To ask how to make my house smell fancy (on the cheap)

Now, much as I would love to buy a jo Malone mandarin basil and lime diffuser, my budget just will not stretch to it!

What Reed diffusers are you guys using to make your house smell fancy.

Ps following another thread, I’m probably being tacky and common asking this! Aibu to ask?

Everything except fresh air smells cheap and tacky in my opinion.

Thislittlelady · 03/08/2020 17:59

Haven’t seen them for a while but you used to get small round metal ‘rings’ that you sat in your light bulb in a lamp. Out your oil in the ring and when lamp on it heats oil and smells of whatever you want .... dab some oil in your radiators, use zoflora around your house to clean. Smells fab and loads of different smells to choose from. B and m usually have a good variety

monkeymonkey2010 · 03/08/2020 18:00

wipe radiators, light bulbs with fabric conditioner or zoflora....when they warm up it makes the house smell gorgeous

reluctantbrit · 03/08/2020 18:01

I think we are far too used to artificial smells to enjoy actual fresh air.

Yes, I don’t use perfume a lot, I juse minimised scented body wash and my facial skincare also is not scented. I just hate artificial smells.

I also don’t use fabric softener, pointless and counterproductive for towels, or zoflora.

I must be a unicorn here.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 18:03

Zoflora is a disinfectant. You really shouldn't use it as a room scent.

doadeer · 03/08/2020 18:05

I love scents! I have the windows open all day and night for fresh air but I also have a myriad of candles and diffusers. Nothing I love more than lighting my espa candle in the evening, makes my lounge smell like a spa. I use tons of fabric softener as well.

Each to their own!

Thislittlelady · 03/08/2020 18:06

‘CLEAN your home with zoflora.’

SerenDippitty · 03/08/2020 18:11

I don't like artificial smells either. Scented laundry detergent, scented fabric conditioner and scent enhancers on top - ridiculous. And air fresheners and scented candles are pollutants.

Pimmsypimms · 03/08/2020 18:15

Yep, Aldi Reed diffusers here too! They last for ages and always smell divine! Sainsbury’s are also good for reed diffusers, Dont bother with Asda though, they don't smell of anything!

TinkersTailor · 03/08/2020 18:26

Ooo I love a smells thread.

I use a lot of Spanish products in my home.
Nenuco especially has a clean, lemon scent (not like toilet cleaner lemon..) and it's absolutely beautiful.
I spray all my soft furnishings (sofas, rugs, curtains, pillows, bedding, carpets..) with it and they always smell really clean and fresh.

1001 carpet fresh foam works a treat too.

Yankee Candles in the scents Fluffy Towels and Clean Cotton for everyday.

Yes to getting a window open every day to allow fresh air in, just to clear the stuffiness.

Plug-ins. Febreeze make a Lenor Unstoppables plug in (the green scent) and, as I use the beads on my washing, it makes the whole house smell like laundry.
I have 6 going (but do have a large house)

Wax melts are great and you can get all sorts of scents. I have a drawer full.

TinkersTailor · 03/08/2020 18:29

Posted too soon.

I spend a lot of time cleaning the house and find the biggest 'smell traps' are the rugs and throw pillows.
I take them outside every few days and give them a really good bash before pegging them on the line (if the weather is nice) to let the air flow through them.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 03/08/2020 18:31

I like coffee-scented candles. Not keen on overly "fresh" scents, but the coffee candle creates a nice welcoming smell.

TheOnlyMrsK · 03/08/2020 18:31

I make and use my own wax melts. I found the scent of my favourite perfume, so during lockdown my house has been smelling marvellous and I’ve saved a fortune not putting perfume on every day Grin

Ninkanink · 03/08/2020 18:38

We keep the house fresh (windows always open, except for during proper storms) and clean (bedding washed regularly, cooking smells cleared out by extractor fan/open windows, foods and dishes cleared away quickly, etc etc) so we don’t need to use artificial smells for freshener purposes. But I do like using a little essential oil for a lovely fragrance. At the moment we have ginger & grapefruit - I love citrus in the summer, but in autumn/winter I love frankincense/myrrh & other spicy mixes. I just refresh our pot pourri with a few drops of oil every once in a while. You can also get wooden balls &/or other vehicles for the oil(s). One little bottle is quite reasonably priced and it lasts ages.

Thislittlelady · 03/08/2020 18:40

Anyone remember body shop fuzzy peach essential oil? Absolutely amazing smell. Can’t find it anymore. Haven’t been around for years....shame

Lottapianos · 03/08/2020 18:44

Anyone use those Muji water vapour things that you use with essential oils? They smell and look lovely in the shop

Tappering · 03/08/2020 18:46

The only place I put reed diffusers in is the bathrooms. I bought a couple of nice looking glass containers, and then make my own essential oil mix. You can buy packs of replacement reeds. For the rest of the house - cleaning rugs and cushions regularly and opening doors and windows to air it out.

ballsdeep · 03/08/2020 18:50

@Dylaninthemovies1

I’m not keen on plug ins! When we moved into our last house, the house was full of them to disguise the old smoke smell. They make me feel a bit sick!
The Aldo diffusers, Jo Malone style, are amazing
itistiime · 03/08/2020 18:51

@Dylaninthemovies1 - perfume parlour does wax melts and fragrance dust in most Jo Malone scents for about £3. I use their perfumes which are good quality

For the home I put some water and fabric spray in a bottle and spray it around the house

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/08/2020 18:54

Im allergic to plug ins and aerosols.

Another vote for plenty of ventilation.

I also use essential oils in a diffuser - lemon is particularly refreshing! (WARNING SOME ARE LETHAL TO PETS DO YOUR RESEARCH)

Im going to have to try that Method cleaner now! It's always appealed to me as it is natural but the price put me off! Might nip out and get some now....Smile

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/08/2020 18:57

Argh all these posts about using laundry products to scent a home!! Shock
I went to a house once where they were melting lenor unstoppables in a wax melt burner!!!! My eyes were red raw and burning in minutes i had to leave!!

Pinkypie86 · 03/08/2020 18:58

Wipe down the radiators with Lenor or such like, especially through the winter when the heating is on - creates a lovely smell through the house.

Plug ins give me headaches ( or so they seem to ) so, I usually go into TK Maxx and see what cheapies are around!
Aldi ones are very good. Also, Poundland and Primark have ones that are very nice. :)

Half a lemon in the fridge takes the nasty smells from their too!

Pinkypie86 · 03/08/2020 18:58

Their??? Really! There...

doadeer · 03/08/2020 19:00

@Lottapianos

Anyone use those Muji water vapour things that you use with essential oils? They smell and look lovely in the shop
Yes though my muji one was broken when I bought it and the staff were really arsey about refunding it. Got a much cheaper one on Amazon that's great!
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 03/08/2020 19:00

@MintyCedric

These electric diffusers are also great. You can use real essential oils so no chemical/artificial smell and you can mix your own blends.

People need to be careful with essential oils, some of them are really bad for pets, they are from nature but that does not make it healthy to have them wafting about your house constantly, animals can’t get away from what we spray in our homes, natural smells or synthetic, both can cause problems.
