To be majorly pissed off at new lockdown rules?

Teen DD has been looking forward to Eid for weeks. She has desperately been waiting to see the rest of her family and now we've been absolutely screwed over. She cried for most of the morning on and off and I'm just so annoyed that she's entering this state of absolute desolation again because she wasn't given a chance to prepare for Eid not being on. She was okay the last time if not very bored because she knew what was happening but this time she's just absolutely gutted. AIBU to be so angry? I just feel like it's ruined our day and I've wasted a whole load of money that I won't get back on food.

As for having " a rubbish Easter" it wasn't even a thing until about 10 years ago, when it was hi jacked by Asda adverts.

Bollss · 31/07/2020 22:17

@randomer

How can Eid be like Christmas and/or Easter? How absolutely silly.

Please what are the connections?

For a third time it's a religious celebration where families get together. Tell me how they aren't similar??
PregnantAndTiredMum · 31/07/2020 22:18

Eid Mubarak to you and your family op. It must be very difficult and especially disappointing for your kids.

I don't know why people are comparing it to Easter, there was far more notice for Easter. Yes, I was disappointed we didn't get to celebrate how we usually would but that doesn't mean ops family aren't allowed to especially disappointed just now.

myrtleWilson · 31/07/2020 22:18

Eid Mubarak OP and I hope your DD is comforted by having you and close family around.

Some posters on here are shameful in their apparent desire to put others down, the lack of empathy is quite revealing.

As someone I follow in twitter said in terms of the clarity of govt messaging about local lockdowns - wouldn't be surprised if the next lockdown is announced by Matt H placing 5 gold tickets in chocolate bars of a town and only when all 5 are found will the town know they are in lockdown....

randomer · 31/07/2020 22:19

So do tell me about ye anciente Englishe tradition of families getting together over Easter?

Bollss · 31/07/2020 22:19

I mean our family does? And a lot of people I know do too... It's really not that much of an usual idea. And obviously at Christmas we do....
JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/07/2020 22:20

I cannot begin to understand why it was announced on Twitter.

But I do believe it was done because of Eid.

Giraffey1 · 31/07/2020 22:20

I feel sure they knew they were going to do this much earlier. I don’t understand why they couldn’t have communicated this better. There were so many leaks around the Leicester lockdown that when it actually happened, no one was surprised.

It was all so confusing to with no clarity - again, the government should have been much better prepared with detailed info about what was expected.

Another Boris epic fail.

ButterPie1 · 31/07/2020 22:20

Oh and Eid Mubarak OP, ignore all the misers on here! You both have every right to be frustrated and disappointed xxx

garagesale · 31/07/2020 22:21

He can't win.

If he said "new measures in Manchester etc to start next week" as he has done with other things, there is uproar "if it's that important it should be immediate".

He does it with immediate effect and people complain!

Longwhiskers14 · 31/07/2020 22:22

randomer Why don't you tell the rest of us why they aren't similar then?
katscamel · 31/07/2020 22:22

Eid Mubarak to all of you who do celebrate. Whilst I understand how upsetting it can be for a lot of you who can't hold the normal festivities in the N.African country I'm things are far more restricted and have been since Ramadan. We have an 8pm-5am curfew in place and travelling outside the towns has been limited for a while.
Though the celebrations have been restricted Eid as an occasion hasn't been so though different can still be celebrated.

yelyah22 · 31/07/2020 22:22

Some right miseries on here aren't there!?

Eid Mubarak OP, hope you're managing to have a nice time anyway!

HeIenaDove · 31/07/2020 22:23

"Can you imagine the govt giving 3houes notice that Christmas was cancelled?"

At 9 to 10pm on Christmas Eve AFTER the money has been spent on presents and food. I can certainly see it.

cyclingmad · 31/07/2020 22:23

@myrtleWilson ifs not lack of empathy its just people are so ignorant, burying heads in sand. How did anyone miss what happened in Leicester and all the constant messages thats local lockdowns can take place at short notice. Its been said for weeks! You have to be fucking stupid quite frankly to think itll never happen in your area ever and to not manage your own expectations that with a fairly rapidly changing situation things can change overnight.

Thats not hard to understand is it. The government can't wi if they gave more notice then people will be moaning they didn't do it sooner, if they do it too early same problem.

This is how life is going to be like at least this year its been said time and time again. If you choose to willfully ignore it and not accept it thats on you.

HannahStern · 31/07/2020 22:24

@CraftyGin

Announcing at 10.30 pm on Christmas Eve is not the same thing at all.
What an ignorant comment.
Polkasquare · 31/07/2020 22:24

@randomer

So do tell me about ye anciente Englishe tradition of families getting together over Easter?
People have been celebrating Easter/Passover for several thousand years.

But why make this into a competition about who is worst off? The government should have given more notice, (but the new rules don't just affect people celebrating Eid)

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 31/07/2020 22:24

We're also subject to the new restrictions. I agree that they were taken but the announcement was shambolic. I was in a friend's garden last night past midnight so have technically broken the rules. I have news alerts enabled on my phone but nothing came through til this morning. Of course I wasn't checking Twitter.

To all who celebrate Eid I am so, so sorry. I do agree with the new restrictions but the lack of notice was shocking. With more notice celebrations could have been brought forward or unnecessary expense avoided and whilst it would still be disappointing, there'd be more time to get used to the news. Am almost as shocked by the poster who can't see the parallel with Christmas being cancelled.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 31/07/2020 22:25

It sucks for people who were looking forward to seeing family, but no responsible government can permit religious festivities to over-rule the need for sensible public health measures in the face of a pandemic.

And yes, it's quite clearly been a decision taken with the likely activities associated with Eid in mind. I'd expect them to do exactly the same for Christmas under similar circumstances, but somehow I doubt this lot of self-serving populist idiots would risk the bad PR.

myrtleWilson · 31/07/2020 22:26

@cyclingmad we had two weeks notice to learn how to put on a fucking mask... 90 minutes notice on the eve of a significant celebration deserves some empathy.

FilthyforFirth · 31/07/2020 22:26

The racism on this thread from two posters in particular is very unpleasant.

Sorry OP. It is a really shitty thing. YANBU

Livelovebehappy · 31/07/2020 22:28

longwhiskers14 I can honestly say if it happened on Xmas eve, then yes, I would just get on with it. Obviously not going to be happy about it, but I wouldn’t be making it all about me and the fact I might have family coming over on Xmas day. It would impact on most people, but if it has to be done it has to be done. I’m pretty much sick of it all myself, but it’s not like it was planned for there to be increases in cases. We just have to deal with it.

cdtaylornats · 31/07/2020 22:28

So either they do something too late or too early.

Porcupineinwaiting · 31/07/2020 22:28

with more notice the celebrations could have been brought forward

Which is exactly why there wasnt more notice. Hmm
