Welcome OVienna! Any new info gratefully received here Smile

I also fear there will be civil unrest if there isn't a clear 'winner'.

OVienna · 24/08/2020 18:59

@TheNorthWestPawsage
All of my friends are Democrats, although I do have family who are Trump supporters. No sign of any of them shifting in their views, they want that Supreme Court intact and that's that. Further: The religious ones believe that God can work through a Sinner. This is why they don't mind about the pussy grabbing - they continue to pray for him, but it is not a requirement to be 'perfect' before you can be an instrument of God's Word.

I am a church goer myself but not evangelical. I am not throwing shade in any way, but it has taken me a while to understand where they are coming from. I think this is the pathway they use to justify him.

Welcome OVienna

One thing that I have to face up to, which I am sure has already been discussed here at length, is the potential for Biden to win an even larger share of the popular vote than Hillary did and still lose the election
And that's the very scary bit isn't it....

DeJoy at his hearings. Oh my.... his body language is not good...

@OVienna

I think 4 years ago we had more active Pro-Trump posters bots here, at least that I've noticed. Has anyone noticed other threads?
Or maybe we engage less when they show up.
Or maybe they are busier with covid-19, on both sides of the
It may well change on the run up to the election.

Oh I am on US FB groups. Have the Trump bots found MN? Why would they bother with a mainly British site? I can barely get past the aggro to donate what would you guys do?!!!!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/08/2020 19:38

We laugh at them, and then carry on without paying too much attention, I should think.

OVienna · 24/08/2020 19:47

Am I allowed to tell you how to contribute to Biden as a forriner or will that get me barred?

Anyway it is not cash that it needed now so much as access to biting and counting ballots. I am not sure any amount of Blue money will help with that.

#Looking at you Bloomberg!

OVienna · 24/08/2020 19:48

Access to voting not biting.

Although go ahead and bite, why not?

O Vienna Welcome!

I think this election outcome is one that we simply cannot predict. There are just too many 'unknowns'. Will voter suppression succeed or fail? How many undecided voters are there really (on both sides)? All we here can do is educate ourselves, educate those who will listen and do our best to be sure our votes get counted. And pray if you're a praying person. We'll have to worry about the 'aftermath' when it becomes 'the now'.

Lweji We'd love to open doors and windows, but we're also inundated with smoke from the wildfires so we're being told to keep everything shut because the air is so unhealthy. The fires themselves are not close but we live in an atmospheric 'draw' and the winds bring the smoke right up where we live.

To All Thanks for your concern and advice. I've spoken to the Public Health Nurse and she's advised us that we're doing all the right things. DS2 will need to arrange to get tested with his doctor (if he'll recommend it) as most places are only testing people who are symptomatic. The nurse was extremely upset about how cavalier his employer has been and said that although she expects a report will pop up through contact tracing, she's going to be sure that the Public Health Officer is made aware.

DS2 has been told he'll be paid for this week but that his employers "don't know beyond that". Right. Suuuurrree. Knowing them that means that their lawyers haven't told them yet if they can get away with not paying them. Yes, DS2 is desperately looking for a better job but right now it's near impossible.

Hello, OVienna.

'An NBC News report that Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and immigration policy architect, called for a show of hands among senior officials on separating children from parents is being called “a damning display of white supremacy” and a repeat of crimes against humanity seen through history.

In a meeting of 11 senior advisers, Miller warned that not enforcing the administration’s "zero tolerance" immigration policy “is the end of our country as we know it" and that opposing it would be un-American, according to two officials who were there.'

I didn't watch any of the RNC last night. Saw a bit of Trump in Charlotte accepting the renomination earlier in the day and that was enough,

The Guardian's Key takeaways from the first night of the Republican convention below.

Here are the key takeaways from the night:
Republicans delivered a dark, Trumpian message centered on the alleged dangers of electing Joe Biden as president. Despite party leaders’ promises to paint an optimistic vision about the future of the country, Republicans instead attempted to scare voters into supporting Trump by pushing baseless claims that Democrats would “disarm you, empty the prisons, lock you in your home, and invite MS-13 to live next door”, as Florida congressman Matt Gaetz said.

The convention kept fact-checkers busy as the RNC peddled falsehoods about the coronavirus pandemic. Republicans praised Trump’s response to the pandemic and accused Democrats and the media of failing to recognize the threat posed by coronavirus, even though the president has said as recently as this month that the virus “will go away”. Health experts dismissed Republicans’ presentation as “all propaganda”.

Trump made multiple appearances at the convention through pre-taped videos, ensuring he will remain the star of the event. Despite the president’s criticism of Democrats for including many pre-taped videos in their convention last week, Trump appeared in two such segments tonight. Considering Republicans did not craft a party platform for the convention, the president’s repeated appearances underscored that this week is certain to become “the Trump Show”.

Nikki Haley tried to walk the line between embracing Trump and promoting her own vision for the future. The former UN ambassador began her speech by celebrating Trump’s foreign policy agenda and accusing the Obama administration of disastrous inaction. But Haley, who previously served as the South Carolina governor, then pivoted to calling for a more inclusive America. Haley praised her home state for removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol in 2015, which seemed to be at odds with Trump’s repeated criticisms of Nascar for banning the Confederate flag from races.

Republicans copied elements of the Democratic convention. Certain segments and speakers of Monday’s programming appeared to be a direct response to the Democrats’ convention last week. A Democratic state legislator explained why he was supporting Trump, an obvious attempt to counter prominent Republicans’ endorsements of Biden last week. A father who lost his daughter in the Parkland shooting also addressed the convention on Monday, a week after another Parkland father spoke at the Democratic convention.

Kimberly Guilfoyle was mocked by critics for her loud and enthusiastic speech, which was delivered to an empty room. Guilfoyle, who serves as a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, shouted much of her speech, prompting comparisons to a “North Korean propaganda lady” and a SoulCycle instructor.

Senator Tim Scott attracted praise for his hopeful speech, which clashed with the overall dark tone of the evening. Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, explained his belief in the American dream, noting that his own grandfather was forced to leave school in the third grade to pick cotton. “Our family went from cotton to Congress in one lifetime,” Scott said. “And that’s why I believe the next American century can be better than the last.”

TheNorthWestPawsage · 25/08/2020 08:16

And I suspect this final paragraph from another report sums up yesterday and probably every one of the 69 days to come before Nov 3rd.

None of it was likely to win over wavering independents. This was a festival of fear aimed squarely at the base. It’s Trump’s party now: Republicans just happen to be living in it.

All speakers at Trump's pressers and round tables have to begin their contributions with "Thank you for your leadership." It's a formula that they must say to keep on his good side.

Trump's Dementia Disaster Weekend
Dementia is aggressively grinding away at Trump. His weekend was as bad as his week. His terminal velocity free-fall continues. New podcast cut today updates his disastrous weekend plus a choice of music for him at the Republican National Convention.

Heffalooomia · 25/08/2020 13:08

Thank you for your leadership
his ego is so bruised and fragile that he can only function if he has constant praise and flattery, and so he becomes increasingly detached from reality

Lweji · 25/08/2020 13:13

I bet the dementia defence will kick out as soon as he leaves office and has to face the courts.
