of Bath & Body Works which I burn under a candle lantern lamp so it's heat activated instead of set light to which means the candle lasts literally forever.

I also like the Next diffusers, I treat myself to one every year at Christmas I think roughly £30 but it's the large one and lasts all year in my house.

I wipe diluted zoflora on my radiators, skirting boards and staircase bannister (test patch first).

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 03/08/2020 21:39

Im going to have to try that Method cleaner now! It's always appealed to me as it is natural but the price put me off! Might nip out and get some now..

I just bought the mint and eucalyptus, and the wild rhubarb ones tonight because of this thread. I can confirm they are very nice. I've also ordered the ylang ylang one. I've definitely been converted to these as spray cleaners now. A bit more expensive but worth it as they smell so much nicer.

I also bought the Nordic shores reed diffuser in Dunelm while I was out. Can also confirm that's very nice.

I've taken notes from this thread because I'm pregnant and need fresh smells all the time.
I usually love the smell of new wood and we just had a new fence built a few months ago. I lived the smell before I was pregnant. Now I can hardly go in the garden!

Snowinsummer · 03/08/2020 21:53

The Aldi reed diffusers I've tried are not nice on
My opinion I'm afraid (lime basil mandarin & Rose noir)

Lurchermom · 03/08/2020 21:57

I just bought one from Sainsbury's - rhubarb and vanilla I think - cost £9 and honestly it smells amazing. I normally hate diffusers!

HubbabubbaT · 03/08/2020 22:14

Aldi diffusers...and method almond floor cleaner Grin smells divine! Been selling our house and all the viewers have commented on the lovely smell... It makes the house smell comforting and homely.

HubbabubbaT · 03/08/2020 22:15

But make sure you get the Pomegranate Aldi diffusers..! The others aren't so nice

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2020 22:19
