Teen DD has been looking forward to Eid for weeks. She has desperately been waiting to see the rest of her family and now we've been absolutely screwed over. She cried for most of the morning on and off and I'm just so annoyed that she's entering this state of absolute desolation again because she wasn't given a chance to prepare for Eid not being on. She was okay the last time if not very bored because she knew what was happening but this time she's just absolutely gutted. AIBU to be so angry? I just feel like it's ruined our day and I've wasted a whole load of money that I won't get back on food.

Everyone saying that op is lying about food because there wouldn't be so much has clearly never celebrated Eid. Im not s Muslim and therefore dont celebrate Eid but our lovely neighbours do and I have seen what they cook and they always send us and half the street food over. I think that's pretty typical to be honest.

I was honoured to spend one Eid with some Muslim friends. So much food. I swear I have never eaten so much in my life. It was an amazing celebration with amazing people and I'm so sorry that this has happened to your family and community.

Eid Mubarak

caramelbun · 31/07/2020 22:29

Eid Mubarak OP!
I’m sorry it’s been spoilt. I wish they had told people sooner, I bet they knew they’d probably have to do this.

Katkincake · 31/07/2020 22:29

Eid Mubarak OP, I hope your daughter has had a nice day despite the circumstances. I can hear fireworks going off around me on the outskirts of Bradford so it’s nice to hear people celebrating regardless.

Longwhiskers14 · 31/07/2020 22:30

FilthyforFirth It really is.

MaxNormal · 31/07/2020 22:30

In the grand scheme of things, losing money over a bit of food is nothing. People have lost jobs, lost loved ones and we’ve all had to make sacrifices over the last few months. So no sympathy from me.

Aren't you just a total delight?

MillicentMartha · 31/07/2020 22:30

Eid Mubarak, OP! Flowers

The short notice was crap. I’m sorry some people have been unsympathetic. I hope your DD rallies. Telling her to ‘be less upset’ is heartless in the extreme.

BonfireStarter · 31/07/2020 22:30

I think a lot of people have had a bad time. Blame everyone who hasn't social distanced tbh, that's causing the lockdowns.

Todaythiscouldbe · 31/07/2020 22:31

@randomer

So do tell me about ye anciente Englishe tradition of families getting together over Easter?
We do. It's our one big celebration each year as most of the family work right through Christmas. It's really common for families to have a large gathering over Easter
MaxNormal · 31/07/2020 22:31

And now I've just read the post from really. We're getting quite close to swans being eaten by illegal immigrants now.

Redshoeblueshoe · 31/07/2020 22:31

I agree Filthyforfirth.
Eid Mubarak Flowers

cyclingmad · 31/07/2020 22:32

@myrtleWilson its been weeks of telling people if cases increase localised lockdowns will happen like Leicester....thats more than enough to alert everyone it could happen to your area so stay alert

So they finally announced it for areas last night, at the very least you should know that this could happen and be mentally ready. Like I said there has been talk of cases increasing down south and im fully ready mentally we could have restrictions put back in place at any moment and so could disrupt plans...thats life...thats what has been communicated time and time again. Stop complaining you had one day notice you've had weeks of warning it could happen if cases increase

Allywill · 31/07/2020 22:32

@randomer

As for having " a rubbish Easter" it wasn't even a thing until about 10 years ago, when it was hi jacked by Asda adverts.
Seriously ? You think Easter was invented by Asda? You don’t think this is at all offensive to the millions of Christians worldwide for whom this is a deeply religious festival? My grandma would have been over 100 if she was alive. For her Easter was marked by a period of abstance and fasting (Lent) going to Church twice on Sunday for mass and stations of the cross, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, good Friday and passion Sunday. Asda? Really.? Fuck off.
ChangeOfNameNeeded07 · 31/07/2020 22:34

I haven't seen my family since March, missed Easter celebrations, birthdays and holidays. This is the new 'normal'.
Government announcement's timing is absolutely wrong, but I suspect it was a cock-up as per usual- they did not think beforehand.

DarkHelmet · 31/07/2020 22:35

Easter wasn't a thing until until about 10 years ago?

Seriously??

Now I think I've heard it all.

randomer · 31/07/2020 22:35

I see some parallels between Eid el Fitr and Easter, shared ideas of fasting and contemplation. The " What are you doing for Easter and Did you have a good Easter" has crept up in the last 10 (?) years or so fueled by adverts promoting happy families digging into legs of lamb. The present.
Christmas, I am led to believe is a motley hybrid of Pagan folklore and the belief that Christ was born on the 25th December. Somehow, it has expanded into a hideous spendfest and countless episodes of handwringing and falling out about trifle, cheese and who's got the best
gift.

myrtleWilson · 31/07/2020 22:35

@cyclingmad announcing that late is ridiculous - what on earth makes you think the information came in so late that announcing on twitter at 11.00 was the only reasonable action a govt could take. And I return to my previous point, if the govt wants us to wear masks, it suggests they have public health advice that this is important so wear them - not... we're going to ask you to wear them in two weeks time....

Allywill · 31/07/2020 22:37

And I should probably add it’s not it a lot different for my mum who is still alive and very much involved in her religion and church. She was devastated not being about to go to church on any of those important Easter days. At least mosques are now open.
.

randomer · 31/07/2020 22:37

Of Course, growing up in the Church, I know Easter is an ancient and important time. A time for turning inward, for contemplation.

Leflic · 31/07/2020 22:39

So teen DD was desperately waiting to see the rest of her family and somethings changed?
What was stopping her seeing them before If that desperate?

Why not meet outside?

MaxNormal · 31/07/2020 22:40

Why are some people turning this into a weird competition? OP was upset for her daughter and that an important religious celebration has been cancelled at the last minute, surely if you've missed out on Easter that should enable you to empathise, not turn it into hard-done-to top trumps?

randomer · 31/07/2020 22:40

. Asda? Really.? Fuck off.....how rude.

Of course it is a vital part of Christian faith....

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/07/2020 22:40

I thought this Eid was different to the one after Ramadan?

And also, please don’t belittle someone talking about animals being slaughtered in fields. Happens a lot round my neck of the woods.

Bollss · 31/07/2020 22:40

Whether you like it or not, Christmas is a time when families get together. As is Eid. They are similar. Get over it.
randomer · 31/07/2020 22:42

@Maxnormal, you are quite right.

Bravefarts · 31/07/2020 22:42

Easter didn't exist before 10 years ago, PMSL.
