My mum likened getting a tattoo to paedophilia

So DP and DM were having a conversation about tattoos (he has a sleeve & chest tattoo, and mentioned that he is planning another soon)

She hates them and was making this absolutely clear. She thinks they’re disgusting (‘especially on women’) and very ‘look at me’.

She was giving all her unsolicited opinions and he shrugged and said ‘I don’t see the harm in them, they make people happy’ to which she replied ‘abusing children makes paedophiles happy’.

I don’t care what people’s opinions are on how tattoos look, but AIBU I’m thinking this is a ridiculous and offensive thing to say? I’m fuming.

That is a really flawed argument! YOu know that.
She can argue, but she can't argue WELL

Nuclear option arguer?

SomeWateryTart · 01/08/2020 16:43

She sounds like a solid gold bellend. Sorry. I know she's your mum and all...

I can't stand people like this. All cats bums and judgement.

SomeWateryTart · 01/08/2020 16:44

@SonEtLumiere

That’s a ridiculous thing to say. I think the only reply is “You seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel there”.

Actually I also find tattoos horrible, and have yet to see one that I thought was an improvement to skin. But that is my opinion, which I usually keep to myself.

Exactly! You don't have to like them. Many people don't! But you don't have to be a prat about it either.
Freixene · 01/08/2020 16:45

‘Mum, are you implying there’s no harm in paedophilia??’

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 01/08/2020 16:46

There is nothing wrong with tattoos, everyone 'normal' knows this.
Mil is obviously spoiling for an argument.
However I do think your OH her son should be directly questioning her about her comments especially as he has tatoos.

NoAdventureNoTime · 01/08/2020 16:46

Getting tattoos done harms no-one, and well, the other clearly does. What a bizarre comparison

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 01/08/2020 16:47

Maybe I've misunderstood. Is this your mother? I would be raging.

SillyCow6 · 01/08/2020 16:49

Tattoos only hurt the person who wears them temporarily so long as they are done properly.
Paedophilia hurts children physically and mentally for the rest of their lives....bit of a daft comparison.

She sounds like she feels superior to your dp? I dont particularly like tattoos but plenty of my friends have them and I wouldnt look down on anyone for a tattoo. Although being completely Im not sure how Id react to facial tattoos initially

yadayadayesokay · 01/08/2020 16:49

@TheQueef Yes this sounds accurate!

Being a dickhead obviously makes her happy.

It's not as though he's planning on pinning a 3 year old down and tattooing LOVE and HATE on its hands. And I'm sure she wouldn't be accusing merchant seamen and sailors on destroyers during WWII as being exactly the same as paedophiles because they happened to have the things.

Yes, she's deeply offensive and best avoided permanently. Up to you whether you do that, though.

yadayadayesokay · 01/08/2020 16:50

@SomeWateryTart No problem, that’s how I feel about her too at this moment in time

Is there a paedophilia version of Godwin's Law?

motherheroic · 01/08/2020 16:53

There's always someone who slips in how much they hate tattoos but stress how they're such a good person for not saying anything. Yawn.

SquashedSpring · 01/08/2020 16:54

That's very, very odd thing to say.

Hairthrowaway · 01/08/2020 16:55

I have always thought that one’s argument is inherently flawed if they have to resort to extreme examples like that

Hairthrowaway · 01/08/2020 16:56

Strawman fallacy perhaps

iklboo · 01/08/2020 16:58

That's so much of a straw man argument they're going to use it in the next remake of The Wicker Man.

Emeraldshamrock · 01/08/2020 17:02

That was a loser low blow comment. I hope she is planning to apologise for her irrational outburst.

formerbabe · 01/08/2020 17:02

That's crazy. I detest tattoos...and I think they look disgusting and cheap, especially on women. However, I'm aware that's my opinion and that other people's tattoos aren't causing any harm to anyone.

Her argument doesn't make her sound very bright

Dreeple · 01/08/2020 17:06

Is she sure abusing children makes paedophiles happy?

Only paedophiles would know that for certain.

If anything it’s trivialising paedophilia, it’s not something you throw around light heartedly to make a (Bad) point.
