To think Boris has got what he always wanted?

Boris has been vocal on his admiration for Churchill, he grew up wanting to be a PM, he wanted to be remembered like Churchill, he wanted to make history. Without doubt he's done it, there has been no one since Churchill who has done as much to fill history books. OK so he wanted to Get Brexit Done rather than a pandemic and I know that's out of his hands but isn't this the biggest lesson in 'be careful what you wish for?'

I'm old enough to have done history at school 40+ years ago. I don't know if it's true but at that time Churchill was portrayed as an alcoholic who had to have an actor deliver his speeches. I've heard alternative views he recorded them again later. Who knows?

PhilCornwall1 · 31/07/2020 23:23

Boris got Brexit done? Hmmmm, we'll see on that one.

LastTrainEast · 31/07/2020 23:24

Those other countries were so lucky to have good leaders. That's why none of them had people dying of the virus and none of their economies will suffer.

We should have had trump. Aside from getting Russia to help him get elected (allegedly), spending his days tweeting fake news and fake virus cures and letting areas of his country become occupied by enemy forces he's done a fantastic job.

He even kept morale up by mocking people's disabilities on TV.

Pepperwort · 31/07/2020 23:24

I hope people are right about how history will view him, the probability of shining reviews - possibly with an official version, alternatives not welcome - has gutted me a few times.

oldbagface · 31/07/2020 23:24

A more spineless bastard we would struggle to find

PerkingFaintly · 31/07/2020 23:30

LucilleBluth, Johnson gave his political advisor the Downing Street garden to stage a press conference about how it was just fine to have driven the length of the country during lockdown, with covid, and tested his eyesight by driving to Barnard Castle.

That may have escaped your attention, but it hasn't escaped the rest of the country's.

LucilleBluth · 31/07/2020 23:41

It hasn’t escaped my attention but I do believe that whoever is in charge right now would fuck up in some way. The man isn’t an island, he has advisors coming out of his arse...what does one do in times like these.

We would be slagging off any leader right now regardless of the love children, racist remarks, and dodgy mates.

We’d be critical if things had been mismanaged for sure. It’s unlikely that we’d have such an embarrassment of riches to criticise.

Pobblebonk · 01/08/2020 00:04

I've always thought that Cameron and May must be thanking God daily that because of Johnson they won't go down in history as the worst PMs ever.

PerkingFaintly · 01/08/2020 00:08

Cameron might. May I think actually cared about the country, even though I profoundly disagree with her on what was good for it. So she may not be thrilled to watch it being trashed.

I'd agree with this. I think she does care.

Johnson only cares for himself and most certainly not about the country or anyone in it, despite what some on MN think.

Once this has calmed down, he will throw at least Hancock and Williamson under a bus.

netflixismysidehustle · 01/08/2020 00:56

@LucilleBluth

How exactly has has he fucked up. Really, now I’m not saying that I agree with everything Conservative but he is obviously following medical experts and trying to save the economy.

What would anyone do in these unprecedented circumstances. I’m no Boris fan but he’s in a no win situation.

This lists his fuck ups until the end of April. They are crowdfunding part 2

.... Yep

Both were flawed, but either of them would probably have done a much better job dealing with the Coronavirus crisis than BJ

Blather and piffle don't work on a virus

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 01/08/2020 01:08

He turns more often than a spinning top & has more faces than a deck of cards. National embarrassment.

DoubleDessertPlease · 01/08/2020 01:46

No one could have predicted how awful Covid would be

The Italians were screaming at us how bad it was long before we eventually went into lockdown, yet BJ ignored the warnings and was still dithering over her immunity or lockdown. We now have the worst excess death rate in Europe.

We only have to look at the track record of leaders in places like Germany and New Zealand with Covid to see how Johnson has fucked up.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/08/2020 02:23

He probably wouldn't admit it if you asked him but I think hes,way way way out of his, depth. I don't think being PM is quite the lark he thought it was going to be.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/08/2020 02:23

Isn't not is.

pregnantprayingmantis · 01/08/2020 02:43

Boris hasn't lead! He's reacted slowly and made poor decisions. He's responsible for many deaths and has blood on his hands. He'll go down in history all right, as a disgrace!

Flowers009 · 01/08/2020 03:27

Him and Khan made history on everyone hating them like Donald trump

Completly agree.

I expect that he just won’t be remembered much. He’s unremarkable and out of his depth in his job. I’m surprised that he is (was) popular with voters just because of his lack of skill, but I think people were dazzled by his celebrity. Corbyn obviously helped him enormously.

Brexit isn’t done. It will rumble on for years and years.

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2020 06:07

@IpanemaSunshine

At least Churchill was his own man, Johnson is controlled by an unelected, dangerous individual who helped him get to where he is by riding on a populist wave of lies and sound bites.
This.

Johnson is too easily swayed by others opinions of him.
I think he's done better at taking control of the situation the local lockdowns and quick decisions. But I still think he's being driven by what he thinks will make his popular with the public.

SarahBellam · 01/08/2020 06:57

He’s a fucking twat faced puppet who is nothing more than a mouthpiece for that haunted spoon, Dominic Cummings. The very fact that Boris didn’t ditch him after the whole COVID dash to Durham shows how dependent he is on him. Boris likes being PM in the same way that a 4 year old likes being a train driver. He likes the fun and saying choo-choo but he has no fucking idea how to get people from A to B safely. He’s held up by that rag bag cabinet, almost completely devoid of talent, who are there purely because they support Brexit. I’ve voted conservative before, but this shower of inept fuckwits are so bad that if I’d had the chance I’d take back that vote I’d do it. Get rid of Boris. Government needs a grown up right now.

Piglet89 · 01/08/2020 07:18

This is an incredibly weak argument - usually trotted out by die-hard tories who remain wilfully blind to the incompetent and corruption the current Tory cabinet display.

Of course nobody would have handled this pandemic absolutely perfectly. I’ve been listening to the Inquiry podcast from R4 and various episodes from March have focussed on different country’s approaches and how none of them is perfect. But - objectively speaking - they’re better than the UK’s approach, for reasons PPs have outlined very eloquently above.

Johnson’s a lazy, incompetent, vain, inarticulate, vacuous fool.
