To be majorly pissed off at new lockdown rules?

Teen DD has been looking forward to Eid for weeks. She has desperately been waiting to see the rest of her family and now we've been absolutely screwed over. She cried for most of the morning on and off and I'm just so annoyed that she's entering this state of absolute desolation again because she wasn't given a chance to prepare for Eid not being on. She was okay the last time if not very bored because she knew what was happening but this time she's just absolutely gutted. AIBU to be so angry? I just feel like it's ruined our day and I've wasted a whole load of money that I won't get back on food.

The short notice and clear-as-mud announcement on twitter was appalling. I live in the centre of the lockdown area so will be affected too. Feeling very hard done by as my council area has only the same number of new cases as the whole England average, and has decreased from last week. We've been included so that their lockdown map looks tidy and doesn't have a hole in the middle. Makes me very angry. If we had a proper track and trace system there would be no need for this.

randomer · 31/07/2020 22:45

Sorry, just to clear, obviously Easter has existed for thousands of years. The " celebration" has existed for a short time.....10/15 years maybe.

murasaki · 31/07/2020 22:45

Eid Mubarak

Try to have a nice time with your family. I hope it all goes well, even if nto what you planned.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 31/07/2020 22:46

@Porcupineinwaiting

with more notice the celebrations could have been brought forward

Which is exactly why there wasnt more notice. Hmm

There could have been a halfway house - reinforcing the rules about numbers of people/ households allowed. Will be really interested to see the comments should this happen on Christmas Eve.
AutumnLeavesSeptember · 31/07/2020 22:46

Really sorry Flowers announcing a few hours before on Twitter not okay. It's so important that people have at least a little time to get their heads around things before being slapped with (another) new set of rules.

frumpety · 31/07/2020 22:46

Am I the only one who wants to drive over to @mediciempire house and relieve her of some of her Biryani and assorted starters and puddings ?

2020 is an absolutely rubbish year, so many people have had a really terrible time. Your DD is loved and cherished and safe, tell her next year's Eid will be amazing. As of tomorrow , she can start a 2021 Eid Pinterest page (if that is old hat, I apologise ) get her to find recipes/decorations/clothes that will knock the socks off 2020 !

Eid mubarak Smile

crazycatgal · 31/07/2020 22:48

Eid Mubarak OP

I agree that the way this was announced the evening before Eid was ridiculous. So many people will have had food and things prepared. I hope you managed to have a good day.

CherryPavlova · 31/07/2020 22:48

Eid Mubarak.
Shocking decision by government particularly when they were allowing a gathering of 50k for Glorious Goodwood - until local authority intervened.
It would never have happened had it been Advent. Enjoy what you can of your celebrations.

Bravefarts · 31/07/2020 22:48

Celebrating Easter has happened my whole life. And I'm pretty sure my parents and grandparents lacked the imagination to forty years ago decide to be fashion forward and decide to start the trend...

Easter has always been about a family meal of lamb, had egg rolling, hunts, simnel cake, family get together.

Ten to fifteen years, my arse.

cyclingmad · 31/07/2020 22:49

Oh look in the news headline is expect more restrictions in September as schools open and one option being restrictions on households meeting up...THEY ARE TELLING YOU NOW ONE MONTH IN ADVANCE....don't come crying in September if they are imposed YOUVE BEEN WARNED and id you choose to ignore this 4 week warning more fool you!

No wonder some us are refusing to show empathy. Cos they give out the messages 4 weeks in advance and people jusf think it won't happen and when it does cry about it.

Dumb.

puzzledpiece · 31/07/2020 22:49

Would she prefer her grandparents becoming seriously ill and dying because of a mass celebration? Even the Hajj was massively curtailed, no Easter and maybe no Christmas

You need to explain why all this is happening and how we need to act fast and appropriately

Candyfloss99 · 31/07/2020 22:49

It's sad but it's to save lives which I think is a lot more important than a celebration.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/07/2020 22:50

Randomer you are talking shite.

It's not a choice between celebration or grandparent death Angry
Couchbettato · 31/07/2020 22:53

It's pretty shit that the notice was short but it's not fair to assume they wouldn't do the same thing at Christmas.

When was the last time we had a pandemic at Christmas?

BlackeyedSusan · 31/07/2020 22:54

but we knew easter was coming and what the restrictions were likely to be a lot more than three hours before.

So sorry Op. it is really shitty, I hope that your dd will be able to enjoy some of the celebrations and you an pull something out of the mess the government have made of the announcement.

They could have warned you that it might have been a possibility, etc and so you were emotionally ready for it.

PotholeParadise · 31/07/2020 22:54

Some of this is so ridiculous that it is hilarious. If lockdown is required on Christmas day, the government will not have a snowball's chance in hell of public compliance unless they have given at least three days of notice. Perhaps more.

If they tweeted something like this on Christmas eve, half the people who even saw it would just continue with the plans they had already made! By Christmas Eve, extended families would have pooled the money, the people hosting for the year would have the food bought, all the dinner prepared and their guests would have nothing in at their own homes for Christmas dinner themselves. Again, snowball's chance of them sitting quietly at home without Christmas dinner and just skyping the relative whose turn it is this year. They would just go anyway!

cyclingmad · 31/07/2020 22:54

Oh look another article in media saying Swindon , North Yorkshire and other areas close to being lockdown.....bet get people moaning when it happens and lack of notice yet the warning has already been put put there in the media.....

Bollocks. Easter Sunday the day Christ rose from the dead has ALWAYS been a day of celebration for Christians. Please do not denigrate our religious festivals in this way it is plain rude and ignorant. For practicing Christians Easter is the most important date in the calendar and it was very difficult to get our head around celebrating it in a very different way without the sacraments and without places of worship being open. Please do not minimise my and my families experience of a lockdown Easter or tell me it is all hyped up by supermarkets anyway and is not “real”
DarkHelmet · 31/07/2020 22:55

Instead of targeting households they need to start looking at how mobbed our cities are, how packed out our pubs and shopping centres and supermarkets are with zero social distancing and security fighting a losing battle. That's what needs policing better. If that had been handled correctly there would've been no need for these micro lockdowns.

Also I'm lead to believe the R is only just creeping up to 1 in these areas whereas in London it's reportedly already at 1.1 so why hasn't that suffered the same fate?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 31/07/2020 22:57

When was the last time we had a pandemic at Christmas?

I think it's a safe bet that they way our government is mishandling this, we'll get to find out what it's like to have one this Christmas.

Not aimed at you specifically, but I really don't understand the need to compare Eid and argue the toss over which is worse. I don't celebrate Christmas either, and couldn't give a toss about it if we're in strict lockdown come December 25th, but I can still empathise with people who do celebrate it who would feel like they're missing out.

Empathy doesn't get switched off just because you yourself have already gone through a hardship. If anything, I would expect people who missed out on Easter to be even more understanding.

Grumpymum789 · 31/07/2020 22:58

JayAlfredPrufrock

4.5m people in the North West. But last time I checked they weren’t all followers of Islam. hmm

Yeh? I never said we were !?!? But my Greater Manchester town is approx 12% Muslim, so fairly significant in terms of population. Anyway, those of us with some compassion can see it is upsetting and feel sorry for the young girl, OP & family.

SaltyAndFresh · 31/07/2020 22:58

It's been dreadfully done. If people are still allowed to father in pubs and restaurants for the sake of the economy, the restrictions could have waited another day. There is no way that further restrictions would be announced on Christmas Eve or Easter Saturday.

Viviennemary · 31/07/2020 22:58

It is a massive blunder by the government. Really badly handled.
